Teram Kangri III. O ur expedition was com posed of M asatoshi Sato, Zenzo Shikanai, M itsutaka K udo, M asanori Oka, Takayoshi Sato, Osam u N onom ura, Tetsuo Hasegawa, Junji K urotaki, Kenji N ikko, A kira M arui, G aku Ishi and me as leader. We left K hapalu on June 1 w ith 150 porters. D espite porter troubles, we crossed the Bilafond La and the Siachen G lacier to establish Base Cam p at 16,900 feet on the T eram G lacier on June 26. We placed Cam p I at 17,850 feet at the foot of the gully on the right side of the south ridge. Cam p II was above the gully on the ridge at 19,850 feet. A fter fixing rope, we placed Cam p III at 21,150 feet. Snowfall delayed us for a week. On July 29 we placed Cam p IV on the ridge between T eram III and I at 23,200 feet. A fter three attem pts, on A ugust 3 Oka, K urotaki and K udo reached the sum m it (24,219 feet). On the descent between Cam p I and Base Cam p O ka fell through a snow bridge into a stream on the surface of the glacier and was drowned. S u m it o H
