Dear Parents,
It's that time of year again and summer vacation is on the horizon. At this time of year teachers are asked by parents, "What can I do during the summer to help my child retain the academic skills he/she gained during the school year?" The best answer to that questions is READ! READ! READ! As educators and parents we know the importance of summer reading. Summer reading, not only helps your child maintain many reading skills and vocabulary that have been learned through the school year, but can also enhance their reading skills and help develop the love of books and the enjoyment of reading. Once again we encourage summer reading. The Home and School Association will sponsor the Annual Medford Lakes Summer Reading Program. Students entering grades K - 2 must read (or be read to) at least 10 hours of material, that’s only 10 minutes a day. Students entering grades 3 - 5 must read at least 20 hours of material, that's only 20 minutes a day. Students entering grades 6 - 8 must read at least 30 hours of material, that's only 30 minutes a day. The material can be magazines, newspapers, books or whatever holds your child's attention. There is NO LIMIT to the materials your child can read! Home and School will provide a special reward for the children who participate in the Summer Reading Program. To help your children participate, we have created this packet of information of summer reading programs in the community. We hope that you will take the time to look into these programs and encourage your child to READ. Have your child record the materials read and the time spend reading on the form enclosed with this packet. * PLEASE PUT FIRST AND LAST NAME ON THE LOG. ( May be on any paper so long as information is the same)
*Return it to the NEW classroom teacher by September 18th. Remember, word games such as Scrabble, Boggle and Upwards, as well as brainteasers, trivia games and word puzzle books are great for building reading skills, too. Most of all, be a role model for your child. Bring the wonder of books into your life! Have a great summer vacation filled with many wonderful books!!!
