Scene 1

Narrator 1: Claire, Josh, and David are at a local carnival. They spot an arcade room and decide to go inside. Josh: There are so many games. I don’t know which one to play first. David: I’m going to try my luck on the claw machine. Maybe I can win a prize. Claire: No one ever wins anything with those. They’re a waste of money. Josh: That’s not true! It just takes a special talent.

This month, learn about magnetism Narrator 1: The friends walk over to the claw machine. Inside are iron key chains, gold-colored rings, candy bars wrapped in aluminum foil, and coppercolored toy cars. David studies the instructions carefully before putting in his change. Josh: What do you want to win, David? David: See that toy car in the lefthand corner? I think I can get it. Narrator 1: David directs the joystick to position the claw directly over the car. Then, he presses the button to drop the claw toward the prizes. The claw misses the car and returns to its starting position. Claire: See! I told you no one ever wins. Josh: He was close, though. I’m going to try. I’m aiming for the

chocolate bar in the front. Narrator 1: Josh adjusts the joystick and presses the release button. The claw reaches down, misses the candy bar, and grabs a gold ring. Josh: Gotcha! Claire: You won something? Josh: Yeah, but I wanted the candy bar. Narrator 1: Josh gives the ring to Claire, and the group leaves the arcade.

Scene 2

Narrator 2: A few days later, Claire, Josh, and David are eating lunch at school. Josh glances at Claire. Josh: I see you’re wearing the ring from the carnival. Do you still think the claw machine is impossible to win?

Claire: Okay, okay, Josh. You were right. David: No one ever wins the good prizes, though. It’s like the claw is attracted to just the cheap ones. I’m surprised that ring didn’t break yet. Claire: I kind of like it. Narrator 2: Claire removes the ring from her finger to take a closer look. Claire: Oh no! The ring is just painted gold, and the paint is rubbing off. It’s steel underneath. This ring is cheap! Josh: The carnival is still in town for another week. We should go back and ask for a refund. Claire: Let’s go this weekend.

Scene 3

Narrator 3: The friends are back at the carnival’s arcade. David tells Claire and Josh that he is going to look around. Claire and Josh locate a man who runs the arcade. Arcade Operator: How can I help you?

Josh: I won a ring here from the claw machine last weekend. My friend wore it for a few days, and the gold is wearing off. We would like a refund. Arcade Operator: I’m sorry about that. But unfortunately, we don’t give refunds. Narrator 3: Suddenly, David races toward Josh and Claire with something in his hand. David: Josh! Claire! I have something to tell you. I tried the claw machine again, and I won this iron key chain! Josh: That’s great, David, but we’re trying to get our money back. Not spend more! David: I know, but just listen. I was thinking about Claire’s ring and wondering why it would have gold painted over steel. Then I figured it out. Narrator 3: The arcade operator starts to look annoyed and interrupts David. Arcade Operator: Now kids, I’m sorry about your ring, but I don’t have time for this. I need

to get back to work. David: Not so fast. I know that your claw machine is rigged! It uses a magnet to pick out the cheap prizes, and I can prove it. —Natalie Smith
