SUMMER CHAMPIONS CUP INVITATIONAL COMING SUMMER 2018 Novi, MI (January 5, 2018) – We are pleased to announce that multiple soccer clubs in Michigan are coming together to form a partnership to offer players U10-U19 an opportunity to train, play and compete during the summer. The Champions Cup is more like league play, as teams will participate in 68 matches, including finals, over a six-week period starting from mid-June (after tryouts) until the beginning of August. At the time of this press release, member clubs include; Ann Arbor United, Michigan Celtic, Michigan Jaguars, Michigan Thunder, Michigan Tigers, Plymouth Reign, Saline FC, United FC, Waza FC and Wolves/Hawks East. We anticipate this number to grow over the next few weeks.
“The goal of the league is to provide excellent competition against other like-minded in the area, unlike the burden of travel that some other summer leagues offer,” said Andy Pritchard, DOC, Michigan Tigers. “We respect the family wishes to have time off for vacations, but also know many players are looking for opportunities at this time of year, whether it be to prepare for ODP or for their high school squad. This is the perfect balance. By having the flexibility with very little travel, we plan to train twice per week and have one match, all from Tuesday through Thursday as much as possible, allowing families to head back up north for the weekend.” Unlike other tournaments, teams will be able to train between matches and properly prepare for the next one. The league is for U10-U19 and the older high school teams will have the opportunity to exhibit their skills in front of college coaches in late July.
“We are excited to be part of this unique opportunity and I think this is a perfect fit for our players that want to train and play in a team environment during the summer,” said Paul Tinnion, Executive Director, Michigan Jaguars The league is focusing to offer this opportunity to players at bare bottom costs, with the average cost being $400-$500 per player (the cost of one or two summer camps). Division winners will hoist the Champions Cup and receive t-shirts, while the member club that faired best will hold on to the coveted Champions Club Cup for the year.
“I’m thrilled that all of these clubs have come together with a common goal and to fill this void,” said Dan McEvilly, Club Manager for Canton Celtic. Right now options are very limited during this time of year, unless you want to spend your summer break traveling to games instead of vacationing, and typically the competition is all over the board. We’re confident we can offer top-notch competition without all of the baggage.” Each member club will be sending out registration information in the near future. There will be no tryouts and players will be placed on teams based on age, gender and ability. Players from outside member clubs may join too, but we ask them to first get written permission from their current club prior to contacting a member club. More detailed information will be forthcoming via our facebook page at ‘MI Summer Champions Cup’ and from all member clubs.
