CHS Says Goodbye to Those Retiring By Allison Poore Panter Staff Writer

Kathy Roberts has had a variety of classes during her 39 years of teaching. She started off as a Home Economics teacher at the Beloit Juvenile Correctional Facility. She then applied for the Family and Consumer Sciences position here. She has taught many different subjects such as Parenting, Family Living, Culinary, Human Growth and Development, Meal Management and Life Skills. After she retires, she plans on working different projects/hobbies and visiting family. Roberts will miss the USD 333 students and staff, as well as the FCCLA activities. However, she will not miss the 30 minute drive every morning. Mrs. Letourneau has been working for the USD 333 district for 25 years. She has spent 22 years as the middle school library para. After she retires, she plans on being a full-time farm/ranch wife and grandmother. She enjoyed working in the school because she got the summers off to visit friends and grandchildren. Now she will be able to do this year round. Mrs. Letourneau will not miss hearing kids’ inventive stories about why their library books are missing. She will greatly miss the library staff and the students, but she is excited to spend more time with her family. “Mr. Steve” has been working with within the school district for 13 years. Before becoming a jr. high para, he worked on the railroad and was a registered nurse. After he retires, Mr. Steve plans on travelling and relaxing with his girlfriend. He will miss the staff he works with and the kids. On the other hand, he will not miss having to wake up to an alarm clock. We are all grateful for the work Mr. Steve has done for us.

Mrs. Kelley has been teaching in Concordia for ten years, but she has been in education for 38. Over the years, she has taught PE, math, science, and at-risk for many different grades. She has also coached volleyball, track, and cross country. Once she retires, Kelley plans on relaxing, visiting her kids and grandkids, and taking a few trips. She will not miss preparing lesson plans or grading papers. However, she will miss the students and her fellow teaching staff. Overall, she has greatly enjoyed working for the USD 333 district. She has met many special kids and has worked with a great group of teachers.

City Pool’s New Addition By Chloe Beims Panther Staff Writer If you’ve been by the city pool lately you’ll have noticed that there has been a new addition. Two slides have been added to the big pool. They are located on the east side. There was controversy over this addition; taxpayers didn’t want to pay for this at first. The city will be adding two dollars to everyone’s water bill to pay for it. It will still cost two dollars to get into the pool. Admission was initially going to be free, but when it was being voted on, only a handful of people voted. Because of this, the vote was passed and admission will still cost. What prompted Concordia to make this change was that business was declining. Not as many people were using the pool. There was nothing there to attract customers. With Clay Center, Salina, Beloit, and other towns building water parks , Concor-

dia had to make a change. City officials are hoping that this will attract customers. There is also a tiny slide in the baby pool. To keep the children safe there will be a lifeguard patrolling it from now on. There will also be a lifeguard by the slides in the big pool. Another change the pool made was that they will open at 8:00 every Tuesday night and they’ll stay open until 10:00. They call this “night swim”. Typically, the pool is open to the public from 1:00 to 7:00 every day. If you’re eighteen and older then you can come at noon to swim laps for an hour. The city pool will open starting May 26. It’s open until August 12. Next time you’re looking to spend a day in the water look no further than our own city pool with it’s new addition.

Kathy Mitchell started teaching in this district in 1987, but she started teaching in 1970. She began as a library para for the Lincoln Elementary School. She started a reading program for kindergarteners where she travelled to Lincoln and Washington schools to read to kids. Later, she tutored at-risk first graders in reading. She continues to do this for grades K-4. After she retires, she plans on sleeping in, doing yard work, visiting her grandkids, and listening to first graders read. She will miss working with kids and teaching them to read, but she will not miss making lesson plans on Sunday afternoons and dealing with kids who can not stay on task. Mitchell greatly appreciates the paras who have helped her in the Title 1 reading room.

Mrs. Cyphers has been a para/librarian for the district for 22 years. Once she retires, she is planning on using her free time to scrapbook. She is also hopeful that she can take a trip to Ireland. She will miss the book fair and seeing kids get excited to buy and own their own books. However, she will not miss waking up early, and she plans on sleeping in frequently. Mrs. Cyphers would like to wish Daphne Brockman luck in future years.

Doubling the Fun at CHS By Peyton Reynolds Sports Editor Many people think that being a twin would be the coolest thing ever. Twins are two humans born during the same birth. Is being a twin really that cool though? In Concordia Junior Senior High School, there are three sets of twins: Alex and Beau Bonebrake, Misty and Ayla Collins and Sharon Applebee. Alex and Beau Bonebrake are juniors at CHS. Although when they were younger many people couldn’t tell them apart, but they are actually fraternal twins. According to Alex, having a twin brother is pretty cool. Beau, on the other hand, says that there are a few drawbacks to being a twin. “Well for me, the hardest part is trying to share a car and clothes. Alex leaves our clothes all over the floor of my room and with his daily two-hour lifting routine and infatuation with Britney, I never get the car.” The Bonebrake brothers confess that having a friend that always has your back is the best part about being a twin. Some twins have a supernatural connection. The Bonebrake boys swear that they can telepathically talk to each other. Since, Alex and Beau are fraternal, there are differences between them. Alex says that Beau is taller than he is and, “has a weirder eye.” Beau notices a social difference between them. “We have different hobbies and play different sports.” Despite the fact that these boys were born on the same day and are actually fraternal twins, Beau swears that Alex is adopted. Misty and Ayla Collins are eighth graders at CHS. These twins are identical. Ayla thinks that the coolest thing about being a twin is being able to swap places and act alike. Because they are identical, Misty states that the worst part of being a twin is everyone gets them confused.

This twin connection is a cool connection that keeps their peers and teachers on their toes. Misty and Ayla think the same. The can answer a question at the same time and have the exact same answer. One time in history class, these twins almost got in trouble for cheating, even though, they weren’t cheating. They were both writing papers on opposite sides of the room and when they handed them in, they almost had the same exact paper. The difference between this set of twins is something more social. Misty is more confident and Ayla is shy and a little taller. Although these twins may argue over silly things, you might catch them swimming together because that is their favorite hobby and of course sticking up for each other. Sharon Applebee, also known as Mrs. Applebee, also has a fraternal twin sister, Karen. Applebee states that she values the closeness that she has with her twin because it is way different than the relationship she has with her other siblings. Although they may be really close, the hardest part about being a twin is the competition they have with each other. Since Sharon and Karen are not identical twins they have different physical features. Karen is three inches taller. Also, Applebee states that Karen is a leader and she is a follower. If anyone ever sees Sharon and Karen together and they start talking, they may notice that their voice sounds very similar. Being a twin is super unique. They get to have a lifelong best friend. The connections though, that all three sets of these twins share is a connection not everyone gets to experience.

Memorable Movies

Emily Daniels Panther Staff Writer There have been many memorable movies throughout time. Fried Green Tomatoes, Some Like it Hot and The Greatest Showman are just a few of the great films that have been made. Horror movies and romantic comedies are both great genres to choose from. There are millions of movies out there just waiting for you to find them. Horror movies are a terrifying way to watch your biggest fears play out on the big screen. They are a genre that is either loved or hated. There is no in between. There are many cult classics in the horror film industry. Some of them are Scream, Paranormal Activity, and Chucky. However there are few that rival the original Exorcist. This is a movie that still terrifies both the people who have seen it and the actors who played roles. Some horror movies are so scary that even the actors think the sets are haunted. This was the case for many actors in The Exorcist. Many believe that the set itself was haunted. There were fires, deaths on set, and the movie was based on a true story. It makes you wonder if there is truth behind some of these horrific events that take place in movies. Next time you sit down to your favorite horror movie don't forget to lock your doors and leave a light on because you never know what could be lurking in the dark. Romantic comedies often get a bad rap for being “girly.” However, many people misunderstand why they are so popular. Rom Coms all have a few things in common. They all have a love interest who plays hard to get. Then the lead characters fall in love and everything seems to being going great when suddenly tragedy strikes and the couple splits. This is how all of the great Rom Coms begin. However, they tend to differ from there. In the end some end with the guy getting the girl and they live happily ever after, but some like to take it a different direction. In the end the guy does not get the girl, ending the movie with the audience always upset because the love story ended on a sour note. These are some of our generation’s most memorable and loved movies. Including The Fault in Our Stars, Me Before You and A Walk to Remember are examples. However, they have been around for hundreds of years. Just look at one of Shakespeare's most famous plays, Midsummer Night’s Dream. Horror movies and Rom Coms both share one key factor that brings movie goers together. They provide an escape. The movie industry is a booming industry that provides the audience with a magical escape, that will hopefully continue for generations to come.

Freshman Panther Wins Fourth at State Forensics By Ashton Hittle Panther Staff Editor

On Saturday May 5th one of our own received 4th at State in Forensics. Conner Thrash, a freshman here at CJSHS, has exceeded freshman expectations. Thrash says that he has practiced at least once a day since his first tournament. That is the one thing that Mr. Morris has stressed to him, practice, practice, practice. Conner is in two events this year. He competed in an Acting Duet with Ariel Dewitt and an Original Oration, a 10-minute persuasive speech. “I honestly never thought I would even place at a tournament, let alone make it to State! But my very first tournament I went to I placed 2nd, and it qualified me. I was very shook to say the least!” Thrash stated. Thrash’s biggest supporter is his mom. Throughout the semester she has posted his successes on Facebook to keep everyone updated. She gave him an aromatherapy bracelet so he could calm his anxiety. “I probably looked like a crazy person smelling my wrist trying so hard to not freak out.” Original Oration is an event which gives the listener a new and unique way to view a universal topic. The topic he spoke about is names and how they are much more than what people expect and should not be used for stereotyping. The hardest part for his him was speed control. Because he had it memorized he would forget he was talking and go on autopilot. He had to work hard to fix that so that he could make it meaningful and have a better performance. The hardest part of Original Oration is trying to find an interesting topic that intrigues people. At a normal tournament in order to qualify for State, you have to place first or second in your event. Your school’s division determines what championship you go to. Concordia is a 4A school, which is the biggest division in Kansas, so the CHS team went to Topeka this year and

competed against the other 4A schools in Kansas. Mr. Morris is very proud of Conner and is encouraging all of the students and staff to congratulate him as well. “I would definitely add that more people need to try out Forensics. People tend to automatically shut it out when they hear that you have to go to competitions and perform, but it honestly is so much fun. I used to be absolutely terrified to do anything in front of people, but I stepped out of my comfort zone and it really paid off. It’s not as scary as you think. The thing that really kept me going was knowing that the only person watching me perform was the judge. So if I messed up or completely embarrassed myself it was only one person, who I would never see again, watching me. That was a plus.” Morris helped Conner by helping him shape the speech he had written into a persuasive speech. Morris told Conner what he should add or take out. “But the lion’s share of the work was done by Conner,” Morris said. He wrote the speech and practiced it in front of Morris and the class many times. Conner also went out of his way to attend almost all of the meets that Concordia attended. Forensics is not divided up like it is in most sports. The 4A State tournament is the largest of all classifications. There were 51 schools there, with almost 500 entries. This included schools ranging in size from Andover Central with almost 800 students, down to Colby with 260. Conner was in an event against 39 other students from all over Kansas.
