Tenth Sunday after Pentecost August 12 & 13, 2017 5:00 p.m. & 8:30 a.m. AS WE GATHER “Keep your eyes on the ball!” Is there a more common refrain from coaches teaching baseball, football, tennis or some other sport involving a ball? Yet for all the times this instruction is given, the eyes are so easily distracted. In today’s Gospel lesson, Jesus gave Peter the command to “come.” Peter climbed out of the boat and he did it! He walked on water! But then Peter took his eyes off the Lord and looked at the wind and the waves. Immediately, Peter began to sink. Christians today also allow themselves to be distracted by the world around us. When we take our eyes off Jesus, we fare about as well as did Peter – we sink. Thanks be to God, in Word, Baptism, and the Lord’s Supper, Jesus has reached out His hand and rescued us! He keeps His eye on us!

Pastor:

People:

Our gracious God has promised to hear us for Jesus’ sake when we call out for pardon and peace. Let us go to Him, confessing our sins. Heavenly Father, we admit that we have often put our own wills ahead of Yours. In our pride we have demanded reasons from You for what has gone wrong in our lives. We have not called out to You in humility, but have relied on our own righteousness instead of asking You for mercy and grace. We have let the turmoil of the world around us distract us from keeping our lives focused on Your strong Word and the salvation it proclaims. For the sake of Your Son, Jesus Christ, our Lord, forgive us. By the power of Your Holy Spirit, move us to paths in which we may serve You and proclaim Your saving Word to those who do not know Your loving promises. Although God’s Law condemns us in our fallen condition, with all our sinful thoughts, words, and deeds, He has promised that “everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.” As a called and ordained servant of Christ, and by His authority, I therefore forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the  Son and of the Holy Spirit. Amen. Thanks be to God!

EXCHANGE OF PEACE

WELCOME  WORD  OLD TESTAMENT READING

Job 38:4–18

(God puts Job in his place.) "Where were you when I laid the earth's foundation? Tell me, if you understand. 5 Who marked off its dimensions? Surely you know! Who stretched a measuring line across it? 6 On what were its footings set, or who laid its cornerstone-- 7 while the morning stars sang together and all the angels shouted for joy? 4

"Who shut up the sea behind doors when it burst forth from the womb, 9 when I made the clouds its garment and wrapped it in thick darkness, 10 when I fixed limits for it and set its doors and bars in place, 11 when I said, 'This far you may come and no farther; here is where your proud waves halt'? 8

"Have you ever given orders to the morning, or shown the dawn its place, 13 that it might take the earth by the edges and shake the wicked out of it? 14 The earth takes shape like clay under a seal; its features stand out like those of a garment. 15 The wicked are denied their light, and their upraised arm is broken. 12

4

"Have you journeyed to the springs of the sea or walked in the recesses of the deep? Have the gates of death been shown to you? Have you seen the gates of the shadow of death? 18 Have you comprehended the vast expanses of the earth? Tell me, if you know all this. 16 17

ANTHEM 5:00

“Holy Spirit”

B. and K. Torwalt

EPISTLE

Romans 10:5–17 (Everyone who calls on the Lord will be saved.)

Moses describes in this way the righteousness that is by the law: "The man who does these things will live by them." 6 But the righteousness that is by faith says: "Do not say in your heart, 'Who will ascend into heaven?'" (that is, to bring Christ down) 7 "or 'Who will descend into the deep?'" (that is, to bring Christ up from the dead). 8 But what does it say? "The word is near you; it is in your mouth and in your heart," that is, the word of faith we are proclaiming: 9 That if you confess with your mouth, "Jesus is Lord," and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. 10 For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you confess and are saved. 11 As the Scripture says, "Anyone who trusts in him will never be put to shame." 12 For there is no difference between Jew and Gentile--the same Lord is Lord of all and richly blesses all who call on him, 13 for, "Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved." 5

How, then, can they call on the one they have not believed in? And how can they believe in the one of whom they have not heard? And how can they hear without someone preaching to them? 15 And how can they preach unless they are sent? As it is written, "How beautiful are the feet of those who bring good news!" (continued on next page) 14

5

But not all the Israelites accepted the good news. For Isaiah says, "Lord, who has believed our message?" 17 Consequently, faith comes from hearing the message, and the message is heard through the word of Christ. 16

Jesus Loves Me

The Holy Gospel according to St. Matthew, the fourteenth chapter. Glory to You, O Lord.

HOLY GOSPEL

Matthew 14:22–33 (Jesus invites Peter to walk to Him on the water.)

Immediately Jesus made the disciples get into the boat and go on ahead of him to the other side, while he dismissed the crowd. 23 After he had dismissed them, he went up on a mountainside by himself to pray. When evening came, he was there alone, 24 but the boat was already a considerable distance from land, buffeted by the waves because the wind was against it. 22

During the fourth watch of the night Jesus went out to them, walking on the lake. When the disciples saw him walking on the lake, they were terrified. "It's a ghost," they said, and cried out in fear. 25 26

27

But Jesus immediately said to them: "Take courage! It is I. Don't be afraid."

28

"Lord, if it's you," Peter replied, "tell me to come to you on the water."

29

"Come," he said.

Then Peter got down out of the boat, walked on the water and came toward Jesus. 30 But when he saw the wind, he was afraid and, beginning to sink, cried out, "Lord, save me!" 6

Immediately Jesus reached out his hand and caught him. "You of little faith," he said, "why did you doubt?" 31

And when they climbed into the boat, the wind died down. 33 Then those who were in the boat worshiped him, saying, "Truly you are the Son of God." 32

PROCLAMATION OF THE WORD

LUTHER’S SMALL CATECHISM In this 500th anniversary year of the Reformation, each weekend we will recite together a section of Luther’s Small Catechism. Written by Martin Luther in 1529 in question and answer format, the Small Catechism explores the Six Chief Parts of Christian Doctrine: the Ten Commandments, the Apostles’ Creed, the Lord’s Prayer, the Sacrament of Holy Baptism, Confession, and the Sacrament of the Altar. Luther intended the catechism to be a prayer book for individuals and families and a powerful tool for the Christian life because it provides a brief, clear summary of God’s Word on the essentials of the Christian faith. Holy Baptism: Part 4 What does such baptizing with water indicate? It indicates that the old Adam in us should by daily contrition and repentance be drowned and die with all sins and evil desires, and that a new man should daily emerge and arise to live before God in righteousness and purity forever. Where is this written? St. Paul writes in Romans, chapter six: “We were therefore buried with Him through baptism into death in order that, just as Christ was raised form the dead through the glory of the Father, we too may live a new life.” Romans 6:4 7

APOSTLES’ CREED I believe in God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth. And in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried. He descended into hell. The third day He rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty. From thence He will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.
