SUPPLY LIST AND CLASS POLICIES Creative Collage 10am-4pm Leslie McNeil The goal of the collage class is to provide you with a completed collage animal or other subject of your choosing or a heart styled pillow, wall hanging, or table runner. No sewing machine is needed! The more “pieces” you have for your “puzzle”, the more fun it will be. Collage pattern of your choice. Read and follow the specific supply list and directions for the pattern of your choice. Lightweight muslin or voile, if available - see your specific pattern instructions for size. NOTE: Although Laura Heine’s patterns call for “voile” as the fabric the collage pattern is traced upon. a lightweight muslin fabric will suffice. Roxanne’s Glue Baste It ( a better alternative to the fusible 1/4” tape) Thick Black sharpie pen (tracing tips will be addressed at class). 25-30 different floral fabrics or more, in general- utilizing scale, value and color. - Floral designs with a defined shape are best. - Study the pattern and choose fabrics based on that theme, or choose a color theme of your own; usually no more than three colors. Add one or two accent colors, and then look for floral fabrics within that scheme. - Be sure to choose a variety of scale in your color theme; large, medium, small shapes - Fat eighths or scraps for small scale floral prints; about 1 inch to 2 inches in size - Fat quarters (or 1/4 yard) work best for medium (3-5”), to large scale (6” +) - You will need lots of small & medium scale fabrics; but only about 3-5 shapes of large scale - Choose good value and contrast in your fabric selections; Ex.:dark, medium and light. - Tip: Don’t forget to consider white and black prints in your design. - Fabric prints in paisley’s, leaves, butterflies and birds are super fun to use, too! Steam a Seam 2 LITE. (my personal preference) Steam a Seam 2(not Lite) also works well. Follow manufacturer directions to fuse Steam a Seam 2 to fabric. Fabrics may be pre-fused prior to class. Tip: I’ve found it easier overall to fuse the whole piece of fabric, then cut the shape, rather than “fussy cutting” and piecing the fabrics onto the fusible. It is not necessary to pre-wash fabrics. Use an appliqué sheet to protect your iron and ironing board surface. Tip: Pre-fusing takes about 5-8 seconds with a hot iron. Do not use steam at this point! YES, Steam a Seam 2is the very best fusible for this technique! We will spend the first couple hours of class cutting shapes, and discussing tips for cutting the flowers.
TIP: You will appreciate having a medium sized pair of scissors with a serrated edge. (I personally prefer Karen Kay Buckley designed scissors, the medium size, blue handled pair). Serrated scissors give you easier control, and grip the paper backing very well and any scissors with larger finger openings will ease the strain on your hands for cutting!
