About the Institute Tuesday, July 9–Friday, July 12, 2013 Gaylord Palms Resort & Convention Center, Orlando, FL Join Carnegie Learning colleagues and mathematics educators from across the nation at the Carnegie Learning Common Core Teaching Excellence Institute! The Common Core Teaching Excellence Institute is a four-day professional learning institute designed to provide: • Rigorous professional development designed to deepen teachers’ understanding of mathematics, • Common Core mathematics content knowledge to support student learning, • Expertise in implementing a successful standards-based, student-centered classroom, • Tools to monitor and sustain a successful Carnegie Learning implementation, and • A network of colleagues to share best practices and innovative classroom ideas.

Three Institute Tracks: 1. Common Core Focus: Designed for all teachers and leaders transitioning to and implementing the Common

2. New to Carnegie Learning: Designed for the new Carnegie Learning teacher featuring engaging keynotes and a complete Initial Implementation Training Workshop. Certified Implementation Specialist Workshop: An intensive track to certify building and district leaders in ongoing support of Carnegie Learning curricula featuring a week-long workshop and engaging keynotes. Registration Information Institute Highlights Common Core State Standards (CCSS) aligned workshops that will build capacity and awareness by providing a deeper conceptual understanding of mathematics and best research based teaching practices. These workshops include tasks that reflect the level of rigor that is required by the standards, and the instructional process will push participants to think deeply about the content. After completing mathematical tasks, participants reflect on how the task supports student proficiency in some or all of the practice. Keynote sessions facilitated by education industry leaders who are experts in mathematics teaching and learning. Participants will have the opportunity to learn from and dialogue with leading education innovators who are engaged in the work of successful student achievement. Networking opportunities with colleagues across the nation to share best practices and innovative classroom ideas.

Keynote Speakers JOHN ANTONETTI Co-Founder, Colleagues on Call John Antonetti is former Director of K–12 Curriculum in the Sheridan School District in Arkansas. He served as supervisor of gifted programs in the 18 districts of the Northwest Arkansas Education Service Cooperative and has had the great fortune to teach at all grade levels, kindergarten through high school. Antonetti is author of the book, Writing as a Measure and Model of Thinking and coauthor with Dr. Jim Garver of Focus on Learning: A Process for Personal and Collaborative Reflection.

SANDY BARTLE Senior Academic Officer, Carnegie Learning Sandy Bartle, Senior Academic Officer at Carnegie Learning, ensures that the best of academic research on teaching and learning theory is directly applied to the needs of teachers. Bartle joined Carnegie Learning in August, 2000 after spending 14 years as a high school mathematics teacher, department chair, and coach. Sandy began her career at Carnegie Learning as a Manager of School Partnerships, where she used her background in mathematics education and curriculum to inform and educate teachers on the benefits of using the Carnegie Learning materials in their classroom.

M. RENÉ ISLAS Director, Learning Forward Center for Results M. Rene Islas is the director of the Learning Forward Center for Results, an international professional association. Rene is a recognized expert in education policy, working in the public and privates sectors. His government experience includes service as the Chief of Staff to the Assistant Secretary of Education. He managed the overall operations, policy development, and administration programs within the Office of Elementary and Secondary Education that is responsible for the majority of the programs in the No Child Left Behind (NCLB) Act. Rene played a pivotal role in the creation of the Teacher Incentive Fund and the School Improvement Grant programs that became priorities across the Bush and Obama administrations. He advised and supported the White House Initiative on Educational Excellence for Hispanic Americans.

STEVE LEINWAND Principal Research Analyst, AIR Steve Leinwand is a passionate math educator and leader who has over 30 years of leadership positions in mathematics education. These positions include 22 years as Mathematics Consultant with the Connecticut Department of Education, past president of NCSM, and a member of the NCTM Board of Directors. Leinwand currently serves as mathematics expert on a wide range of AIR projects that evaluate programs, develop assessments and provide technical assistance. In addition, Leinwand has provided school and district-level support and technical assistance for the General Electric Foundation’s Ensuring Futures in Education project and the Microsoft Math Partership Partnership.

Common Core Workshops Common Core Focus Workshops This track is exclusively designed for all middle school and high school mathematics educators implementing the Common Core State Standards and the Standards for Mathematics Practice. Below is a sampling of the workshops that will be available for you to attend at the institute.

Sample Workshops Include: Preparing for the PARCC and Smarter Balanced Assessments Participants will: • Receive an overview of key details of the two national assessment consortia and highlight both the similarities and differences. • Share strategies for supporting school districts transitioning to these assessments in spring 2015. Data-Driven Decision Making: Data Analysis in the Common Core Classroom Participants will: • Increase their effectiveness in learning to interpret and apply student data to the classroom and lab instruction. • Receive strategies for incorporating data into the classroom. Implementing Special Education Strategies: Special Education Populations and the Common Core and Standards for Mathematical Practice Participants will: • Receive strategies for differentiating Common Core lessons in their classroom. • Better understand how to plan and communicate with a co-teacher. Common Core and the Standards for Mathematical Practice: A Deeper Dive into the Mathematics Participants will: • Experience researched-based, Common Core mathematical tasks from a student perspective. • Discuss best practices and instructional strategies to support the transition to the Common Core State Standards. CCSS in a Standards-Based Classroom: Creating a School Environment that Optimizes Common Core Implementation Participants will: • Experience a variety of ways to organize the classroom and various tools and materials to support learning. • Foster new instructional strategies that promote thinking, reasoning, and sense making.

Agendas Certified Implementation Specialist Workshop Agenda Learning Objectives:
