Visitors to the Glastonbury Abbey last week were treated to a demonstration in the art of medieval stone sculpture. The workshop was led by Shepton Mallet sculptor Jeff Body, who is most famous for creating the Rock Flock, a set of stone sheep sculptures which inhabit a roundabout near Cannards Grave. Dressed in medieval masonry attire, Mr Body showed his audience how to fashion

carvings with traditional methods and tools. He works with Doulting quarry stone, which was used in the construction of both Glastonbury Abbey and Wells Cathedral. Mr Body said: βI love working at the Abbey because it is such a creative place and you can feel yourself become inspired. This demonstration really connects people to the past.β
Children were also encouraged to participate in the event by trying their own hand at sculpture. Owen Thomas, a seven-year-old from Bury, was enthusiastic about the experience. He said: βIt was really good fun. I enjoyed working with the type of stone actually used to build the abbey, but it was hard to keep your fingers out of the way when using the chisel.β
For those who are interested in other craft displays, Glastonbury Abbey is also hosting a medieval pottery demonstration for the whole of this week, followed by a tile-making workshop between August 13 and 15. These events run alongside the Sacred Stitches exhibition, a mixture of medieval church textile work and contemporary embroidery, which continues until the end of September.
