As part of the history curriculum we will learning about heroes fro m the past. We will be having a superhero day when we can all dress up and be superheroes. A date to be confirmed by parent mail. English English , takes place throughout our curriculum, we have English lessons 4 days a week as well as phonics, handwriting and a key word session for Year 1 and a spelling workshop for the Year 2’s. We will be reading lots of hero based stories such as ‘Superworm’ by Julia Donaldson and simple comic strips and using them as a stimulus for our writing.
Our main focuses this term are writing in sentences, leaving finger spaces between words and forming letters correctly, sitting on the line. In addition the Year 2’s will be working on extended sentences. Maths Maths takes place daily and involves a lot of counting, mental maths and opportunities to explore maths practically as well as with more formal recording. This term both year groups are focussing on Numbers and the number system, Properties of shapes and Addition and subtraction. There will be different learning objectives within these areas for the two year groups. Science On Wednesday afternoon , as in keeping with the whole school teaching of Science, children will be taught in year groups. This will give the children the opportunity to develop the skills appropriate to their development and work with their peers.

Homework
PE will be taught on Mondays and Thursdays. Please ensure that PE kits (including footwear) are in school every day to allow for any timetable changes. Earrings cannot be worn for PE. These must be removed for the lesson If your child is unable to remove them themselves then please ensure they are removed before coming to school. If your child has had their ears pierced within the last six weeks please come in and speak to us (you will be asked to provide micro-pore tape to cover the earring backs)
In line with the whole-school homework policy your child will be expected to: Read at least four times each week and record in the reading record.
Reading in Kestrels Reading is so important in Year 1 and 2 so please read with your child as often as possible. We aim for your child to read to an adult individually each week. Year 2’s will also read as part of a group each week. If you wish to change your child’s book more regularly then please choose a book from the same colour band from the bottom shelf in the corridor outside Barn Owls classroom. One good resource is Oxford Owls which is free and provides levelled books to read on computers or tablets (just mute the volume!) Set up a login and search ebooks on www.oxfordowls.co.uk
Practise their key words (Both reading and spelling)
Complete any pieces of homework set—usually weekly.
There is more detail about this in your child's ‘My work at home book’. They will be bringing these home in Week 3. Rewards Children will continue to be rewarded through the whole school individual smiley face system so look out for those bronze awards! If you have any concerns or questions please pop in and see one of us. After school is usually an easier time for us to speak but if it is something which is likely to affect your child’s day please do catch us in the morning. Yours sincerely, Mrs Knight, Mrs Holderness, Mrs Whittington and Miss Roberts
