Project Narrative What Tableau does. Tableau helps people see and understand their data. Their products are transforming the way people use data to solve problems, making analyzing data fast and easy, beautiful and useful. What Tableau asked us to do. Currently headquartered in Seattle’s Fremont neighborhood, Tableau chose to expand into a new building within walking distance of their current location. Located on the Lake Washington Ship Canal, the building was the former home of a neighborhood gym. Their ask was to transform the gym, that was a beloved piece of the community for 20 years, into a workspace, while respecting its gym heritage. In order to support the program, we added a 8,600 sf mezzanine to the building. What drove the design for Tableau. The design of the space was driven by three main ideas: sound, mixing chamber, and choice. The users of the space are Software Developers, who need a quiet environment in order to work. The architectural zoning of the space creates a graduated acoustical buffer between the more public, loud spaces and the quiet workspace. A large, centrally-located kitchen serves as the mixing chamber. Given the location, users literally have to pass through this area in order to reach other areas of the space, providing serendipitous interaction between different groups from all over the office. This personal interaction helps build relationships, which creates a culture of trust, which in turn leads to innovation. Choice was provided through the inclusion of a variety of spaces that help create a climate in which engaged employees can make meaningful decisions to maximize their individual job performance. Private offices were placed on angles to create pockets of teaming space between and vary views out to the open workspace. To pay homage to this gym, we salvaged and repurposed the original basketball court floor. The repurposed court floor was rotated from a horizontal plane to a vertical plane, using the wood to signal circulation corridors and define teaming areas. The reuse of this material in an unexpected way serves as a nod to the gym legacy and creates a unique sense of culture and brand for this office.

LOUD SPACE

To pay homage to the building’s original use—a gym that was a beloved piece of the community for 20 years—the existing wood basketball court floor was carefully removed, salvaged, and repurposed in the space.

LOUD SPACE | CHOICE 8

The repurposed court floor was rotated from a horizontal plane to a vertical plane. The intention of this move was to have the wood signal circulation corridors and define teaming areas.
