JOB SUMMARY Under the direction of the City Manager, the DPW Superintendent plans, oversees and directs all aspects of the city’s public works operations including upkeep and maintenance of streets, sanitary sewer and water distribution systems, motor vehicle pool and parks.

RESPONSIBILITIES & DUTIES As a Working Supervisor: •
Plans, organizes and directs all aspects of dayto-day departmental operations including personnel, project management, budgeting, general administration and capital needs assessment.
•
Assists in developing and administering the annual department budget, including the solicitation of bids and oversight of capital projects.
Leadership: Someone who has the ability to effectively manage, direct, train, and motivate a terrific team of knowledgeable and dedicated people, while promoting unity and positive working relationships. Knowledge: Someone who is knowledgeable in various aspects of public utility planning, maintenance, and operations, budgeting and project management, heavy equipment, and safety compliance. Communication: Someone who has the ability to clearly communicate with a wide variety of people and personality types and has the ability to resolve problems under sometimes stressful situations.

Ensures effective and efficient use of budgeted funds, personnel, materials, facilities and time.

Inspects and evaluates city infrastructure and equipment to determine capital improvement needs and makes recommendations accordingly.

Provides accurate and timely information about public works issues and carries out city policies and directives.

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE 1. An Associate’s degree with coursework in civil engineering or a related field, or a proportionate amount of training and experience as determined by the city. 2. Five years’ experience in public works-related activities, including supervisory and administrative responsibilities. 3. The ability to obtain a Commercial Operator’s License and an S-4 Water License from the State of Michigan within 18 months of employment. 4. Flexibility and willingness to be on call and readily available for emergency situations. 5. Excellent leadership, communication and conflict resolution skills. Must be able to communicate in a professional manner in a way that reflects positively on the City of Hudsonville. 6. Skill in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with fellow employees and the general public. 7. Must be detailed oriented and able to multitask. Ability to direct, coordinate and carry out a wide variety of projects and work assignments on time and within budget. 8. Experience with Microsoft Office applications and general knowledge of public works related tools, software and technology. 9. Understanding of water distribution/ sewer collection/ storm water management systems, road maintenance and construction methods, MIOSHA Compliance requirements, soil erosion control requirements, landscape and grounds maintenance best practices. 10. Knowledge of motor pool management and equipment specifications.
