The bar has been raised by the Temple field hockey program, and in 2014 the Owls have the pieces in place to achieve even greater success. Coming off a season that saw Temple nationally ranked for the first time in 12 years, the Owls return leading scorer and All-American Amber Youtz for her final season as well as a host of other veterans and talented newcomers. Amanda Janney begins her 10th season at the helm after earning her 100th victory near the end of the 2013 slate. Janney has taken the Owls to a conference tournament in each year of her career, and despite the new challenges that came with joining the BIG EAST Conference last season, the tournament berth was earned yet again. The Owls finished fourth in the powerhouse league and were knocked out in the BIG EAST semifinals by eventual national champion Connecticut. Janney has continued to build the program to new heights, and is proud of how far the team has come. “I have seen the program make huge strides,” she said. “Every year we've gotten better and made small steps. It's very rewarding to now have a team that's consistently a top 20 contender and able to beat some of the best teams in the nation. We're able to play with anybody and we also have some of the best players in the nation. “The team has really developed for the better, and we're very proud that they also have such strong characteristics academically. They're focused on their majors, getting internships, and we really feel that we're providing the complete experience for our student-athletes.” Leading the offense again this season will be Youtz, who was named an All-American as a junior despite missing four full games due to injury. She has continued to

excel in the offseason, and was named to the U.S. Field Hockey Indoor National Team along with incoming freshman Maiyah Brown. Other Owls to watch out for on offense and in the midfield include sophomore Katie Foran and juniors Sarah Deck and Alyssa Delp. Foran and Delp combined for nine goals and nine assists last season, while both Deck and Delp started in all 20 games. The Owls will be without second-leading scorer and all-region honoree Molly Doyle, who was lost to graduation along with starters Lauren Hunt and Mandi Shearer. The trio accounted for 13 goals and 16 assists last season, but Janney is confident that the team will be able to replace that loss. Leadership on and off the field will come from the Owls’ three team captains- seniors Nicole Kroener and Lizzy Millen along with junior Rachel Steinman. Kroener has proven to be a valuable weapon on penalty corners for Temple, and led the team last season with 10 assists while also scoring three goals. Steinman helps anchor a strong defensive unit that includes Millen, the team’s starting goalkeeper for the past three seasons and an All-BIG EAST Second Team honoree last year. Another defensive anchor who flies under the radar statistically is junior Taylor Shronk, who recorded two defensive saves last year. “There aren't many weak spots for us in terms of holes we need to fill,” said Janney. “We expect to have an outstanding season and build off the success we had last year being ranked in the Top 20. We know we can beat the teams on our schedule and we expect to do very well in our second year in the BIG EAST Conference.”

2014 TEMPLE UNIVERSITY FIELD HOCKEY TEMPLE MOVES UP TO #13 IN NFHCA COACHES POLL Temple moved up three spots this week in the Penn Monto/NFHCA Division I National Coaches Poll, as the Owls are now ranked #13 in the Top 20 poll. The newlyreleased poll is the second of the 2014 season, and Temple had entered the rankings at #16 in week one. Temple is the second-highest ranked team in the BIG EAST Conference, topped only by defending national champ UConn at #5 in the rankings. The Owls' only losses so far are to top five teams, both of whom are now ranked even higher after playing Temple. After opening the season with a 4-2 win over Northeastern, the Owls defeated then-#10 UMass 2-0. Temple also boasts a 6-1 win at Rutgers and a 5-1 win vs. Delaware. The Owls lost 3-0 at then-#4 Duke, now ranked third, and most recently Temple lost 3-0 at #Maryland. The Terrapins have now moved up to the second spot. MILLEN IN THE NATIONAL RANKINGS Temple senior goalkeeper Lizzy Millen has played a major role in the Owls' success so far. Millen currently ranks 13th among all goalkeepers in NCAA Division I with a saves percentage of .814. Her goals-against average of 1.56 ranks 23rd, and her saves per game average of 5.83 ranks 24th in the nation and first in the BIG EAST. Millen has twice been named the BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Week in just the first three weeks of the season. STIFLING THE SCARLET KNIGHTS In the 37 times Temple and Rutgers have played each other, the Owls had only once before scored at least six goals against the Scarlet Knights. In 1991, Temple beat Rutgers 7-1 at home. On Sept. 5 on the road, the Owls earned a 6-1 victory thanks to three goals from Tricia Light in her first career hat trick. Also scoring for Temple was freshman Rachael Mueller with her second goal of the season. Senior Nicole Kroener and junior Alyssa Delp both recorded their first goals of the season in the win, while sophomore Paige Gross notched her fourth assist of the year. MULTIPLE HONORS FOR MILLEN Senior goalkeeper Lizzy Millen was named both the BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Week and the Corvias ECAC Defensive Player of the Week after the opening week of the 2014 season. Millen was credited with both of Temple's wins in the opening weekend of play, boasting league-best marks of an .833 saves percentage and a 0.52 goals against average. She made two stops in a 4-2 win over Northeastern before rejecting three shots against #10 UMass en route to a 2-0 shutout victory. In week three, Millen tied her career high with 17 saves at #3 Maryland, while also making two saves vs. Delaware and exiting that game after the first half with a 5-0 lead. For those efforts, Millen was again named the BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Week. EIGHT RANKED TEAMS ON THE SLATE As of the release of the Penn Monto/NFHCA Preseason Coaches Poll, Temple would face eight teams ranked in the Top 25. The Owls took down one of those, then-#10 UMass, who is no longer ranked. Temple’s two losses so far are to #4 Duke and #3 Maryland, both by scores of 3-0. The next ranked opponent the Owls will face is Penn State, currently #6, at home on Oct. 5. YOUTZ MOVING UP THE RANKS Senior Amber Youtz has already made her mark at Temple in a big way, and she is continuing to move up the career record lists in her final season. With four goals so far this season, Youtz has now scored 46 goals as an Owl to tie for fifth place all-time in the record books. She needs five more goals to tie for fourth.

PHILA FIELD HOCKEY DAY Temple field hockey is dedicating Sunday’s game to Phila Field Hockey Day, a celebration of field hockey in the Philadelphia area at all levels: college, high school and youth programs. It is day designed to recognize the present and future greatness of the sport with Phila-area roots. Phila Field Hockey Day is presented by Temple Field Hockey and philafieldhockey.com.

Youtz has recorded 112 career points to rank fifth, needing five more to tie for fourth in that category as well. Youtz will likely move into the top 10 for assists before long. She currently has 20 assists in her career, needing three more to break into a tie for 10th place.

The day will kick off with a Philly-powerful Division I field hockey game between Temple and Drexel, followed by a junior field hockey scrimmage between Filia Sports and the Mystx Sprouts. Olympian Claire Laubach will be on hand Sunday and will share autographed photos from her USA Field Hockey glory days. Temple and Drexel players will have a meet and greet with fans after the youth scrimmage. All youth teams in attendance will be recognized by name during the opening announcements.

2014 TEMPLE UNIVERSITY FIELD HOCKEY 2013 IN REVIEw The Owls are coming off one of their best seasons in program history after finishing at 14-6 overall and 4-3 in the BIG EAST Conference in 2013. Temple was nationally-ranked for the last nine weeks of the 2013 season, entering the NFHCA Coaches Poll at #11 on Sept. 10, and earning a #19 ranking prior to its final game of the year. The Owls finished at #17 in the NCAA RPI rankings, and was one of four BIG EAST teams to rank in the RPI Top 20. Then-junior Amber Youtz led all players in Division I for much of the season in goals per game and points per game. She was named to the 2013 Longstreth/NFHCA All-America Second Team, the 2013 Longstreth/NFHCA All-Region First Team, the 2013 All-BIG EAST First Team, the 2013 Preseason All-BIG EAST Team, and the 2013 BIG EAST All-Tournament Team. GK Lizzy Millen, a junior in 2013, posted five shutouts and was named to the BIG EAST Second Team. Temple lost three seniors to graduation, including Molly Doyle who was named to the Longstreth/NFHCA All-Region Second Team and the BIG EAST Second Team. The Owls earned the fourth seed in the 2013 BIG EAST Tournament, advancing to a conference tournament for the 11th year in a row. Their season ended in the BIG EAST Semifinals with a 3-0 loss to #8 UConn, and the Huskies went on to win both the BIG EAST Tournament and NCAA Tournament. 100 FOR JANNEY Temple Head Coach Amanda Janney earned her 100th career victory on Oct. 27, 2013 in the Owls' 3-2 win at Lafayette, and her career record now stands at 104-89.
