Bulletin Board Farewell to Britt This summer I was blessed to join the 4-H staff and be the summer assistant for 2014. Although I have been a 4-H member for eleven years and have completed numerous projects of my own, I never realized just how much work went into preparing for the Yates County Fair. This summer has been a blast. I learned just how much goes on after the fair and I have learned to appreciate the vouchers. When the fun of the fair stops the real work begins. My wish is that each and every one of the youth involved in the 4-H program stays involved as long as I have, to be able to experience all of the great opportunities the 4-H program can bring to you and to step out of your comfort zone to explore new project areas and to get your friends involved with you. So I leave by saying go on and Make the Best Better! ~Britt

Great job to all!
Humane Society Country Fair
Several 4-H’ers Spend July 4th Painting the Fairgrounds
On Saturday, July 19th several 4-H members and parents represented the Yates County 4-H program by volunteering at the Yates County Humane Society’s Country Fair fundraiser event. Ben Clark (with the help of his mom, Karen) brought his Grand Champion Holstein from the Yates County fair to the event to help educate the public on dairy cattle. Blaise and Alex Cox and Kayla, Morgan, and Sue Andersen were also at the event to help in the 4-H booth, promoting 4-H to those in attendance. Great job volunteering for a local organization while helping promote 4-H at the same time!
Since the weather didn’t cooperate for fair cleanup, we were very lucky to have some helping hands agree to spend the morning of their July 4th holiday painting areas of the fairgrounds. In just a few short hours, the front porch of the dairy bar received a touch up and the 4-H Judge’s Stand by the horse ring received a much needed update. A HUGE thank you to Angie, Blaise, and Alex Cox, Laura and Alexis McDougal, and Laura, Rob, and Kayleigh Hight for helping put the last minute touches on the fairgrounds in preparation for the 2014 Yates County Fair!!

Bulletin Board Drive for the Penn Yan Living Well Congratulations to the International Harvesters! They are this year’s winner of our annual 4-H community service drive, sponsored by Yates County 4-H Teen Ambassadors. Many items were collected that have been and will be donated to the Penn Yan Living Well. Thank you to all who participated. Your help made a BIG difference in the lives of local community members!
Introducing—Yates County 4-H Spirit Award Yates County Teen Ambassadors met earlier this year to discuss how to increase 4-H enrollment in Yates County. After an evening of brainstorming, they decided to challenge current 4-H members to recruit as many friends as they could to join 4-H. This resulted in the creation of the Yates County 4-H Spirit Award! From August 1st – September 30th, 4-H members are encouraged to invite their friends to enroll in Yates County 4-H. All new members enrolling between these dates will automatically be enrolled in the 2014/2015 4-H year, which starts on October 1st, 2014. Enrollment forms are available at the 4-H office or can be printed off our 4-H website – just look on the forms page! In order to get credit for enrolling someone new in 4-H, each person you refer to join should write your name at the top of their enrollment form. The 4-H office will keep track of referrals and the 4-H member with the most referrals will receive a trophy at Achievement Night! Contact Jen at the 4-H office with any questions!

Bulletin Board International Harvesters Get Their Garden On
CLUB NEWS
The International Harvesters have been busy with their community garden plots. At their meeting on May 28th, they planned their garden plots using a square foot garden design. On June 11th they met to prepare their raised beds and begin planting. They planted tomatoes, lettuce, broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage, pole beans, cucumbers, celery, swiss chard, peppers, and a wide variety of herbs and flowers. The group met again on July 3rd to plant a 3rd garden plot for a community service project with the Humane Society. The group will be growing squash, eggplant, and decorative gourds for the Humane Society Harvest Dinner in the fall. The International Harvesters are currently busy caring for their gardens. Every couple of days a member of the group visits the garden plots to weed, water, and harvest any produce that may be ready. International Harvester members are able to take home any produce item grown in their garden. In doing so, they must then prepare something using the item taken and share with the group the recipe used. In the fall and winter the group hopes to compile a recipe book from everyone’s shared recipes!
TA’s Accepting New Members
Teen Council/ Teen Ambassadors
Are you 14 years or older and interested in helping promote 4-H within Yates County? If so, you should consider applying to be a Teen Ambassador. TAs serve as the teen leaders for the Yates County 4-H program. They help with county 4-H events, write 4-H articles for the papers, and attend community events to promote the 4-H program. TAs must fill out an application and go through an interview to join. If this sounds like something you might be interested in, contact Jen at the 4-H office.
A joint Teen Council and Teen Ambassador meeting was held on June 10th. Members met at the fairgrounds to decide on ice cream flavors for the dairy bar, discuss how much money to put towards Teen Council scholarships for 2014, and plan for upcoming community events to help promote 4-H. A 4-H Spirit award was also discussed to help increase 4-H membership (see above).

Bulletin Board Geo-Caching Day On Monday, July 28th, a dedicated group of 4-H’ers and parents decided to brave the weather in order to learn more about geo-caching. However, the weather wasn’t so cooperative. Due to the storm clouds above, it took a while for our units to establish a satellite connection. The group decided to stick out the weather in search of at least one cache, but after a couple hours of steady rain, the majority of the participants decided to call it a day. We did have three participants decide to participate a bit longer and we were able to locate 1 cache right on Main Street in Penn Yan. Overall, the day ended earlier than we would have liked. Therefore, we are hoping to schedule another geocaching workshop. There are MANY local cache sites in and around Penn Yan. If this sounds like something you’d like to participate in, please contact Jen.
Yates County 4-H Shooting Sports Club We currently have some interest in forming a 4-H shooting sports club in Yates County. The club would meet throughout the year to learn about shooting sports disciplines and work on shooting sports related projects. If this sounds like something you’re interested in, please contact Jen at the 4-H office.

End of Year and Re-Enrollment Information End of Year Reports Will be Due September 15th
All end of year reports are due by September 15 th. Each 4-H member needs to complete an end of year report to get credit for the 4-H year. There are separate end of year reports for 4-H members and traditional 4-H members. New this year, we will not be mailing end of year packets. All reports can be found on-line at http://counties.cce.cornell.edu/yates/4H/4hindex test.htm. Additional information about each form can also be found on this site. Please call the office if you have any questions. Failure to hand these papers in by this due date forfeits your opportunity to receive awards at Achievement Night and credit for the current 4-H year.
Enrollment Papers Are Due by January 1st In addition to 4-H end of year reports, we are also accepting enrollment forms for the 2014/2015 4-H year! This includes your enrollment, medical release, and code of conduct forms. While we prefer to receive re-enrollment forms in the fall (so we have current information updated in our enrollment database), they are DUE to the 4-H office by the end of the calendar year or else you will be removed from our enrollment and our 4-H mailing list. Late enrollments will be accepted with an additional fee prior to April 1st but all youth must be enrolled in 4-H by April 1st to enter a project(s) (animal or exhibit hall) in the fair. Enrollment fees paid after July 15th will be credited to the next 4-H year.
What is the difference between the Year End Forms and Enrollment Forms? Year end forms are the forms we use to credit 4-H members for the PREVIOUS year. These are the forms that must be turned in by September 15th so that we can do our data entry part in order to get our county information to New York State 4-H on time. These are the forms that must be turned in, ON TIME, in order to qualify the 4-H member for awards at Achievement Night – no exceptions. These forms include: 4-H Member’s Summary (including 4-H story) or Cloverbud Summary report (these are the MOST IMPORTANT), Achievement Night Awards (Steppingstones, Milestones, County Medals, Award Trips, Special Awards), Honor Club, Leader’s Club Summary Report, and Club Treasury/Financial Report. Enrollment forms, however, do not decide your eligibility for Achievement Night Awards. These are to enroll you for the NEXT year in 4-H. These can be submitted at anytime throughout the year but are due by January 1 st to get the normal enrollment fee rate or by April 1st with additional fee in order to enter exhibits at the fair.
Why 4-H Reporting is Important by the New York State 4-H Office Do you ever wonder why your county Cooperative Extension office asks you to submit reports – Secretaries Reports, End of the Year Reports, Enrollment Forms, etc etc…? Because Cooperative Extension is a program supported by federal, state, and local tax dollars, your county Cooperative Extension association is responsible for reporting information about the programs they do and the impacts they have on the communities in your county. Every fall your county Extension office submits an ES-237 report to the State 4-H Youth Development Office at Cornell University, and then the State 4-H Office compiles a state ES-237 report to send to the USDA in Washington DC by November 1st. The national Cooperative Extension System has only one way to systematically compile and take credit for the scope of its efforts in youth development - the ES-237 report. This is a critical part of telling the 4-H Youth Development story - who we are and what we do. Allan Smith, past National 4-H Program Leader, says, "the enrollment report is the principle way the 4-H program gets credit for what it is doing." According to Allan, "every year there are numerous Congressional inquiries for specific information, such as: youth involved in community service, trends in volunteer leadership, trends in subjects participants choose to study, etc." Federal agencies, such as the Departments of Interior and Education, the Environmental Protection Agency, and the Forest Service, monitor 4-H involvement in their subject matter and interest area. It is very challenging to count everything that goes on in a complex program like 4-H in order to get credit for the great 4-H programs in counties all across the state and to assess the impact on young people. That’s why your county office needs your help! It is important that you try to be as accurate and timely as you can be when you are asked to submit enrollment forms and other reports so your county office can follow through on the responsibility they have to provide information to the state level. Thanks for your help in telling the 4-H story in New York! 8

Upcoming Events Sewing Camp—August 18th—19th Summer is moving right along and the good news is that there is at least one more fun thing to do – Sewing Camp 2014. Take the cover off your sewing machine and sharpen your fabric scissors and sign up. This year’s camp will be on Monday, August 18th and Tuesday, August 19th from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Monday we will be in the Yates County auditorium and Tuesday we will take a field trip to O’Susannah’s Quilt Shop in Watkins Glen and the Watkins Glen State Park. Parent drivers may be needed for the field trip on Tuesday. Class size is limited to 10 campers. Parents and other care providers are invited to help their child (ren) with their sewing. The cost will be $40.00 for each 4-H member and $50.00 for nonmembers. Scholarship money is available through the 4-H office that can reduce the out of pocket expense so don’t let the cost keep you from joining in the fun while we “learn by doing”. The fee includes all activities for each day. Registration and fee are due by Monday, August 11th. Each participant is responsible for their own lunch, snacks and beverages. Projects for this year are a Quillow (a quilt that folds into a pillow) for Monday and a smaller project at the quilt shop on Tuesday morning. The Quillow will take a total of 4 ½ yards of fabric (2 yards for each side plus ½ fabric for the pillowcase, and a piece of quilt batting that is at least 46”x72”. It is a BIG project and will take most, if not all, the day to complete. There will be smaller projects for you to do if you have time. All supplies for the smaller projects will be furnished. A more detailed supply list will be sent when registration and the fee have been received by the 4-H office. Dawn is always excited to see what neat fabrics you select!
Teen Council/Teen Ambassadors Will Meet August 12 If you have not yet heard, we have combined our 4-H Teen Council and Teen Ambassador groups and so far it’s going quite well! As discussed at our last meeting, we will be holding an end of summer meeting to wish our graduating seniors well as they move on to the next steps in their lives. Our meeting will be August 12th from 6-7:30 pm at Mac’s Dairy Bar in Penn Yan. We will play mini golf and then hold a business meeting. The cost of mini golf will be paid for out of our club treasuries, however, please bring additional money if you would like to yourself and ice cream. We are always accepting new members for both Teen Council and Teen Ambassadors. If you are 13 years or older and interested in Community Service and having fun, please contact Jen at the 4-H office to sign up for Teen Council. Teen Ambassadors are also accepting applications from 4-H youth interested in helping to promote 4-H throughout the county. If you are 14 years or over and have been in 4-H for at least 3 years, you’re eligible to apply. Interested members should contact Jen can for an application. 9

Upcoming Events New York State Fair—August 21st—September 1st The Great New York State Fair will take place from August 21st – September 1st, 2014. Yates County will be well represented this year with 4-H youth participating in animal science shows and various other 4-H activities throughout the twelve days of the fair! In the Youth Building, Yates County shares booth space with Seneca and Wayne counties. Therefore, our State Fair exhibits will be on display for the entire duration of the fair! However, since our county rotation is from August 29th – September 1st, our exhibits won’t be judged until August 29th. Yates County is also looking for a group of motivated teens to help out in our county booth at state fair. If you enjoy meeting new people and trying new things, then the New York State Fair is just the place for you! Yates County will be headed to the State Fair for the 3rd rotation this year, leaving the office on Thursday, August 28th and returning on Monday, September 1st. We are looking for teens to help in the Yates County booth, greeting fair goers and helping youth do an interactive activity. You also have the opportunity to explore and stay overnight at the State Fair and participate in 4-H sponsored events each day. In addition, if you have completed Teen Leader Training, there are additional opportunites available to you at the NYS Fair! Check out the NYS Fair section of this issue of Dates for Yates for more information. If you’re interested in attending the NYS Fair as a teen, please reserve your spot in our booth by contacting Jen by August 15th.
4-H Parent and Leader Gathering We will be holding a 4-H Parent and Leader meeting in September. An e-mail survey will be sent in mid-August to determine the best day and time to meet, so please watch your e-mails! We will be discussing the Yates County Fair, 4-H Achievement Night, upcoming 4-H programming, and a fall fundraiser to benefit the Fair Face-Lift Fund.
September Workshop to Feature Food Preservation Fall is the perfect time to highlight food preservation! In September we will be highlighting the grape by making either grape juice, freezer jam/jelly, grape leather, or a combination of the above. There are a lot of things you can make with grapes and while preserving any type of food item, it’s important that you’re doing it safely and correctly. If this sounds like something you’re interested in, please contact Jen at the 4-H office! Once a date is determined, it will be announced through e-mail.

Upcoming Events Dundee Scottish Festival/Parade—September 6 On September 6th, Dundee will once again be holding their annual Scottish Festival. The day begins with a parade down Main Street Dundee. This year 4-H has been asked to be a part of the parade! If we get enough people interested we may be able to create a float for the parade! Please contact Jen if you’re interested in being a part of this event and helping promote 4-H in Dundee!
National 4-H Week—October 5th—11th 4-H members and leaders throughout the nation will be celebrating National 4-H Week, October 5th-11th, 2014. National 4-H Week is a great time to promote 4-H and positive youth development. 4-H leaders, parents, and members are encouraged to help spread the word about 4-H. How will you help? Here are a few ways you can be involved:
Wear a pin, t-shirt or any other 4-H apparel that you have. Do a service activity for your community. Send a summary of last year’s accomplishments to your local newspaper. Include photos, if you have them. Ask a local store if you can put a display of your projects in their window.
Window Display for National 4-H Week October 5th—11th, 2014 What exactly is a 4-H window display, you ask. Window displays are a great way to promote 4-H throughout the community. During National 4-H Week, we have a window display contest. We assemble a group of judges to evaluate each window display and announce the winner at Achievement Night. We are encouraging all 4-H clubs/families to partner with a local business and create a window display to help promote 4-H in Yates County. While displays don’t have to be judged, they should follow the following guidelines: Attract attention and encourage people to stop and look Have a theme/tell a story effectively and give facts clearly and quickly Tell a complete story of some phase of 4-H Convince the observer that 4-H is worthwhile and make youth want to join Simple, attractive signs easily read and appropriate Observers are referred to a source for more information Display is visible and accessible to the public Please contact Jen if you’re interested in creating a window display for National 4-H Week!

The 4-H Scrapbook 4-H Cooking Workshop On Monday, June 2nd, we held the Cooking Workshop in the County Auditorium Kitchen, which had been postponed from May 14th due to the flooding in our county. A group of four 4-H’ers who love to cook, prepared “Breakfast for Dinner” with buckwheat pancakes, omelet muffins, and a delicious veggie-filled frittata. Tasty, fun, and nutritious (of course!) recipes, for sure! Thanks for coming everyone - I’m looking forward to our next cooking workshop; be thinking of what foods we should try.

The 4-H Scrapbook Fishing Day st
Our August 1 Fishing Day was a success!! Eight members participated in the event, learning about the basics of fishing including; casting, fish identification, and of course, safety! After a bit of instruction at the 4-H office, the group headed to the boat launch in Penn Yan to practice casting. Then after a brief lunch break, they traveled to Dundee to Jen’s pond for some hands on fishing experience. Within just a few minutes the fish were being reeled in and it wasn’t long before everyone had caught a fish! After a while the group took a break to watch presenter, Al McGuffie, fillet two different kinds of fish. Then Barb cooked the fillets for everyone to taste. After our tasty treat, participants resumed fishing for a bit – until we ran out of worms! The group then packed up and headed to Penn Yan for more worms and a bit more fishing at the boat launch. Thanks to everyone who participated! Yates County 4-H has some talented new fishermen/women!

The 2014 Yates County Fair: A Rewarding Experience
THANK YOU! We have heard many comments that this year’s Yates County Fair was a positive experience for our 4-H members! From the perspective of 4-H staff members, there were many moments of this year’s fair that had us VERY proud of our 4-H members, parents, and volunteers. The success of this year’s fair started well before the event took place. From those that attended fair clean up and helped get our 4-H buildings and grounds ready for the fair, to our members and parents who spent a portion of their 4th of July holiday painting the dairy bar porch and 4-H judge’s stand - your helping hands set the stage for a positive fair week! This momentum continued throughout the entire week of fair. From the wonderful exhibits you brought to be judged in the Exhibit Hall to our many 4-H members and parents who stepped up throughout the week to not only help fellow exhibitors, but the 4-H program as a whole. We witnessed 4-H members and parents come together to create a safe riding arena for our 4-H’ers and their horses, help secure a safe stall for a turkey that got a bit misdirected in the animal science barn, help take care of unneeded equipment to get our buildings ready for the public, and take on additional shifts in the dairy bar and exhibit hall to ensure that everything continued to run smoothly throughout the week. As 4-H staff, we cannot say thank you enough to everyone that helped make this year’s fair a success! 20

The 2014 Yates County Fair: Exhibits A great big THANK YOU to everyone for all the effort put into the 175th Yates County Fair!!! Staff, judges, parents, grandparents, and youth helped the 4-H exhibit hall have many exciting and educational displays to share with the public. Everyone’s hard work throughout the 4-H year was evident and very appreciated. Best of Show in the exhibit hall went to Abby Santora and Amber Mason for their beautiful quilts! Thank you for the time and effort you put into your projects—many people coming through the hall were very impressed!

Yates County will share a booth with Seneca and Wayne Counties so our exhibits will be on display for the entire fair, from Thursday, August 21st, through Labor Day, Monday, September 1st. Exhibits sent for judging will most likely be judged Friday, August 29th, if you’re planning a trip to Syracuse to visit the fair and would like to see the judges’ results. A letter will be sent out soon to all 4-H’ers explaining what needs to be done to prepare your exhibit and necessary paperwork for projects to go to State Fair. 27
Yates County 4-H exhibits will be on display at the New York State Fair August 21st through September 1st. Yates County’s booth rotation will be August 29th—September 1st and judging will occur on August 29th.
Teen Leaders (13+) Every year, several teens have the opportunity to work as Teen Leaders at the New York State Fair. Besides having fun, participants will work with a large, diverse audience and meet 4-H’ers from across the state. If it sounds like something you’d be interested in, here is what you need to know:
You must have been at least 13 years on January 1, 2014 but no older than 19 on January 1, 2014 to be a Teen Leader.
The 4-H staff and/or volunteer parents will take you to the fair on Thursday, August 28th and return you to Yates County on Monday, September 1st.
Transportation to and from the fair and chaperones on dates other than those listed above are your responsibility.
The 4-H office will provide parking and gate admission passes for the driver and Teen Leaders.
During the overnight hours, you must stay in the dormitory of the Youth Building located on the fairgrounds.
Your commitment is firm. If you sign up to go to the fair as a Teen Leader, it is expected that you will be there.
It is recommended that you stay for all four days that Yates County is present. However, other arrangements can be made if necessary.
Most areas of teen leadership are based in the Youth Building. However, certain work may require your presence at other locations on the fairgrounds.
All teens will complete a brief orientation and training prior to working.
If you are staying in the youth building on dates other than August 28th—September 1st (for animal shows or other leadership positions), please let Jen know as you will need to be registered by a staff person.
If you are 13 or older and have NOT taken Teen Leader Training, you may work in the Yates County booth at the State Fair. If you have taken Teen Leader Training, you may work in any of the following areas:
4-H Press Corp, Clothing Revue and Modeling, Horse, Horticulture, Poultry and Avian Science, Teen Evaluator, Welcome Booth, Yates County Display Teen Leaders
Youth Building Junior Superintendent (16+) Youth Building Junior Superintendents (used to be called Teen Assistants) help with everything from swabbing the decks to preparing statistical analysis of exhibits. They have a very important role in making it all happen with fun, style, and grace. As such, it is extremely important that young people who serve in this capacity are responsible, emotionally balanced, and have a good sense of humor.

During these difficult financial times, publicly funded programs like Cornell Cooperative Extension face great challenges with budget cutbacks. Help us understand and communicate the value of 4-H to you and your child’s lives so we can share this with our County Legislators. Have you told your 4-H story yet? If not, please email Jen with your story
[email protected] If you know others who have benefited from 4-H and do not receive Dates For Yates, please encourage them to send in their stories as well!
