Matt & Kim O’Brien—CRU Boise 20 DAYS SLEEPING IN TENTS . . . REPEATEDLY TEARING DOWN & SETTING UP CAMP . . . HIKING, BACKPACKING & RAFTING. ~ ADVENTURE WAS NOT THE GOAL, IT WAS MERELY THE SETTING FOR EQUIPPING STUDENTS TO FOLLOW JESUS FOR A LIFETIME. We’re back from life of Adventure and have jumped into this school year. But, I do want to offer you a very brief update from our summer. Kim and I want to thank you for your giving which has allowed us to invest in 57 students this summer. We spent 20 days in/ around Grand Teton National Park and Upper Palisades Lake (Idaho). Walking away from our summer, I’m more convinced of the need and privilege of investing in high school and college students. One of the coolest experiences was having students surrender their cell phones for the duration of the event! Nearly all students loved being “unplugged” and dreaded getting their phones back at the end. Over 20 days we invested in 12 college students and 45 high school student (in 2 different nine-day shifts). Students came from Florida, North Carolina, Maryland, Pennsylvania, Connecticut, Maine, Indiana, Michigan, Kansas, California, Utah, Idaho & Oregon. Some had never seen mountains before! Each morning students received training in how to study the Bible. Every afternoon had an adventure and every evening we taught topics like comparative worldview, defending the Christian faith, dealing with doubts, determining God’s will and navigating dating relationships. We stepped in to so many personal lives this summer! Kim and I were grieved and encouraged - by one who had been raised by his grandmother. Jacob’s dad was absent and his mother disappeared when he was 11 years old, only to have her remains found 3 years later. I was blessed to be able to love on him like a dad during our 20 days together. Thank you for your continued faithfulness! Mat and Kim
Kevin & DeAn Pettit—Far East Where to begin. This summer far exceeded my hopes and expectations. The Lord blessed us with a group of students and career singles who were a joy to work with. They loved one another and loved the nationals with whom they worked. Honestly, they really spoiled me! The next time we do this they will have some high standards to meet. Thank you for praying for them/us. In my last letter, I mentioned several students. who were showing interest in the Gospel. After I and 6 of the students returned to the states, I received an update that one student, “Anne”, had trusted Christ, and that “Jill”, and several others were really moving toward Christ, attending Church, and inquiring more. Our teammate, Peter, was really encouraged by our investment there and felt that it really served his efforts there. Praise God with us and please continue to pray that these students find the hope and love of Christ that our students shared with them Continue to pray for others such as “Ben”, my Muslim friend who is fasting this whole month to draw closer to God. Pray that he finds HIM! And “James”, my Tibetan Buddhist friend, that he’ll replace his prayer beads and fetishes for the peace and love that surpasses all comprehension. And “Andy”, likewise a Buddhist, who will continue in class with Peter, my teammate. And the 50+ other students with whom our team interacted.
Our transition back. . . So much has happened this year. We are so grateful for how the Lord has blessed our time with the kids. For fruitful ministry opportunities in our home fellowship. The celebration of MacKenzie and Calvin’s wedding. Helping transition Torrey back east to Lynchburg, VA for his final 2 years of college at Liberty.
MacKenzie and Calvin’s wedding was a wonderful celebration. We are so excited about the family she is marrying into and look forward to drawing closer to them over the years. We were blessed by the church and so many who helped pull this off. The glory of God’s grace and love were present all day long.
(Jordan & Kenzie at the wedding rehearsal) As we head back to the Far East, pray for Drew and Jordan as they get right to business helping with an English camp. And for DeAn and I as we get reconnected with our pastoral friends and their wives. Discernment and wisdom are greatly needed as we will navigate through a change in some issues regarding security with the current gov’t. And we will be investing some initial time once again to try and secure our visas. Jordan will enroll in a university for a semester of language study, and Drew will be attending an int’l school (prayerfully). We are so grateful for you and your persistent prayer and support of us financially and simply through your treasured friendship!
As we left Idaho, and our ministry at ISU, It is our desire to keep in prayer Tom Wyckoff as he shepherds the students to love and cherish Christ in all they do. We’ll miss our times with Tom and the students at ISU studying the Word and worshiping together. It was truly a joy and privilege to grow together. I coached with a friend named Cade and worked out in the gym he manages. God appears to be working there. Please pray for he and his wife, Mel, to know the love of Christ. Even today as I left we spoke for nearly an hour about how knowing Christ restores and renews us from the brokenness of sin inflicted upon us as well as the sin we commit. Pray for Torrey as he looks for work in VA. Jordan and I drove with him to VA over three days and got him settled in before flying back yesterday.
(One last trip to the mountains)
Trusting in His great grace, The Pettits
