OUR KNOWN SICK AND SHUT-IN MEMBERS “I was sick and ye visited me…” Matthew 25:36 (Please notify the Church Office when there is a change in status.)

Beloved, There are nearly 319 million people in the United States, 9 million in NY with nearly 2.5 million in Brooklyn. Over 5.6 million people a week ride the subway, and another 600,000 are commuters. Yet, even in a city this large, sometimes someone can feel as if they are all alone. Try walking down Atlantic or Flatbush Ave at 2:30 in the morning by yourself and you will most assuredly feel alone. Worse try walking into the doctor’s office by yourself when you are having a health concern. In fact, some doctor’s offices won’t give you the results for certain test if you are alone. How scary and alone does it feel when you walk into a courtroom full of people and you are the sole defendant or plaintiff? At these times, most of us wish we had someone that could go with us. Someone to help us face the fear and withstand whatever is about to come our way. The truth is that God has not given us a spirit of fear, but fear frequently tries to set up residency in our minds. It is not an accident that many biblical encounters with the Lord, start out with God telling the encountered, “Fear Not.” We need to be reminded that we should not dwell in fear because God is there with us. The promise from Jesus, that He will never leave us nor forsake us, provides us with comfort and confidence. So regardless of the challenges or afflictions we face; whether we are traveling down a lonely street, standing on a crowded train, sitting in a doctor’s office, or just walking into Bethany and not seeing anyone we can talk with, know that we are not alone. Why? Because God is with us and we are never alone. With a Shepherd’s Love, Pastor Lacey

MORNING SCRIPTURE ~ Matthew 28:16-20 (NIV) 16Then

the eleven disciples went to Galilee, to the mountain where Jesus had told them to go. 17 When they saw him, they worshiped him; but some doubted. 18 Then Jesus came to them and said, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. 19 Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.”

SERMONIC SCRIPTURES ~ ISAIAH 43:1-4 (NIV) 1But

now, this is what the LORD says—he who created you, Jacob, he who formed you, Israel: “Do not fear, for I have redeemed you; I have summoned you by name; you are mine. 2 When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and when you pass Through the rivers, they will not sweep over you. When you walk through the fire, you will not be burned; the flames will not set you ablaze. 3 For I am the LORD your God, the Holy One of Israel, your Savior; I give Egypt for your ransom, Cush and Seba in your stead. 4Since you are precious and honored in my sight, and because I love you, I will give people in exchange for you, nations in exchange for your life.

In the 1830s and early 1840s, African Americans didn't use public transportation. The driver decided whether or not a person could ride, and African Americans weren't welcome. Drivers carried whips and used them to keep African Americans off. With the motto "walk," community leaders suggested using other means. Threats of legal retaliation were laughed at. By the late 1840s, there were special public buses, with large “Colored Persons Allowed” signs on the back or on a side window, African Americans could ride. But these vehicles ran infrequently, irregularly, and often not at all.

But these vehicles ran infrequently, irregularly, and often not at all.

On Sunday, July 16, 1854, Elizabeth Jennings, a 24-year-old schoolteacher, was on her way to the First Colored Congregational Church on Sixth Street and Second Avenue where she was to perform as the organist. Here's how the New York Tribune reported the Jennings incident in a February 1855 article: "She got up on one of the Company's cars last summer, on the Sabbath, to ride to church. The conductor tried to get her off, alleging the car was full. When that was shown to be false, he pretended the other passengers were displeased at her presence. When she insisted on her rights, he took hold of her by force to expel her. She resisted. The conductor got her down on the platform, jammed her bonnet, soiled her dress and injured her person. Quite a crowd gathered, but she effectually resisted. Finally, after the car had gone on further, with the aid of a policeman they succeeded in removing her."

Quite a crowd gathered, but she effectually resisted. Finally, after the car had gone on further, with the aid of a policeman they succeeded in removing her."

The African American community was outraged, and the following day there was a rally at Jennings' church. A letter she had written telling her account of the incident was read aloud: "Sarah E. Adams & myself walked down to the corner of Pearl & Chatham Sts. to take the 3rd Ave cars," she wrote. She described how the conductor and the driver had attacked her. "I told him, I was a respectable person, born and raised in this city, that I did not know where he was from and that he was a good for nothing, impudent fellow for insulting decent persons while on their way to church." "Then," Jennings continued, "the (police) officer without listening to anything I had to say, thrust me out and tauntingly told me to get redress if I could. I would have come up [to the rally] myself but I'm quite sore & stiff from the treatment I received from those monsters." Elizabeth Jennings sued the company, the driver, and the conductor, claiming $500 worth of damage. The majority of the jury wanted to give her the full amount, but, as the Tribune put it, "Some jury members had peculiar notions as to colored people's rights." They eventually agreed to give her $225, and the court added 10 percent plus her expenses. Within a month of the Jennings decision, an African American named Peter Porter was barred from an Eighth Avenue rail car. He too sued and the company settled out of court.
