Letter to all Parents of students at Duffryn High School Dear Parent/Guardian Another school year comes to an end at Duffryn High School and after a busy summer term. A special welcome to the Year 7 students who will join us in September. I am pleased to enclose a copy of our latest school newsletter packed with information and a celebration of the events of this year. Important information you will need for September: Tuesday 1 September Wednesday 2 September

Thursday 3 September

Staff only in school for INSET day Is the first day of school but only Y7 and Y12/13 should attend on this day. All students from these year groups MUST be present. All year groups back to school.

1. Holidays in Term Time Please do not book a holiday in term-time. Along with all other secondary schools in Newport, we will not be authorising holidays in term-time. It has been proven that this type of absence seriously damages a student’s education. Both the Welsh Government and Newport City Council support this stance. Any absence related to holidays in term time will be marked unauthorised and treated as truancy. From this year £120 fines will be levied on parents who ignore this. 2. School Uniform We are very proud of our reputation for excellent uniform and all students should be wearing full uniform when they return in September. I would ask you to note the following information: We have had a problem with school trousers again this year. NO TIGHT OR DRAINPIPE TROUSERS ARE PERMITTED – EVEN IF THESE ARE BEING SOLD AS SCHOOL UNIFORM. Only plain, smart black trousers (not skinny fit, jean-style, black cotton drill or denim material). There have also been issues with girls’ skirts. These should be on the knee and not excessively fitted. Please see the enclosed sheet indicating acceptable/not acceptable pictures of these items. Only black lace-up shoes are acceptable in Duffryn High School. No kind of training shoe or shoes with Velcro straps that look like training shoes are acceptable. Please check with us if you are unsure. All uniform information will be on the website by Friday 17 July. Year 7 – 11 students MUST have a school coat and wear it at all times. Uniform for Years 7 – 11: black shoes (no trainers), black trousers/skirt, white shirt, tie, grey school jumper and school coat. Other items such as socks/belts should be plain black. Jewellery (other than studs in the ear) is not allowed for health and safety reasons. If your child has an extreme haircut please ensure that this grows out before September. The same applies to brightly dyed hair. The Headteacher has the final say on this matter. Uniform for Years 12 – 13: sixth form tie, black trousers/skirt, white shirt. Black shoes (no trainers). You will find enclosed with this letter a list of uniform items which can be purchased in school. The school uniform shop will be open during the following times: MONDAY 20 JULY – FRIDAY 24 JULY

9.00am - 1.30pm

MONDAY 24 AUGUST – FRIDAY 28 AUGUST

9.00am - 1.30pm
