#DON’TYOUCAREIFWEDROWN?

OUR KNOWN SICK AND SHUT-IN MEMBERS “I was sick and ye visited me…” Matthew 25:36

Beloved, Why would you care about a job you hope you never have a need for? As the old saying goes, “It is better to be safe than to be sorry.” That ideal covers a considerable range of life securing jobs including from Building Security guards to Emergency Medical Technicians (EMT) workers. This holds true for even less frequent, but essential positions, like that of a Lifeguard. They are essential because it is their responsibility is to pay attention to your welfare, especially to care if you are going drown. If someone was in danger of drowning, how would you feel if you found the life guard sleeping? Would it make you furious? Would it cause you alarm? Would it give rise to trust issues? How would you respond? Would you yell at them? What if the life guard was named Jesus? A similar scenario occurs in Mark 4:35-41. When Jesus and the disciples were all in the boat that was being hit by a storm and he was sleeping, they yelled at him, “don’t you care if we drown?” Not surprisingly, if you drown then you die. In this season, you may question if you are drowning by more than just water. Or you may feel like Jesus, asleep on the job. Regardless of which, I assure you that, because Christ cares, we will live and not die. In fact, with Christ we can have life and life more abundantly with all our needs met. So, go ahead and get in the boat with him and us. With a Shepherd’s Love,

Pastor Lacey

MORNING SCRIPTURE Psalm 91:9-16 (NIV) 9 If

you say, “The LORD is my refuge,” and you make the Most High your dwelling, 10 no harm will overtake you, no disaster will come near your tent. 11 For he will command his angels concerning you to guard you in all your ways; 12 they will lift you up in their hands, so that you will not strike your foot against a stone. 13 You will tread on the lion and the cobra; you will trample the great lion and the serpent. 14 “Because he loves me,” says the LORD, “I will rescue him; I will protect him, for he acknowledges my name. 15 He will call on me, and I will answer him; I will be with him in trouble, I will deliver him and honor him. 16 With long life I will satisfy him and show him my salvation.”

SERMONIC SCRIPTURE MARK 4:35-41 (NIV) 35 That

day when evening came, he said to his disciples, “Let us go over to the other side.” 36 Leaving the crowd behind, they took him along, just as he was, in the boat. There were also other boats with him. 37 A furious squall came up, and the waves broke over the boat, so that it was nearly swamped. 38 Jesus was in the stern, sleeping on a cushion. The disciples woke him and said to him, “Teacher, don’t you care if we drown?” 39 He got up, rebuked the wind and said to the waves, “Quiet! Be still!”Then the wind died down and it was completely calm. 40 He said to his disciples, “Why are you so afraid? Do you still have no faith?” 41 They were terrified and asked each other, “Who is this? Even the wind and the waves obey him!”

A “MISSIONARY”

BY

DEFINITION

A person sent to work for the propagation of his/her religious faith in the saving grace and power of Jesus Christ. So, everyone who has heard the Story, and has accepted it as being true, and has been baptized is - by definition - A Missionary. One who takes on a selfimposed duty to help spread the gospel word and through deeds – to help those who are in spiritual or physical need… “Whatever our Hands find to Do…”

Missionary Ministry

The Missionaries, as a group, was established in 1967 by the late Reverend Dr. William Augustus Jones, Jr. who named Deaconess Alberta Scott as its president. Fifty-one years later, The Missionary Ministry has grown from 5-6 members to over fifty dedicated, active and generous men, women, young boys and girls who strive to follow the teachings of Jesus while He was here on earth. In particular, we focus on Matthew 25:40…’ Assuredly, I say to you, inasmuch as you did it to one of the least of these My brethren, you did it to Me.’ The fourth Saturday of each month is set aside for visitations. The needs of those whom we get to see may vary – sometimes all that is needed is a song and a prayer; other times, the need is financial. On many occasions, we’ve assisted in the purchasing of medicine, food and clothing – we’ve even bought a bed, done laundry, cooked and cleaned. Our outreach goes beyond the walls of Bethany and the Borough of Brooklyn. In 1968-1969, we were asked to and did raise $5,000 to assist in the purchasing and building of pews for a church in Nigeria. On two occasions, several members of our group traveled to North Carolina and New Orleans, Louisiana to answer calls for assistance from two of our former members. As a culminating activity, every year on the second Saturday in December, we purchase and distribute one hundred plus fruit baskets to sick and shut-in members of Bethany and beyond. We hold no fundraisers and ask for no assistance from the church. All of our activities are financially supported by the generosity of our members. The accounts of our outreach are stated simply to describe our understanding of what it means to be a Missionary. Knowing that we cannot do everything that needs to be done, does not prevent us from doing what we can do. By the grace of God Almighty, whatsoever we are able to achieve, will be precisely what He has designed for us to achieve.
