TONIGHT’S GAME Suns at Magic

Continued from Page C1

When: 5 p.m.

Lately, the Suns have not even had a chance to lose close games, as they did so often this season. They lost by 27 and 17 points in the past two games with an effort that frustrated Suns coach Jeff Hornacek for how they were “soft” in pursuing balls and “look like a high school team” against physical teams. “You want to just play, go play in a rec league,” Hornacek said after Monday’s loss. His standard for effort and acumen is different than what he sees from his team, but for P.J. Tucker’s endless energy. “We’ve got to understand that through AAU and all of that, they haven’t played the same with understanding that the older guys have,” Hornacek said after a lengthy Tuesday practice. “We see glimpses of it. It’s hard to do sometimes because it’s a long game and you’re gong to have breakdowns. If you have a breakdown because of effort, you’re all right with that. But if it looks like you’re conserving energy and make a mistake, that gets frustrating.“ The coaches had the Suns practice offense without dribbling Tuesday to address how often they dribble late in shot clocks to prompt teammates to stop moving. “We’ve got to keep reiterating the same stuff to them,” Hornacek said. “We can’t assume they are going to remember it every day.” The Suns are not giving up on a playoff chase at 21⁄2 games out with 21 to play but they are at least incorporating more youth. Hornacek used 12 players in Monday’s first 14 minutes. T.J. Warren Rookie played the entire fourth quarter.

Where: Amway Center, Orlando. TV/radio: FSAZ/KMVP-FM (98.7). Magic update: Orlando (19-42) has lost three in a row after it had its first threegame winning streak of the season. Former Suns player Channing Frye is starting and averaging 7.7 points and 4.1 rebounds in 26.9 minutes per game. He is only shooting 39.4 percent from the field but 38.9 percent on 3-pointers. Nikola Vucevic, a 24-yearold center, averages 19.8 points and 11.3 rebounds. Orlando allows 46.5 percent shooting, third highest in the NBA.

“It’s a hard balance,” Hornacek said. “We’re not out of it. You never know what could happen. We’re trying to get them in. Yet you go, ‘The veteran guys are going to give you your best chance.’ It might turn out that those younger guys are the ones who give you the best chance.”

Where’s Granger? It has been almost two weeks since the Suns acquired veteran Danny Granger as part of the Goran Dragic deal, but he has not joined them – yet. Granger might soon be joining the Suns with an eye on next season. He could have joined another team and been eligible for the playoffs if he had been bought out by the Suns and signed elsewhere by Monday. His health history likely kept away contenders’ interest. With a buyout ruled out, the Suns are reaching out to Granger and expect to have him in Phoenix this season with the goal of using acclaimed athletic trainers to improve his health for next season. Granger, 31, has a $2.1 million player option for next season. For this sea-

son, the Suns are hesitant to use Granger when they have three other small forwards – Tucker, Marcus Morris and Warren. Granger played 46 games in the previous two seasons because of a knee injury, and a hamstring issue kept him to 30 Miami appearances this season. In 2011-12, Granger averaged 20.2 points and 5.4 rebounds for Indiana.

NBA fines Len, Markieff Morris The NBA fined Suns center Alex Len $20,000 for “initiating” a Monday altercation with Miami center Hassan Whiteside, and Suns power forward Markieff Morris was fined $15,000 for making contact above the shoulders on a flagrant foul 2 against former teammate Dragic in the same game. Whiteside was also fined $15,000 for escalating the incident with Len, who had shoved Whiteside off his body after a dunk. Whiteside then wrestled Len to the floor. “He came down on me twice,” Len said Tuesday. “The first time, he did it in the first half and I told him to stop doing that. He did it a second time and I just got frustrated so I pushed him a little bit and we got into it. He did it a few times on purpose. I’m not going to take it. He was trying to jump on top of me. “I’m not going to let him just keeping doing this dirty stuff.”

Barron signs 2nd 10-day Center Earl Barron signed a second 10-day contract Tuesday with the Suns after making five appearances on his first 10-day contract, averaging 5.5 minutes. After a second 10-day contract, the Suns must sign Barron for the rest of the season or let him go.
