TAR HEEL GOLF NOTES

•CAROLINA IN THE NCAA REGIONALS: This year marks Carolina’s 22nd trip to the NCAA Regionals. Since the regional format was instituted in 1989, Carolina has received a bid to the NCAA Regionals in all but three years (2009, 2011 and 2012). The Tar Heels are one of 81 teams headed to the NCAA Regionals May 16-18. Carolina will be one of 14 teams and five individuals traveling to Tempe, Ariz. for the NCAA Regional that will be played at Arizona State’s Karsten Golf Course. There are six regionals across the country. Three of the regionals have 14 teams and five individuals while the other three regionals will host 13 teams and 10 individuals. The top five teams and top individual (not on those five teams) at each regional will advance on to the NCAA Championships to be played May 28-June 2 at the Capital City Club, Crabapple Course, in Atlanta, Ga. This year’s NCAA Regional sites are the University Club in Baton Rouge, La.; Golden Eagle Country Club in Tallahassee, Fla.; The Scarlet Course in Columbus, Ohio; The Blessings Golf Club in Fayetteville, Ark.; ASU Karsten Golf Course in Tempe, Ariz. and Palouse Ridge Golf Club in Pullman, Wash. The NCAA began the six regional format in 2009. Prior to that, there were three regionals (East, Central, West). Carolina participated in the East Regional 17 times (1989, 1990, 1991, 1992, 1993, 1994, 1995, 1996, 1997, 1998, 1999, 2000, 2002, 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007), the Central Regional twice (2001, 2003) and the West Regional one time (2008). In 2010, Carolina participated in the regional played at the Traditions Club in Bryan, Tex. •CAROLINA IN THE NCAA: This year marks Carolina’s 47th trip to the NCAAs. The Tar Heels have 34 top-20 finishes and 18 top-10 finishes in NCAA competition. Carolina has had 17 players finish in the top-10 of the individual race 18 times and 30 players finish in the top-20 individually 36 times. Prior to this year, the Tar Heels made trips to the NCAAs in 1941, 1947, 1949, 1950, 1951, 1952, 1953, Top NCAA Individuals 1955, 1956, 1957, 1958, 1960, 1962, 1965, 1971, 1977, 1978, 1979, 1981, 1982, 1983, 1st John Inman (1984) 1984, 1985, 1986, 1987, 1989, 1990, 1991, 1992, 1993, 1994, 1995, 1996, 1997, 1998, Harvie Ward (1949) 1999, 2000, 2001, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008 and 2010. The only years 2nd Bill Williamson (1953)* the Tar Heels did not advance out of the regionals were 2001, 2005, 2008 and 2010. 3rd Buck Adams, tie (1957)* •CAROLINA’S TWO CHAMPS: Two Tar Heels, John Inman and Harvie Ward, have won NCAA Individual Championships. On his way to the title in 1949, Ward defeated Oklahoma’s Bo Winninger, LSU’s Gardner Dickinson and Notre Dame’s Tommy Veech before dispatching Texas’ Morris Williams Jr. in the 36-hole final, five and four. Thirty-five years later in 1984, Inman captured the title with a 17-under-par score, breaking Ben Crenshaw’s NCAA record by two strokes. That record, set at Houston’s Bear Creek Golf World, was broken in 2000 by Charles Howell of Oklahoma State who fired a 23-under-par score of 266. •CAROLINA THIS SPRING: The Tar Heels have carded four top-10 finishes so far this spring. Carolina won the Irish Creek Collegiate after carding a 7-overpar 859 total. The Tar Heels’ other top-10 finishes came at the Hootie at Bulls Bay Intercollegiate where they placed sixth and at the ACC Championships and the Seminole Intercollegiate where they finished seventh. In its other events this spring, Carolina finished 11th at the Tiger Invitational and 12th at the Puerto Rico Classic. •CAROLINA IN THE FALL: Last fall, the Tar Heels carded three top-10 finishes. Carolina captured the team championship at the Wolfpack Intercollegiate and was the runner-up at two tournaments – the Tar Heel Intercollegiate and the Rod Myers Invitational. In their other two events, Carolina tied for 11th place at the Carpet Capital Collegiate and finished 12th at the Royal Oaks Intercollegiate. Also, two Tar Heels captured individual championships as sophomore Brandon Dalinka won the Wolfpack Intercollegiate and senior Clark Palmer tied for individual medalist honors at the Rod Myers Invitational.

Michael McGowan ••• Senior

Michael McGowan has played in all 11 of Carolina’s tournaments this year and carded six top-10 and seven top-20 finishes. He finished third at both the Tar Heel Intercollegiate and the Irish Creek Collegiate as he led the Tar Heels to a win at Irish Creek and a runner-up finish at the Tar Heel. McGowan tied for seventh place at the Hootie at Bulls Bay Intercollegiate, tied for eighth at the Carpel Capital Collegiate, finished ninth at the ACC Championships, tied for 10th at the Tiger Invitational and tied for 16th at the Puerto Rico Classic. In addition, he tied for 33rd at the Rod Myers Invitational, tied for 34th at the Seminole Intercollegiate, tied for 42nd at the Wolfpack Intercollegiate and tied for 51st at the Royal Oaks Intercollegiate. McGowan leads the Tar Heels with a 72.42 stroke average. He has scored 11 underpar rounds, six in the 60s, and six even par rounds. His low round of 68 was scored in the second round of the Tar Heel Intercollegiate This marks McGowan’s third appearance in the NCAA Regionals. He tied for 49th place at the 2010 South Central Regional and tied for 24th at the 2011 South CentralColorado Regional where he was an individual participant. Bailey Patrick ••• Sophomore Charlotte, N.C. (Episcopal, Alexandria, Va.) Bailey Patrick has played in 10 of Carolina’s 11 tournaments and has carded three top-10 and five top-25 finishes. His top outing came at the Wolfpack Intercollegiate where he tied for fourth place. He placed ninth at the Rod Myers Invitational, tied for 10th at the Tar Heel Intercollegiate, tied for 17th at the Seminole Intercollegiate and tied for 23rd at the Irish Creek Collegiate. In addition, he tied for 31st at the Puerto Rico Classic, tied for 33rd at the Hootie at Bulls Bay Intercollegiate, tied for 38th at the ACC Championships, tied for 41st at the Tiger Invitational and tied for 56th at the Royal Oaks Intercollegiate. Patrick has a 73.20 scoring average for the year. He fired seven even par rounds and four under-par rounds, all in the 60s. His low round was a 4-under 68 in the first round of the Rod Myers Invitational. This marks Patrick’s first appearance in the NCAA Regionals. Brandon Dalinka ••• Sophomore Newtown, Pa. (Council Rock North) Brandon Dalinka played in all 11 of Carolina’s tournaments this year, capturing one win and carding five top-30 finishes. He won the Wolfpack Intercollegiate last fall. His other top-30 outings are a tie for 12th place at the Tar Heel Intercollegiate, a tie for 17th at the ACC Championships, a tie for 23rd at the Irish Creek Collegiate and a tie for 29th at the Royal Oaks Intercollegiate. He tied for 40th at the Seminole Intercollegiate, tied for 45th at both the Carpet Capital Collegiate and the Rod Myers Invitational, tied for 64th at the Puerto Rico Classic and tied for 66th at the Hootie at Bulls Bay Intercollegiate. He was forced to withdraw from the second round of the Tiger Invitational due to illness, but came back and fired a 1-under-par 71 in the final round, played the same day. Dalinka boasts a 73.78 stroke average. He has scored nine under-par rounds, two in the 60s and three even par rounds. He scored his low round of 6-under 66 in the final round of the Wolfpack Intercollegiate. This will be Dalinka’s first appearance in the NCAA Regionals.

Andy Sajevic ••• Junior

Andy Sajevic, a transfer from UNC Charlotte, has played in nine of Carolina’s tournaments this year, including three in which he competed as an individual. He has carded three top-26 finishes, all occurring this spring. His top performance came at the Irish Creek Collegiate where he tied for fourth place and helped lead Carolina to the team title. He tied for 38th at the Rod Myers Invitational and tied for 40th at the Wolfpack Intercollegiate as he competed as an individual in both. In addition, he tied for 42nd at the ACC Championships, tied for 45th at the Tar Heel Intercollegiate, tied for 59th at the Puerto Rico Classic and tied for 71st at the Tiger Invitational. Sajevic has a scoring average of 74.59. He has scored five even par rounds and four under-par rounds, one in the 60s. His low round of 69 came in the second round of the Seminole Intercollegiate. This is Sajevic’s first appearance in the NCAA Regionals as a Tar Heel. He played in two Regionals while at UNC Charlotte as he tied for 41st at the 2010 NCAA East Regional and tied for 23rd at the 2011 NCAA Cemtral Regional.

Keagan Cummings ••• Freshman

Keagan Cummings has played in eight events this year and has carded three top-30 finishes. He tied for 26th place at the Seminole Intercollegiate and tied for 30th at the Hootie at Bulls Bay Intercollegiate. In addition, he tied for third place at The Heel-Devil Individual Championship. In other events he tied for 44th at the ACC Championships, tied for 47th at the Irish Creek Collegiate and tied for 62nd at the Carpet Capital Collegiate. He tied for 46th at the Wolfpack Intercollegiate and tied for 71st at the Tar Heel Intercollegiate, in which he competed as an individual in both. Cummings has a 75.09 scoring average for the year. He has fired one under-par round. His low round of 1-under 71 came first round the the Seminole Intercollegiate. This marks Cummings’ first appearance in the NCAA Regionals.

Head Coach Andrew Sapp ••• 2nd year

Andrew Sapp is in his second year as the head men’s golf coach at the University of North Carolina. Sapp, the former men’s golf coach at the University of Michigan and a native of Raleigh, N.C., is the eighth head coach in Carolina history. Since coming to Carolina, Sapp has led the Tar Heels to two team titles and two individual championshps, all coming this year. In the last two years, Carolina has had eight top-five finishes and 15 top-10 finishes. One of Sapp’s players has been selected to the All-ACC Academic Men’s Golf Team. While at Michigan, Sapp’s teams won the 2011 NCAA Central-Indiana Regional and tied for 10th place at the NCAA Championships. That marked Michigan’s fourth straight trip to the NCAA Regionals and second trip to the NCAA Championships. They finished third in match play at the 2009 NCAA Championships after placing sixth in stroke play. Sapp led the Wolverines to eight tournament titles and five of his players won eight individual titles. His teams rewrote Michigan’s record book in the process. One of Sapp’s players was selected third-team All-America while two players received PING All-America honorable mention honors. Also, four Wolverines were named to the PING All-Midwest Region Team on five occasions. Three of Sapp’s players were selected to the All-Big Ten Team on four occasions and a Wolverine was chosen Big Ten Freshman of the Year in 2010. Sapp is no stranger to the ACC, however, as he began his coaching career at Carolina as the assistant men’s golf coach to then head coach Devon Brouse for five years from 1993-94 through 1997-98. Sapp helped lead the Tar Heels to 14 team titles and 12 individual medalist honors. He helped carry Carolina to five consecutive NCAA Championship appearances, including four top-20 finishes. With Sapp as an assistant, the Tar Heels captured two ACC Championships (1995, 1996) and were the runners-up twice (1994, 1997). A 1993 graduate of North Carolina, Sapp earned a bachelor’s degree in business administration while playing on the Tar Heel golf team three years, 1991-93. He earned his master’s degree in sports administration in 1996 and conducted his master’s research in the area of academic enhancement for student-athletes

Assistant Coach Andrew DiBitetto ••• 2nd year

Andrew DiBitetto is in his second year as the assistant men’s golf coach at the University of North Carolina. DiBitetto, a native of Rochester, N.Y., played collegiate golf at UNC Charlotte before serving as the 49ers assistant men’s golf coach and then interim head coach. Since coming to Carolina, DiBitetto has helped lead the Tar Heels to two team titles and two individual championshps, all coming this year. In the last two years, Carolina hs had eight top-five finishes and 15 top-10 finishes. DiBitetto, a three-time all-conference golfer for UNC Charlotte, played for the 49ers 2004-05 through 2007-08 seasons. He was named to the 2005 All-Conference USA second team and was selected an All-Atlantic 10 performer in 2006 and 2007. He was selected Atlantic 10 Scholar-Athlete of the Year in 2007, was chosen an All-America Scholar by the Golf Coaches Association of America (GCAA) in 2007 and 2008 and was named to the All-Atlantic 10 Academic Team in 2006 and 2007. After graduating cum laude with a degree in Business Management, DiBitetto played professionally for six months. He returned to Charlotte as the interim assistant coach in the spring of 2009 and was named the assistant coach in the summer of 2009. DiBitetto remained in that position until December 2010 when he was named the interim head coach for the 49ers. As either a player or coach, DiBitetto has been a part of six consecutive Atlantic 10 championships, three as a player and three as a coach. The 49ers knotted NCAA Regional appearances three years (2009-11) with DiBitetto serving as either assistant coach or interim head coach.
