the believers in Syria, just as Moses stood for Joshua (Ex 17:8-16) and as the church of Antioch stood for Paul (Acts 13:1-3). Opportunities We can interact with Syrians and find open doors in a variety of ways: • Studying Arabic opens many doors and is a great way to reach the heart of Syrians. • Workers with certificates or degrees can use their profession to reach the people. • Businessmen can demonstrate the Kingdom way of doing business. • Teachers of English and other foreign languages can reach the many people who want to learn another language.

WEC International works in over 80 countries around the world, with the goal of evangelising its remaining unevangelised peoples as speedily as possible.

In Matthew 4:24 we read that the news about Jesus spread all over Syria. Some of the oldest churches in Christendom are found in Syria, evidence of the impact that Jesus made in this country. Today, in contrast, few Syrians know Jesus. The vast majority — over 90 per cent — are Muslim. The Syrian television soap Bab el-Hara (Door of the Neighbourhood) is very

popular in the Middle East. It reflects a society in which women gossip and are abused by their husbands, men are aggressive, and parents split their children’s marriages — all with a veneer of being honourable as Muslims. How these people need the gospel! Syrians are very hospitable and respect for guests is one of their highest priorities. This attitude extends to the Syria

Praise God for the few precious believers in Syria! They are mostly from a culturally Christian background and have a passion for Jesus but opportunities for sharing their faith with Muslims are limited. In addition to historical and cultural barriers they face possible imprisonment for proselytising. The few believers who come from a Muslim background are isolated and face persecution both from their own families and from the government.

government which is opening the country up to foreigners, including those from the west. There is little crime and the people proudly say that it is even safe to walk the streets at night.

Background cont.

… the city is full of different people groups with their own distinct characteristics and history … City of Aleppo In 2004 an international movement launched a booklet to promote prayer for Syria. At that time there were no foreign workers among the millions of people in the city of Aleppo. The booklet specifically requested prayer for workers to be sent to the city. In one group, which was praying through the booklet, a man asked God to send a member of the prayer groups to Syria. God answered his prayer and now he himself works in Aleppo! Founded in 5000 BC and lying on the Silk Road between the Mediterranean Sea and China, Aleppo’s boast is that it is the oldest continually inhabited city in the world. Its name is derived from the Arabic word for milk and tradition says that Abraham fed the city with the abundant milk that God caused to flow from his livestock.

Aleppo’s role in a succession of empires is still seen in the importance of its industry and trade, its famous carpets, and in the labyrinth of its ancient covered markets. It is no wonder that it was named Capital of Islamic Culture in 2006 and is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Just as the carpets in the markets are full of different colours, textures, materials and designs (each with its own story) the city is full of different people groups with their own distinct characteristics and history known by God. Put together in this city, they are a unique and beautiful display of our Master’s creativity and a reflection of His glory. Included in the design of Aleppo are threads of Assyrians, Armenians, Chechens, Circassians, Druze, Jews, Kurds, Palestinians, Syrians and Turks..
