Year 1 – Autumn Term Newsletter “Sensational and Let’s Celebrate” In Literacy we will…
We will be focusing on two ‘quality texts’ this term: Traction Man and The Puffin Book of Fantastic First Poems. We will explore these texts in detail through drama, shared writing, book talk and story mapping.
Each week, we will spend time to read one-to-one with the children. They will also take part in guided reading sessions to develop their comprehension and discussion skills and have the opportunity to read independently in our cosy book corners for enjoyment.
In Numeracy, we will …
In Numeracy we will be focusing on numbers 1-10 through a variety of ways such as counting sets of objects, ordinal position of numbers, finding double and half of an amount and exploring sequences. We will be identifying Maths Mastery methods such as the ten frame and the whole-part-part model to help us.
We will also be looking at adding and subtracting within 10 through number bonds and partitioning.
The children will be learning to recognise and name common 2D and 3D shapes, for example, squares and triangles and cuboid and pyramids. Along with this they will be exploring position, direction and movement, including half-turns.
The main focus in their writing this term is on sentence structure using adjectives and remembering punctuation (full stops, capital letters and exclamation marks).
In IPC, we will …
In ICT…
We will be learning about internet safety and how to use a word processor to create documents.
Children will be learning about the five senses: touch, sight, hearing, smell, taste. We will take part in fun activities relating to our senses such as a smell test and sound quiz to see if we can identify the objects focusing on one sense at a time.
In Science, we will be learning about everyday materials and will explore what objects are made from and sort them according to their properties.
In art we will be exploring how colour, pattern and shape can be used to appeal to the senses. We will look at Artists such as Bridget Riley and Victor Vasarely for inspiration and create our own art to reflect the senses.
After we have covered ‘Sensational’ we will be looking at the topic ‘Lets celebrate’ where the children will experience/learn about special events that are celebrated in different cultures over the world.
How you can support your child
Try to read with your child every night and discuss what they have read– ask questions that start with: Who..? What..? Why..? When…? Where ..? Which..? How..? Can you find in the text where….?
Ask your child to retell and act out the stories they have read.
Support your child with their homework.
Encourage children at home to talk about their favourite superheroes or even draw them!
Ask your child real life Maths problems such as counting items in the supermarket trolley!
