March 2018 Why do we fundraise?

We believe every child deserves the opportunity to enjoy the game of soccer. To

make this possible, Shenandoah Valley United offers a Financial Aid Scholarship to families with financial restrictions. For the past seasons, between 150 to 175 players participating in Recreation, Center of Excellence, and Competitive programs received the Financial Aid Scholarship. As a nonprofit organization, we rely on fundraisers and donations from the community to support our Financial Aid Scholarship. This year, we have had three fundraisers to support our Scholarship and club operations. Be on the lookout, however, as many more are to come! See page 3 for upcoming Spirit Nights

On March 28th, Ruby’s Arcade celebrated their two-year anniversary by hosting their first ever Strike-a-Thon fundraiser for SVU! Those who came out had the opportunity to play games, bowl strikes, eat pizza, and watch the main event of the night: bowling strikes for money. Participants purchased one $10 ticket for 4 balls to bowl down each lane with hopes of getting strikes. Prizes included pizza vouchers, $75 to SVU, $100 to SVU and $100 to participants, and $250 for SVU and $250 for participants if they bowled 4 strikes during their turn. We had over 40 participants and sold 56 tickets (some participants bowled more than once), which meant 56 Continues next page…

chances to bowl strikes. At the end of the night, only 6 participants were able to bowl one strike and received a free pizza voucher to Ruby’s Arcade. They were Finn Rhodes (U12 Boys - Blue), Kayla Eckard (Recreation Program), Amelia Turner (Recreation Program), Brian Turner (SVU Executive Director), a Ruby’s Guest, and Nathan White (Boys U-15 Premiere Team), Six participants bowled one strike—one not pictured.

We raised over $500 from ticket sales and individual donations. Ruby's Arcade also donated $140 after Chris Howdyshell, Ruby's Arcade Manager, offered to donate $20 for every pin he dropped in one roll. This put us over $700 for the night! All the proceeds will be supporting our Financial Aid Scholarships and club operations.

Guests enjoyed Ruby’s games, which were free for the night.

We would like to give a special thanks to Ruby’s Arcade’s owners and staff for hosting the event, as well as Chris Howdyshell for making the event possible. Most importantly, we would like to thank all the families, coaches, team managers, players, and public for coming out and supporting SVU! Our SVU staff had a great time watching the event unfold, and we hope you had a great time, as well! SVU Soccer: Builds communities, develops leaders, inspires dreams.
