Abstract This poster reports on the perceived effectiveness of a program to increase the awareness of health risks of obesity in African-American nursing students. Thirty (n=30) senior level Bachelor of Science in Nursing students attending an HBCU took a knowledge test, then participated in an hour-long educational session and completed a 10-item post-test to evaluate the effectiveness of the program in the increasing awareness of obesity as a risk for heart disease and diabetes. The findings suggesting a need to further educate African American students on the consequences of obesity.

Educational Interventions

The students attended a one-hour educational session about the consequences of unhealthy food and lack of exercise, and the health risks of obesity, based on guidelines from the American Heart and Diabetes Associations. The material included the etiology of childhood obesity and the relationship of obesity to chronic diseases such as diabetes and heart disease. The presentation also showed how obesity disproportionately affects African Americans. Information was given on the benefits of making health food choices and the US government food pyramid.

Results Twenty-two (22) of the respondents did not respond to personal health history questions, and 8 did not report data about family member’s health. Participants’ mean score on the knowledge assessment tool was 60%, indicating a moderate level of knowledge of strategies to prevent obesity. After receiving the educational intervention, participants’ reported awareness of the health risks of obesity increased, indicated by a mean score of 4.06 on the 5-point Likert scale.

Conclusion

The educational intervention may have been effective in increasing participants’ awareness of the health risks of obesity. However, participants’ knowledge of their own and their family members’ health may be lacking. Increasing awareness of the health risks of obesity is an important initial step in promoting healthy lifestyles and decreasing obesity in African Americans.
