Surge Protection

In the United States, there are an estimated 25 million

cloud-to-ground lightning flashes each year. When lightning strikes, it packs a mean punch, especially to the electrical equipment in your home. But it doesn’t take a bolt from the sky to affect your electronics. Sometimes just a little electrical spike can ruin your day. Everyday, destructive electrical surges caused by lightning, industrial or automobile accidents pass into electric, telephone and cable television lines and may enter your home. Even turning on your vacuum cleaner or air conditioner can cause small surges. Once inside, these spikes can be devastating to appliances and sensitive electronics such as entertainment centers, computers, microwave ovens and more.

Can’t I buy a surge protector anywhere? Yes, but will it work effectively? It all depends on what is inside the suppressor. The key to top performance is multiple stages of internal protection that virtually block damaging blips and spikes to your equipment. Basically, surge protection equipment operates like a highspeed switch. When a spike gets on the electric, telephone or cable line, it closes, diverting that high energy to ground, protecting your personal property. Once the spike passes, the switch realizes your power quality is back to normal and opens back up and is ready for another spike, unless it is damaged and locks out, not allowing any power to go to your personal property. In this case, it will need to be replaced. Each surge device has an indicator light letting you know if the arrester is operational. We’ve researched the industry and offer a program that only consists of top-performing products to help protect your appliances and valuable electronics. This high-performance, multi-stage protection responds to even the smallest blip in less that a billionth of a second.

Application of Surge Protection The first line of defense is the meter socket arrestor. This device is installed behind your meter by a line technician and wired into the grounding source. It is responsible for reducing excess power from surges so they won’t harm

common appliance motors found in washers, dryers and refrigerators. Inside your home, a multi-stage plug-in suppressor provides extra protection for entertainment centers, computers and other microprocessordriven equipment. Other suppressors and options are available for other speciality items. Each surge protection device has an indicator light that tells you if the unit is working properly or not.

Does this equipment protect against lightning? It does provide a high measure of protection against indirect lightning strikes. However, direct, and some indirect, lightning strikes are so powerful that there is nothing available on the market today that can provide total protection.

Down-line Warranties This equipment has no down-line warranty. Through experience, we have witnessed manufacturers who offer these warranties as marketing tools to gain a competitive edge. Unfortunately, the promises on packaging and in promotional literature versus actual wording on the warranty document are seldom the same. For down-line warranty claims to qualify for reimbursement, two things must happen. First, your personal property must sustain damage from a covered surge. Second, the surge must have damaged the arrester. When purchasing surge protection with a warranty, the old saying “you must read the fine print” is a key component in choosing the right product. The biggest problem with a down-line warranty is that it lulls the customer into a false sense of security that their protected equipment will never fail. This is the primary reason we have chosen products that are top performers and instruct customers about the differences in surge protection equipment. We want our customers to have equipment that exceeds industry standards versus just good arresters with a warranty that may not pay.
