QUICK HITS
l Texas owns an INCREDIBLE season-opening winning streak dating all the way back to the initial varsity season for the program in 1997. The Longhorns have won ALL 19 of their season openers, including high-profile wins over No. 3 UCLA (2007), Florida State (2009), No. 20 DePaul (2010), Louisville (2011) and No. 17 LSU (2014). During that stretch, Texas has registered 12 shutouts and outscored its opponents by a combined 129-10. The streak grew during the 2015 season as UT blasted past UCSB at the Kajikawa Classic in Tempe, Ariz., 15-0 (5 inn.). l Senior center fielder Lindsey Stephens begins the 2016 season on the USA Softball National Collegiate Player of the Year Top 50 Watch List for the second consecutive campaign. The Beaumont, Texas, native enters the year ranked second in slugging percentage (.689), tied for third in triples (10), seventh in batting average (.344), RBIs (120) and on-base percentage (.420) and tied for seventh in HR’s (32) in the UT career record book. l Texas opens the 2016 season among those teams “receiving votes” in both the USA Today/National Fastpitch Coaches Association and ESPN.com/USA Softball polls. In the NFCA rankings, UT earned 12 points, good to sit at 31st overall, while in the USA Softball listing, the Horns tallied 13 points to rate 28th overall. l Taking a quick look back at the 2015 edition of the Texas Classic, the Longhorns went 4-1 with wins over IPFW, Wichita State and Colorado State and a loss to Wichita State (4-6). From an individual standpoint, first baseman Holly Kern and shortstop Devon Tunning each had quite the weekend offensively. Having entered the event with one HR and just 26 total RBIs over 78 games in her UT career, Kern went off to the tune of a .438 batting average, three doubles, a HR and a staggering 15 RBIs over five games. Tunning led the squad over the five match-ups in batting average (.636), slugging percentage (.909), walks (six) and on-base percentage (.765) after reaching in 13 of her 17 plate appearances (seven hits, six walks). l Texas is very familiar with two of this weekend’s Texas Classic opponents having played both Arkansas and North Carolina in 2015. The Longhorns swept a three-game series at Arkansas last year, with two of those games requiring extra innings, and lead the all-time series against the Razorbacks, 4-0. During the Carolina Classic in Chapel Hill, N.C., in 2015, UNC took an 8-3 decision from the Horns, but Texas still leads the all-time series, 4-2-1. UT will be facing North Dakota State for the first time in program history. l Under the guidance of head coach Connie Clark, Texas has always proven to be a fearsome force during the opening month of February. The Longhorns hold a stellar 233-84-2 overall record during the month, having won approximately 74% of their games all-time.

GAME NOTES SEASON OPENERS = WINS Texas owns an INCREDIBLE season-opening winning streak dating all the way back to the initial varsity season for the program in 1997. The Longhorns have won ALL 19 of their season openers, including high-profile wins over No. 3 UCLA (2007), Florida State (2009), No. 20 DePaul (2010), Louisville (2011) and No. 17 LSU (2014). The streak grew during the 2015 season as UT blasted past UCSB at the Kajikawa Classic in Tempe, Ariz., 15-0 (5 inn.). 400TH COMBINED HOME WIN COULD COME THIS WEEKEND! Texas softball could hit a milestone this weekend as the Longhorns’ program enters play with a 399-105-2 (.791) all-time home record combining efforts at both Red & Charline McCombs Field and the East Austin Youth Complex (played the program’s inaugural 1997 varsity season there). At McCombs Field, UT is 385-98-2 (.796) all-time, and could hit the 400-win mark at the facility later this season. VERSUS THIS WEEKEND’S OPPONENTS Texas is very familiar with two of this weekend’s Texas Classic opponents having played both Arkansas and North Carolina in 2015. The Longhorns swept a three-game series at Arkansas last year, with two of those games requiring extra innings and lead the all-time series against the Razorbacks, 4-0. UT will be facing North Dakota State for the first time in program history. SOME ARE STILL STREAKING Several Longhorns hitters enter the 2016 season with double-digit streaks still going from 2015. Junior shortstop Devon Tunning will begin the new campaign riding a career-long 11-game hitting streak and has also reached base safely in her last 11 contests. Senior center fielder Lindsey Stephens will begin the year having reached base safely in the last 10 games of 2015. LOADS OF PRODUCTION RETURNING Texas returns eight of nine everyday positional starters and 68 percent of its total pitching victories from last season’s 38-win squad that finished second in the Big 12 standings. 2016 TEXAS SOFTBALL GAME NOTES standpoint, the Longhorns bring back 88 percent of their run production, 87 percent of the total hits, 86 percent of the doubles, 100 percent of the triples, 95 percent of the HR’s, 88 percent of the RBIs, 89 percent of the total bases, 90 percent of the walks and 93 percent of the stolen bases from last year’s group that hit .302 as a team and finished the season in the school single-season top five in numerous categories, while striking out the second-fewest times in program history. FEARSOME DURING FEBRUARY! Under the guidance of head coach Connie Clark, Texas has always proven to be a fearsome force during the opening month of February. The Longhorns hold a stellar 233-84-2 overall record during the month, having won approximately 74% of their games. UT was 11-7 in 18 February contests during the 2015 campaign. A list of the program’s top February records are below: Year February Record Year February Record 2003 17-1 (.944) 2011 14-2 (.875) 2006 17-1 (.944) 2005 10-2 (.833) 2013 16-1 (.941) 2007 12-3 (.800) 2012 14-1 (.933) 1997 9-3 (.750) 2010 14-2 (.875) 2009 13-4 (.765) D.I.R.T./PROVE EM WRONG The foundation of the Texas softball program is D.I.R.T. which stands for Discipline, Integrity, Respect and Teamwork. Those four words serve as guidelines for how every UT softball player should strive to live both on and off the diamond. Factors involved include having a championship mindset every day, making the right social decisions, holding yourself and your teammates accountable and doing the work in the classroom. Texas even has warm-up shirts with the D.I.R.T. motto written on the back.
“PROVE EM WRONG” is a motto coined by this year’s team that represents their thoughts heading into the season. Their desire is to prove any doubters that Texas can win the Big 12 or make the WCWS wrong.
AND THE BIG 12 PRESEASON SURVEY...SAYS! Texas was chosen to finish third in the annual Big 12 Conference preseason poll as voted by the league’s coaches. UT has now been picked to finish in the Big 12 Conference’s top three for six consecutive seasons. The Sooners nabbed the top position for the seventh time in the last eight seasons after receiving five of the seven possible first-place votes (coaches couldn’t vote for their own team) and 35 total points. Baylor ranked second by garnering the remaining two first-place tallies and 32 points. The Longhorns were a close third, reaping 26 points, while Kansas (20 points) and Oklahoma State (14 points) held down the fourth and fifth slots, respectively. Texas Tech (13 points) and Iowa State (seven points) rounded out the listing of seven league squads in that order. STEPHENS IS ONE TO WATCH! After an impressive 2015 campaign, UT senior outfielder Lindsey Stephens has been included as one of 50 selections on the annual USA Softball National Collegiate Player of the Year Watch List, the highest award in collegiate softball, for the second consecutive season. Stephens led the Longhorns last year in runs (44), hits (58), triples (five), HR’s (15), RBIs (47), total bases (118), slugging percentage (.698) and stolen bases (14) while starting all 55 possible games in center field. A native of Riverside, Calif., Gortarez has taken a slightly different route to the Texas softball program than her peers, lettering four years in varsity baseball along with cross country, basketball and track & field at Hillcrest High School. As the starting shortstop for the U.S. Women’s National Baseball Team, she helped lead the Red, White & Blue to a gold medal this past summer at the 2015 Pan American Games in Ajax, Ontario, Canada, to a silver medal at the 2014 Women’s World Cup of Baseball in Japan and to the title at the 2015 COPABE Pan American Games qualifier in the Dominican Republic. During the successful Pan Am Games run, Gortarez posted a .484 on-base percentage as the everyday lead-off hitter while scoring eight runs, walking eight times, managing a double, a triple and a pair of RBIs over eight games played. At the 2014 Women’s Baseball World Cup, she went 8-for-16 (.500) with a double and three RBIs and was named the tournament’s top defensive player. For her efforts on the basketball court, Gortarez previously earned a second-team all-league selection. A standout softball and volleyball player at Salado High School, Schattle heads to the Forty Acres with a slew of accolades in tow. Schattle is a two-time Collin Street Bakery/Texas Sports Writers Association (TXSWA) All-State Honorable Mention choice (2014, 2015), a 2015 Killeen Daily Herald All-Area First Team infielder and the newspaper’s 2013 Newcomer of the Year, both a first-team All-District 22-2A (2013) and first-team All-District 25-4A (2015) shortstop and was named the All-District 22-2A Most Valuable Player in 2014. As a sophomore in 2014, she earned Killeen Daily Herald All-Area Offensive MVP honors after hitting .591 overall with an on-base percentage of .645, 10 HR’s and 75 RBIs in 151 at-bats while helping Salado reach the state’s elite eight for the first time in school history. For her career, Schattle is batting at a .527 overall clip with 149 hits, 43 doubles, 20 triples, 17 HR’s, 55 walks, 139 RBIs and just 21 strikeouts over 283 total at-bats while slugging 1.000 and registering a .602 on-base percentage. Off the diamond, she recently picked up a 2015 first-team All-District 25-4A selection for her prowess on the volleyball court. Slack has lettered four times in both softball and volleyball during her scholastic career at Liberty High School. Over 91 games on the diamond, she has batted .446 overall with 131 hits in 294 at-bats, 109 runs scored, 31 doubles, 14 triples, 28 HR’s (including 15 in a single season) and 111 RBIs while slugging .931 and registering a .491 on-base percentage. A 2015 third-team Collin Street Bakery/Texas Sports Writers Association (TXSWA) All-State selection and a three-time Texas Girls Coaches Association All-State choice, Slack was also tabbed as the Southeast Texas Coaches Association (SETCA) Player of the Year in 2015 and a three-time District 23-3A Offensive Most Valuable Player (2013, 2014, co- in 2015). On the volleyball court, Slack has proven just as prolific, earning three all-state nods, four district most valuable player honors (2012, 2013, 2014, 2015) and a 2012 all-region selection. In two impressive seasons of softball at Atascocita High School in Humble, Texas, Washington has earned third-team 2014 Collin Street Bakery/ Texas Sports Writers (TXSWA) All-State honors, a second-team 2014 All-Greater Houston area selection, and a pair of first-team All-District 13-5A accolades in 2013 & 2014. As a junior in 2015, Washington hit .500 overall with a .528 on base percentage and 44 RBIs, while as a sophomore she batted at a .407 clip with 40 RBIs and a .500 on-base mark.
