BBYa The Pursuit of Excellence TEAM HANDBOOK Welcome to the BBYA The greatest service that any athletic program can do for its student-athletes is to give them an experience that helps to shape attitudes, values, and a code of conduct. This, in turn, gives purpose and meaning to one’s actions and character. Qualities such as honesty, loyalty, commitment, and a sense of fair play, lead to success both in competition and throughout life. It is especially important that you take these ideas seriously because you are the ones that will continue to uphold the high standards of the BBYA for both yourselves and future student-athletes. This includes the customs and traditions that make youth sports such a special time. It is an exciting time in your life, and being part our program is going to be a valued experience. Treasure this time as you “pursue excellence” as part of our team. Together, we will continue to make the BBYA the best educational and athletic experience any student could have.

MISSION STATEMENT The mission of the BBYA is to contribute beyond the classroom to the educational experience of student-athletes. The BBYA members will work hard to establish and maintain excellence for our program, and also for themselves. The factors that contribute to excellence --- mental and physical discipline, a strong work ethic, and commitment to see tasks to their conclusion -- all reinforce the qualities that teachers want to develop in the classroom. The BBYA shall remain vigilant in its pursuit of excellence. Our goal is to maximize the opportunities for student-athlete success. This, in return, will provide positive experiences for the individual, the schools, and the community. ACADEMICS Our members are student’s first, athletes second. Our team goals will make graduation a priority, and will strongly encourage working toward a 3.0 or better average for each athlete. Because football demands so much time and students may fall behind, a policy of regular grade checks will be used in order to monitor and support progress in the classroom. Problems will be addressed in a timely manner, with communication between the coaching staff, teacher, student, and parent being a critical element to any plan for improvement. Students may be directed to miss practice or a game by the coaching staff in order to assist them in meeting the requirements. ATTENDANCE There is no better way to improve your skills than to spend more time on the field. Also, you are part of the team and your teammates count on you. This policy is very simple: You are required to be at practice on time every day.  Excused absences require a note from a parent or doctor.  Unexcused absences will follow the following consequences: - Loss of position on the depth chart; - Loss of game time. - Repeated unexcused absences will result in removal from the team pending a conference. CITIZENSHIP Before, during, and after school, as well as before, during, and after football season, you are expected to DO WHAT IS RIGHT. Your inappropriate behaviors not only reflect on you, but on all of us. Likewise, your positive leadership and conduct within school and the community can bring credit to you and our program. Make wise choices in your behaviors and in your friends. If they care about you, they will understand. If they try to pull you into bad decisions, maybe they are not really your “friend.” Inappropriate behaviors and infractions of school and or athletic codes will be handled by the Executive Board. Infractions of team rules will be handled on a case by case basis. Consequences may include a progression of discipline ranging from extra physical training, to being sent home from practice, to being withheld from competition, to dismissal from the team. DRESS CODE As with behavior, inappropriate dress and appearance that detracts for the team will not be tolerated. Being part of BBYA Football means living by standards that will unify our team.  No jewelry of any type is to be worn on the field. This includes all necklaces, bracelets/wristbands, earrings or other piercings, and watches.  No bandanas of any style or color.  No towels and/or streamers, other than those provided to position players.  No messages, initials, or markings on tape allowed.  No arm bands, leg bands, or any other type of forearm / bicep bands are allowed by rule.  The team uniform shall be worn as directed; jersey unaltered, jersey tucked in, required team game socks.  Practice jerseys will be worn at practice.  Players will be required to have cleats built for grass and field turf.

PLAYERS ON THE SIDELINE Players who have not met academic requirements will not be allowed on the sideline. Players who have not been at practice according to team policy that week will not be allowed on the sideline. Players on the sideline will be in their game jersey and/or team sweatshirt. Only team hats will be allowed. Players on the sideline will follow the same dress code as players in the game --- no jewelry, no earrings, no bandanas Players on the sideline are there to assist with pre-game, or during the game… not to play catch and “hang out.”

ELECTRONICS (cell phones, Facebook, tweets, and chat rooms) We live in a world where information travels faster than ever. You must understand that everything that you text message on your phone or that you post on your Facebook page can be accessed and forwarded to anyone. It is critical that you take care of yourself and your teammates and be careful with what you put out there for all to see. You must assume that whatever you say will be read by everyone. Our policy will be to only post those messages that speak positively about our players and program. “Trash talk” about teammates or our opponents may seem to be “all in fun,” but it can divide and destroy our TEAM quickly, and it can also provide motivation to our opponents. BBYA members will not engage in electronic battles… we will do it on the field. EMERGENCY PROCEDURES Our primary duty as a coaching staff is to provide a safe environment, teach safe techniques, and provide supervision of drills and scrimmages to insure that practices and games are not putting players at risk unnecessarily. Despite these efforts, injuries can and do occur. Our staff will have cell phones on the practice field to call for assistance in the case of serious injury. GRADE CHECKS Initial academic eligibility for the fall sports season is based on grades for an athlete’s previous spring semester. Grade checks will also take place during the season in order to encourage diligence during the season. Students not at standard may be excused from practice/games until grades are brought up. This is not punishment, but rather an opportunity to have time specifically focused on academics during the season. HAZING Hazing, harassment, intimidation, and bullying are all prohibited. Specific to the BBYA there is absolutely no place for any of these activities in our program. Each and every aspect of hazing, harassment, intimidation and bullying is diametrically opposed to “Ram Pride,” and everything that this program stands for. There is no initiation, nor is there any way to “earn” your right to belong to our team beyond your effort, your ability, and your choice to do the work that is required to play the game of football. Our team will gain strength and unity through the shared experience of hard work, competition, and the common goal of becoming the best team we are capable of becoming. Hazing activities actually work to the detriment of building a team because hazing often involves humiliating and embarrassing an individual rather than building up their confidence and belief in their teammates. MIND SET OF THE WEEK Our program will be about teaching more than football, and our “Mind Set of the Week” is designed to do just this. Each week of our season will have an emphasis that enhances our preparation for playing football games, but also contains elements that will encourage growth in young men who will be expected to go out and contribute to our community in the future. Our mind set will be our true strength, and will help us keep both victory and defeat in proper perspective. It is no accident that some of the most successful programs on the field have also done an exceptional job of building their players’ character. Coaches like John Wooden, Tom Osborne, Lou Holtz, and Frosty Westering, value the people that their players will become. As a result, they end up with players who appreciate the value of preparation, believe in themselves and their teammates, and persevere in the face of adversity. I want these players on our team, and I want these men of integrity as neighbors in the future.

PARENTAL GUIDELINES The communication and cooperation within the player/coach/parent athletic triangle is critical to the successful pursuit of individual and team goals. In order to keep communication open and misunderstandings to a minimum, the following are some suggestions for making the BBYA a great experience for you and your athlete. Please refer to “The Ten Commandments for Football Parents” for more on this topic. Player-Coach Relationship:  This is the most important relationship in building a program.  Parents can affect this relationship by criticizing the coach to their son.  Parents should always remember that their son has to return to practice the next day.  Parental coaching at home may confuse and impede the athlete’s progress. Your son needs to talk to his coaches About differences in style or technique so that coaches can help your son understands our concepts and systems.  

Parent-Coach Relationship: Allow the coach to guide and instruct the team. Do not question or confront the coach immediately following a game.

BBYa The Pursuit of Excellence 

If you want to discuss a problem with the coach, submit your concerns in writing via email to the Athletic Director so that your concern can be handled in a calm, courteous, and logical manner.

Parent-Player Relationship:  Do not try to live through your son.  Be positive and supportive without adding undue pressure and unrealistic expectations. (Based on the article “Handbook for Parents,” Dr. David Hoch, A.D. Eastern Tech HS as found in Coach and Athletic Director.) PLAYER CONDUCT Rules serve to protect student-athletes, and should be viewed as tools to promote sportsmanship rather than restrict what one can do. As a BBYA player you represent more than just yourself, you represent your teammates, your coaches, and your community. What you choose to do will reflect on all of us. It is the responsibility of the coaching staff to help you make wise choices. It is your responsibility to do the right thing. You are required to sign the athletic code... you are also expected to live up to its standards. You have also chosen to be a part of this program... you are expected to live up to our standards. Team rules are designed to unify the group and to provide structure. This is important in order to establish the strong sense of “team” which is essential to the success of any football program. Infractions will be handled on a case by case basis by the coaching staff, and consequences may include anything from extra work at practice, to being withheld from competition, to being sent home pending a conference with parents, to removal from the team. PLAYING TIME All players will be given the opportunity to compete for placement on the offensive and defensive depth chart. This competition takes place by your attitude, the effort put forth during daily drills, and the performance during practice / scrimmage (whether part of the working team or the scout team). SPORTSMANSHIP BBYA members will conduct themselves in the following manner:  We will ALWAYS shake the hand of our opponent and his coaching staff to congratulate them on their efforts whether we have won or lost.  We will win with humility, we will lose with class. Celebrating your victory should not humiliate your opponent. Throwing a tantrum in defeat demonstrates immaturity and a lack of respect for your opponent’s efforts. Be a good sport. WARNING (The following warning sticker is placed on every helmet and will be reviewed with every player) Keep your head up. Do not butt, ram, spear, or strike an opponent with any part of this helmet or faceguard. This is a violation of football rules and may cause you to suffer severe brain or neck injury, including paralysis or death and possible injury to your opponent. Contact in football may result in Concussion/Brain Injury which no helmet can prevent. Symptoms include: loss of consciousness or memory, dizziness, headache, nausea or confusion. If you have symptoms, immediately stop and report them to your coach, trainer, and parents. Do not return to a game or contact until all symptoms are gone and you receive medical clearance. Ignoring this warning may lead to another and more serious or fatal brain injury. NO HELMET SYSTEM CAN PROTECT YOU FROM SERIOUS BRAIN AND/OR NECK INJURIES INCLUDING PARALYSIS OR DEATH. TO AVOID THESE RISKS, DO NOT ENGAGE IN THE SPORT OF FOOTBALL.
