Hoppe to see yoou all therre!

Onward… to Nepal In 2013 I had an opportunity to travel with my dad and a team from his church to Siliguri, India. We partnered with a local Indian Christian organization called Hindustan Bible Institute (HBI) to provide retreats for local pastors and women in ministry, to encourage the boys living in HBI’s orphanage, and to visit local brothels to pray with women who had either been raised or sold into the sex trade. That time in India was special to me for two reasons: 1) I was personally inspired and strengthened by the courageous, persevering faith I witnessed in Indian Christians, and 2) I developed a friendship with a boy named Bishal with whom I continue to correspond and whose continuing education I support financially. Last Spring, after the earthquakes in Nepal, while I was concluding my seminary studies in Virginia, I received a mass-distributed email from HBI requesting volunteers to come provide grief and trauma care in areas devastated by the earthquakes. I responded at that time, with very little expectation that it might actually work for me to go to Nepal, but just a few days later, HBI contacted me and asked to stay in contact with me as they developed plans for providing disaster relief. In August, HBI invited me to come as soon as November, which took me by surprise! Thankfully, during my final interview with Church of the Redeemer, Fr. Joe and I had discussed the possibility of my traveling overseas once or twice during my curacy for ministry purposes. He expressed his and the church’s support and encouraged me to move ahead. Suddenly, November is upon us, and I am leaving in just a couple of weeks! My friend Lydia (an art therapist from Milwaukee, WI) and I will work together to facilitate grief and trauma care workshops for approximately 25 Nepalese pastors. These men already live and work in areas affected by the earthquakes, not to mention political unrest, religious persecution and isolation, and poverty, so they know a great deal more about suffering than Lydia and I could ever imagine. Please pray for us and ask God to empower us to be attentive listeners, cultural students, and effective communicators. Please pray that God will mysteriously and wonderfully encourage and equip pastors for their difficult work. Thank you! You all will be in my heart and in my prayers while I am away. ~Rev. Elisabeth
