Summer Reading List Students Entering Kindergarten Grade K

Reading, like a sport, involves practice and skill. Real skill building occurs when children read for pleasure, when children read “just right” books, that is, books that are not too hard and not too easy, and when children can explore books about topics that interest them. The more they practice with someone’s encouragement, suggestions and praise, the better and more confident readers they will become. Here are some tips to encourage reading at home this summer:  Set aside a regular family reading and/or read aloud time.  Read to your children, even the older ones, for at least 20 minutes each day.  Recognize that your child’s own choice and interests are important ingredients toward reading enjoyment.  Let your child see you reading for pleasure.  Don’t forget to pack a book where ever you go this summer.  Participate in activities at the local library.  Log the minutes you read on the Scholastic website. Please use these book lists to help guide your child in selecting books for summer reading. We suggest reading 2-3 titles per week. Repetition of books is an excellent way to build literacy skills, so encourage your child to reread favorite books. Enjoy the shared reading experience this summer!

The Classics! Students entering Kindergarten are expected to read for 20-30 minutes every day and record completed books in the Scholastic Summer Reading website.
