LITTLE INCENTIVE SHOULD be needed for the Javelina football team this week. The Javelinas will be hosting Tarleton State Saturday night in Javelina Stadium and it was a year ago that the Texans pinned one of the biggest defeats ever on the Javelinas. TSU took an 80-14 victory in Stephenville. GOODWELL, OKLA., PROBABLY isn’t a familiar location for most Javelina fans. But it is a site that will become better known in the future as Oklahoma Panhandle State, located in the town, becomes a part of the Lone Star Conference in football beginning in 2016. Actually, the Aggies will take part in the LSC postseason playoffs this fall and will host a first-round game in the lower bracket Nov. 7. The Javelina volleyball team is playing in Goodwell Wednesday night, taking on host OPSU and New Mexico Highlands in the Aggies’ gym. Goodwell is in the Oklahoma panhandle and is 780 miles from Kingsville. The travel time is estimated to be 13.5 hours. It is located a few miles from the Texas border, 30 miles north of Stratford and 111 miles north of Amarillo. Goodwell had a population of 1,293 in the 2010 census. It is located in Texas County. The town got its name when a railroad switch was established there in 1901 and a “good well” was found. It made headlines in 2012 when two Union Pacific trains collided head-on and caught fire a few miles east of the town. Three UP employees were killed. Panhandle State was established in 1909 and has five academic schools: agriculture, business and technology, education, liberal arts and math, science and nursing. It has an enrollment of approximately 1,800. In addition to football, the school has NCAA Division II intercollegiate athletic teams in men’s and women’s basketball, men’s and women’s cross country, baseball, men’s and women’s golf, softball and volleyball. It currently competes in the Heartland Conference in all but football. The football team has been playing as an independent. FORMER JAVELINA ASSISTANT football coach Bradly Chavez was named the interim head football coach at Corpus Christi John Paul II High School last week. Chavez was on the Javelina staff in 2013 and 2014. Prior to TAMUK, he was the defensive coordinator for the Corpus Christi Fury and he played for the Kansas City Command for two seasons. He signed as a free agent with the Cleveland Browns after a collegiate career at Alabama-Birmingham. Chavez received his bachelor’s degree from UAB and a master’s degree from TAMUK. He is a native of Satsuma, Ala. (Continued on Page 3)

THE NCAA DIVISION II football power ratings, compiled by the NCAA, are new this year. They are the same as the NCAA Division II regional rankings that will come out later in the season. But they give you a good idea as to which teams are currently at the top of the postseason playoff picture. The ratings are by schools, not conferences. But a check of the school league affiliations point to the strongest conferences. The Gulf South Conference is the strongest in the poll with four teams in the top nine. West Georgia is No. 2, Delta (Miss.) State No. 4, Valdosta (Ga.) State No. 7 and North Alabama No. 9. The Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference has three teams in the top 15: Ferris (Mich.)( State No. 3, Ashland (Ohio) No. 12 and Michigan Tech No. 15. The Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference has two schools in the top five: Minnesota State No. 1 and Sioux Falls (S.D.) No. 5. The Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference has two: Colorado State-Pueblo No. 10 and Colorado Mines No. 11. The Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletic Association has Northwest Missouri at No. 8 and Pittsburg (Kan.) State at No. 14. The Lone Star Conference would be next in line with Angelo State at No. 6. The Great American Conference has Harding (Ark.) at No. 13. And the Mountain East Conference has Shepherd (W. Va.) in the No. 16 spot. There are 15 NCAA Division II football conferences. THE LONE STAR Conference will take on a different look in all of the sports beginning next year. The 2016-17 sports season will see the addition of TexasPermian Basin and Western New Mexico to the league, and Oklahoma Panhandle State will become an affiliate member of the conference, participating in football only. Football will have 10 schools participating and there are rumors that another school or two could be joining the conference in the near future. It would be nice if enough football programs are in the LSC to bring on divisional play. It would cut down on the travel for most of the schools. Following will be the 2016-17 league members in football: Angelo State Texas-Permian Basin Eastern New Mexico Texas A&M-Commerce Midwestern State Texas A&M-Kingsville Oklahoma Panhandle State West Texas A&M Tarleton State Western New Mexico LONE STAR CONFERENCE notes: …Danielle Anderson was named Lone Star Conference assistant commissioner for compliance and internal operations last week.
