PRE-GAME RULES •

Players will receive their shirts prior to their first game. In the event a player has not received a shirt, players should where the same color shirt as their team.

Games have been scheduled 45 minutes to one (1) hour apart and every effort will be made to start games at the time they are scheduled.

Teams/Players should show up at least 15 minutes before their team’s scheduled game time.

Warm up times for games will be limited to 1 to 2 minutes, so players are advised to stretch prior to their schedule game times.

If a team does not have 5 players to start the game, then a team may start the game with 4 players.

If a team does not have 4 or more players at the beginning of the game or the team does not want to start the game, then the game clock will start when the game is scheduled to begin.

GAME RULES Starter, Primary and Intermediate Division - Two 18 Minute Halves (w/ Running Clock) JV and Varsity Division – Two 20-Minute Halves (w/ Running Clock) •

Due to having a running clock, players are expected to hustle at all times during breaks in play, so as to maximize the actual playing time. For example, players will be expected to hustle to the free throw line and to receive the ball out of bounds and out of timeouts.

Clock will stop the last 2 minutes of the game for games with a 10 point or less point difference

Half time will be 2 minutes long

• •

Referees 1 Referee per game for Starter, Primary, Intermediate and JV Divisions 1 to 2 Referees per game for Varsity Division

• • • •

Timeouts 1 timeout per half per team - (45 Seconds)/2 total timeouts per team per game Unused timeouts will not carry over to the next half or overtime If there is an injury and play has to stop due to injury, then the team of the injured player will have to use its timeout Substitutions Substitutions may be made at any point during the game by a coach, team captain or Game Manager. General game substitutions will take place at the 15:00, 12:00, 9:00, 6:00 and 3:00 minute mark of each half in Starter, Primary/Beginner and Middle/Intermediate division games. This should be at the 16:00, 12:00, 8:00 and 4:00 minute mark of each half in JV and Varsity division games. *Please see special rules below for Varsity Division. A good faith effort must be made so as to ensure that all players on a team receive substantially equal playing time, however, equal playing time is not required or guaranteed in the Varsity Division, but all players must play. Fouls and Free Throws Players who are fouled while in the act of shooting will receive only one (1) free throw. A make is worth two (2) points. If a player is fouled on a 3 point attempt, a player will receive two (2) free throws -the 1st free throw is not live, and the 2nd is worth 2 points. On free throws players may play the “release” and do not have to wait for the ball to hit the rim. In games where the clock will stop in the last 2 minutes: o A player who is fouled and not in the act of shooting will shoot 1 and 1 free throws and o A player who is fouled and in the act of shooting will shoot 2 free throws

Overtime If a game is tied at the end of regulation, then there will be a sudden death overtime - first team to score wins (making 1 free throw is a score) and the same free throw rules during the last two (2) minutes of the game apply. No timeouts are permitted during the sudden death overtime Defense Man-to-man defense is required unless coaches mutually agree to playing zone. No “organized” press or traps. However, if traps happen as a result of poor spacing by a team or players on offense, then that is not the fault of the defense, and any such “traps” that happen because of poor spacing will be allowed. Full court man-to-man defense is allowed in all divisions (except in the Starter and Primary Division – see below), unless a team is up by 15 or more points. Full court man-to-man defense is not allowed in the Starter or Primary/Beginner Division, except within the last minute of each half. Varsity division teams can agree to play defenses other than man-to-man, but it is strongly advised and recommended to play man–to-man defense.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION •

Problems/Issues - If you have a problem/issue, please make the League Director, Keenan Holmes, aware of the problem. It should go without saying that if a problem is expressed, it is done in a way that is respectful of everyone, including Keenan, the referees, parents and, most important, the players. You can reach Keenan at [email protected]

Coaching – THIS LEAGUE WAS DESIGNED TO LIMIT COACHING AND TO ALLOW THE PLAYERS TO PLAY. We understand that some teams in the league have coaches, but the majority of teams do not. We encourage parents to volunteer for “game management,” which is essentially to follow the substitution rules below and provide general guidance and to work the game clocks. When 2 teams are playing that do not have coaches, the Program Director/Game Manager/Referees will manage the game for both teams, in terms of substitutions and timeouts (although players may call their own timeouts). If one team is playing another team that has a coach, then the team without a coach will have a coach assigned to them for that game, if needed/wanted, so as to minimize the competitive advantage of having a coach, which is a competitive advantage if you have a good one :)

JV/Varsity Divisions - In the JV and Varsity Divisions, Team Captains/Player-Coaches will be selected and responsible for substitutions and calling timeouts. Middle/Intermediate teams can have the same option (of selecting Team Captains/Player-Coaches), but this must be agreed to by both teams.

GOOD LUCK TO ALL TEAMS AND PLAYERS!!
