sible using their robot to complete various tasks with ping pong balls. The game consisted of two periods. The first period required preprogrammed instructions and the second period was driver controlled using PS2 controllers. Southwest Middle School is proud of the students’ teamwork in brainstorming, designing, building, and driving the robot. Members displayed adjustment strategies, hard work, focus, and good sportsmanship. SWMS is grateful for all team members and supportive parents.

SHS EAST Program Hosted EAST Night Out On October 18, SHS EAST celebrated National EAST Night Out with 32 other EAST programs around the country. Students presented the projects they are working on this year to about 50 parents and community members. They also demonstrated some of the unique software applications available to EAST programs. This year, EAST invited representatives from all of the non-profit organizations in White County with the goal of developing new relations with community partners. Several organi-

zations attended and the students are working on ideas for how to collaborate with them. The following are a few projects that were featured at the annual EAST Night Out: • SAF at SHS—a possible Student Angler Federation • Unity Through Story-storytelling project to benefit children at Unity Health • Community Connections-an interactive web-based ArcGIS map of local businesses

Students Selected to Deener Student Leadership Team Sidney Deener Elementary School principal Caroline Nail is depending on student leaders to assist her with the planning of building events and suggest ideas for involving parents on a daily basis. Each of these students were selected to represent their school as student advisors. McRae Students Learn Democratic Process on Election Day Third-grade students at McRae Elementary held a parallel election to the nation’s presidential election. Students voted for the president of cookies between two candidates - Oreo and chocolate chip. Votes were tallied for each classroom which represented each state’s votes. Then, votes were compiled into a third-grade pool representing our nation’s votes. Teachers and students discussed that a state may vote one way while the nation may elect a different candidate. Students only had their background knowledge of the cookies, the

packaging, and what advertisements told them about the cookies to go by when they cast their vote. Students only got to taste the winning cookie. McRae’s third-grade President of Cookies is....Chocolate Chip! McRae Elementary School would like to thank parent volunteer Jenn Grady for constructing the student voting booth.
