» Temple field hockey celebrates the grand opening of Howarth Field on Friday when the Owls host No. 18 Penn State. The field is named in recognition of a $500,000 gift from field hockey alum Cherifa (Nouri) Howarth and her husband, Greg. » Friday’s game is the first in a six-game homestand for Temple, and the Owls play 11 of 18 regular-season games at home. » Temple is coming off an 0-2 weekend to start the season, falling 8-0 to No. 2 and defending national champion Syracuse, and losing by a narrow score of 2-1 to city rival Saint Joseph’s. » Redshirt sophomore Maris Stern scored midway through the second half to tie the game at Saint Joseph’s, but the Hawks made it 2-1 before halftime. Despite 10 second-half penalty corners and out-shooting SJU 11-5 in the latter period, the Owls were unable to come up with the equalizer. » Freshman Maddie Lilliock has started both games in goal so far for the Owls, playing over 60 minutes in each contest. Lilliock made nine saves against Syracuse, and six against Saint Joseph’s. » Coming off an 8-13 season and a second-straight appearance in the BIG EAST Championship game, Temple has a new look in 2016 after the loss of 10 seniors to graduation. » The Owls, who received six votes in the NFHCA Preseason Top 20 Poll, are led by four seniors in Katie Foran, Paige Gross, Ali Meszaros and Michelle Walsh. » Five of the Owls’ 13 returning players started in at least half of the team’s games last season. » Sarah Keer, returning for her fourth season as a redshirt junior, and junior Rachael Mueller, scored four goals apiece to tie for fourth on the team in 2015. » Gross, juniors Maiyah Brown and Hattie Kuhns and redshirt sophomore Maris Stern all notched two goals apiece last year. » Many freshmen will be counted on to make an immediate impact, and the talent level is deep among the eight-member rookie class. Freshmen Maddie Merton and Maddie Lilliock have started in both games for Temple. » This year marks the third in a row in which Temple faced the defending national champion. The Owls play UConn as part of their BIG EAST Conference schedule, and the Huskies were national champs in both 2013 and 2014. » Penn State leads the all-time series 33-7-2 against the Owls. The Nittany Lions have taken the last two meetings including a 2-0 decision a year ago. In 2013, the Owls upset the Lions 3-0 in State College. » Temple leads La Salle 31-4-1 in the all-time series, and has won three straight. The last time the teams met was in 2014, with the Owls winning 5-1.

GRAND OPENING OF HOWARTH FIELD SET FOR SEPT. 2 The 2016 season will serve as the inaugural year for Temple field hockey’s new stadium. The Owls will play for the first time on Howarth Field at the brand new Temple Sports Complex when they take on #18 Penn State at 6 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 2. The new complex just south of Temple’s Main Campus was completed in August, and will also serve as the home for lacrosse, men’s and women’s soccer, and women’s track & field. The $22 million project, started in September 2015, features two playing fields. The space for field hockey and lacrosse, at the southern end of the property by 13th Street and Girard Avenue, is named Howarth Field in recognition of a $500,000 gift from former field hockey student-athlete Cherifa Howarth, ‘98, and her husband, Greg. SCOUTING PENN STATE Penn State, ranked 18th in the NFHCA Preseason Coaches Poll, is sure to move up in the rankings after a strong opening week. The Nittany Lions took down No. 20 Old Dominion 6-2 before going on to shut out No. 5 Virginia, 3-0. PSU is coming off a 9-10 season in 2015, falling to Michigan in the semifinals of the Big Ten Tournament. Junior Moira Putsch leads the Lions with two goals and three assists so far this season. Putsch is active for her first season with PSU after transferring from Maryland in 2015 and sitting out last season due to injury. The Lions also returned 10 starters from a year ago including leading scorer and senior Brooke Birosik (11 goals, 3 assists in 2015). Penn State leads Temple 33-7-2 in the all-
time series and has taken the last two meetings including a 2-0 decision a year ago. In 2013, the Owls upset the Lions 3-0 in State College. SCOUTING LA SALLE La Salle comes into the weekend at 1-1 overall with a 2-0 win vs. Central Michigan and a 3-2 overtime loss at Vermont. The Explorers, who went 9-9 in 2015, have returned seven starters this season including All-Atlantic 10 Second Team selection Kendall Kreider. Kreider, a junior, leads La Salle so far this year with two goals. Temple leads La Salle 31-4-1 in the all-time series, and has won three straight. The last time the teams met was in 2014, with the Owls winning 5-1. SIX RANKED TEAMS AWAIT TEMPLE IN 2016 The NFHCA Preseason Top 20 Coaches Poll was released on Aug. 23 and had six of Temple’s opponents in the rankings. The Owls have already faced No. 2 Syracuse, and will play No. 18 Penn State on Friday. Still upcoming on the schedule is No. 14 Delaware (Sept. 9), No. 3 UConn (Sept. 23), No. 20 ODU (Oct. 7) and No. 13 Liberty (Oct. 28).
TEMPLE UNIVERSITY FIELD HOCKEY OWLS DROP TWO IN OPENING WEEKEND TOURNAMENT The first weekend of the season saw Temple pick up a pair of losses at the Conference Cup Tournament hosted by Saint Joseph’s University. The Owls opened against No. 2 Syracuse, keeping the game scoreless early on but eventually falling 8-0 to the defending national champs. Temple lost 2-1 to city rival Saint Joseph’s two days later, despite dominating offensively in the second half. After the Owls tied the game 1-1 in the first half, the Hawks picked up a second goal four minutes before halftime, and the score stuck through to the end of the game. Temple had 10 second-half penalty corners and out-shot SJU 11-5 in the half, but could not get one past the Hawks’ goalkeeper.
NEW FACILITY AND NEW OPPORTUNITIES AWAIT TEMPLE FIELD HOCKEY IN 2016 When a team loses a large senior class and has an influx of newcomers, many refer to the following season as a “rebuilding year.” Second-year Temple field hockey head coach Marybeth Freeman sees the situation differently, and hopes her squad sees only the opportunities in front of them. “Now, more than ever, especially with the departure of 10 seniors, it is imperative that our team knows that everything right now is up for grabs,” said Freeman. “From the goalkeeping to the forward line, we need to work collaboratively as a team and understand that we are always going to put our best foot forward on the field.” Feeling empowered is the name of the game for Freeman and her staff as far as what they look to instill in their student-athletes. “Last year, there were spots that were a bit more concrete and filled readily,” noted Freeman. “Now there are vacated positions and it’s really a blank canvas. Those spots are up for anyone’s taking. I think that really empowers and inspires a lot of people on this team, and I think it’s going to make us even more competitive.” The 2016 Owls will also get inspiration from being the inaugural team to play on Howarth Field at the brand-new Temple Sports Complex. The $22 million project has been completed just in time for the fall, with the complex serving as the home of Temple’s field hockey, lacrosse, men’s soccer, women’s soccer and women’s track & field teams.
TEMPLE PICKED FOURTH IN THE BIG EAST Temple field hockey has been picked to finish fourth of eight teams in the 2016 BIG EAST Conference Preseason Coaches’ The space for field hockey and lacrosse, at the southern end of the property by 13th Street and Girard Avenue, is named Howarth Poll. Three-time defending conference champion UConn has Field in recognition of a $500,000 gift from former field hockey student-athlete Cherifa (Nouri) Howarth, ‘98, and her husband, been unanimously selected to defend its title. Greg. The Huskies also garnered the BIG EAST Preseason Offensive Player of the Year honor in forward Charlotte Veitner, while UConn midfielder Anna Middendorf and Liberty back Serena Barr were selected as Preseason Co-Defensive Players of the Year. The Huskies collected all seven eligible first-place votes for a total of 49 points from the leagues’ head coaches, who were not allowed to vote for their own players or teams. Conference newcomer Liberty collected 40 points to claim second place in the coaches’ poll, earning the remaining firstplace vote. Old Dominion followed in third with 39 points while Temple rounded out the top four with 30 points. They were followed by Providence with 25, Villanova with 19, Quinnipiac with 13 and Georgetown with nine.
“We’re so fortunate to have Howarth Field,” said Freeman. “We’re extremely grateful to the Howarths and to all the alumni and parents that have made so many contributions, and to the administration that have supported us from the get-go on this whole project. For us to come out here and see this brand new Astroturf 12 and this whole new facility, and the locker room, it’s really special. It definitely empowers the women on the team, and hopefully also those that aspire to be on the team and those that played before us. We’re just so thankful for it.” Temple is led by four seniors this season in Katie Foran, Paige Gross, Ali Meszaros and Michelle Walsh. Foran, Gross and Meszaros have been named the 2016 team co-captains. While no current team members are decorated as far as conference honors and awards from past seasons, the senior group and other veterans have played integral roles in the successes of the last few years. Five of the Owls’ 13 returning players started in at least half of the team’s games last season. Sarah Keer, returning for her fourth season as a redshirt junior, and junior Rachael Mueller, scored four goals apiece to tie for fourth on the team in 2015. Gross, juniors Maiyah Brown and Hattie Kuhns and redshirt sophomore Maris Stern all notched two goals apiece last year.
Redshirt sophomore Ashley Kucera returns in the midfield after making 11 starts in her first active season with the Owls. Meszaros, who started in 18 of 21 games and notched an assist, returns to help anchor the backfield. The goalkeeping position will see sophomore Chloe Johnson and freshman Maddie Lilliock vying for the spot, with both being relative newcomers as Johnson played BIG EAST DIGITAL NETWORK COMING TO HOWARTH FIELD just 13 minutes in the cage last year. Temple field hockey’s conference opener against Providence on Friday, Sept. 16 is part of that lineup, as is the BIG EAST Field Hockey Championships hosted by Temple on Nov. 4 and 6. The Owls will host a conference tournament for the first time in six years, as Temple hosted the Atlantic 10 Tournament back in 2010.
“It’s ok if you start and it’s ok if you don’t,” she says. “Everyone on this team has a role and everyone needs to be empowered by that philosophy. From where we finished in the spring to where we are now, implementing that, they’re totally on board with it. When you have a team that has wrapped their heads around that philosophy, it makes our job as a staff significantly easier and more fun.” Freeman is impressed so far with the leadership and enthusiasm displayed by her entire squad. “Our returning group is doing a great job of leading this large group of underclassmen,” she said. “To have these underclassmen start up with the energy they’ve had is directly related to the energy our returners have had.” As always, Temple has scheduled many of the best teams in Division I, and will be playing against competition from eight of the 12 conferences in the NCAA. The Owls begin their season in the Conference Cup Tournament hosted by nearby Saint Joseph’s University. Temple will face defending NCAA champion Syracuse on Friday, Aug. 26 before playing host Saint Joseph’s on Sunday, Aug. 28. The home schedule begins for the Owls on Friday, Sept. 2 against Penn State at 6 p.m., and continues with a game against La Salle on Sunday, Sept. 4. “Our home opening weekend features two in-state opponents,” said Freeman. “Our long-lasting and respected rivalry with Penn State will make for an exciting playing experience, and La Salle’s proximity to Temple will also draw some big crowds. It should be an excellent weekend of hockey.” The contests against Penn State and La Salle will be the first two in a six-game homestand for Temple that also includes city rival Drexel (Sept. 11) and region rival Delaware (Sept. 9). The fifth game of that homestand sees the Owls starting BIG EAST play, hosting Providence on Friday, Sept. 16. The former six-team BIG EAST has now grown to eight in 2016, with the addition of Liberty and Quinnipiac. The new schools are the last two Temple will face in conference play. The Owls’ 2015 season turned around in a 1-0 defeat of #20 Old Dominion on the road, and Temple will face the Monarchs at home this season on Oct. 7. The BIG EAST Tournament is set for Friday and Sunday, Nov. 4 and 6 at Temple and will feature the top four teams following the conclusion of the regular season. The tournament winner receives an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament, which begins on Saturday, Nov. 12. “In order for us to identify what we need to work on, I think it’s important that we play the best teams,” said Freeman. “In order for us to constantly push the envelope on how far we can go, we have to continually put ourselves in a position to be challenged. That’s the way we’re always going to work things, to help put us in the best situation at the end of the year and our BIG EAST Championships.”
HEAD COACH MARYBETH FREEMAN SECOND YEAR • OLD DOMINION ‘03 CAREER RECORD 54-54 (SEVEN YEARS) Marybeth Freeman, a five-time NCAA Division I champion as a player and coach, was hired as the head field hockey coach of Temple University on March 10, 2015. In Freeman’s debut season, the Owls made a second consecutive appearance in the BIG EAST Tournament Final before falling to two-time defending national champion and second-ranked UConn. The end of the season saw a five-game win streak for Temple prior to the conference championship game. The run showed what the Owls were capable of, starting with a 1-0 upset of #12 Old Dominion on Oct. 20. Freeman had four Longstreth/NFHCA All-Region selections, four All-BIG EAST selections and a Longstreth/NFHCA All-American in her first season at Temple. Off the field, Freeman’s Owls earned the BIG EAST Team Academic Excellence Award in field hockey for a second year in a row, and 20 of her student-athletes were named to the BIG EAST All-Academic Team. Freeman came to Temple after spending five seasons as the head field hockey coach for Columbia University, and was previously an assistant coach at the University of Maryland for seven seasons, winning three national championships with the Terps.
