The 50th Street Audible

In football, an audible occurs when the quarterback comes to the line of scrimmage, surveys what’s happening on the field, and changes the play.

We think Jesus is calling an audible.

What if we told you that the building is located in northeast Edmonton, not far from our current Sunday location?

Future Location

It is located at 12235-50 St NW. It’s the building formerly known as Beverly Alliance Church (but it’s not in Beverly).

What if we told you that we would host other ethnic congregations in the building?

These congregations would lease the building from us and act as ministry partners.

What if we told you that this space would be more affordable than our other options? Here is the financial reality for this new facility: First, the facility costs would be slightly less than what we would pay for Klarvatten (this includes building maintenance). Second, we would have increased revenues from our ministry partners, who would lease the building from us. Third, this means that we will end up with $46,000 additional revenue each year, which can be used for ministry needs and human resources. A comparison budget can be found on the next page.

A couple of matters worth noting on the following page: The comparison does not reflect any ministry budget savings that will be realized when we no longer rent facilities for programs like Alpha, Youth, and Kids Kapers. Also, this budget does not take into account the previous church’s members who may be joining us. If they choose to become part of Crosspoint, they will likely help contribute financially.

We’ve tried to imagine some of the benefits and drawbacks of this new location Benefits •

Our gatherings, ministry programs, and offices can be in one location.

There is room for us to grow as a church.

There is space for our youth ministry to host ministry programs and events.

We will have less intensive set-up and take-down requirements.

The kitchen and fellowship hall can be used to host multiple ministries, including Alpha.

It will eliminate the need to ship materials and equipment between two separate sites and allow us to be creative in ways we previously could not.

Kids Kapers Camps can be hosted on location in the building, which is situated in neighbourhoods.

We can host weddings and funerals.

We will become more multi-ethnic, which reflects one of our core values.

The building can be used for meeting real needs in the community (e.g. ESL, or life -skills training in our kitchen)

Drawbacks •

It will take some initial elbow grease to freshen it up.

There is the risk of the building falling into disrepair in the future.

The location will be a farther drive for some (but closer for others).

It takes energy to care for a building including upkeep.

Managing and leasing a building takes time and energy.

There is always a danger of losing sight of the mission when you own a building.

We would not have the connections with the other tenants in Klarvatten— although we would make new connections.

We need to make a decision about this soon. We would like you to join us after the gathering,

on March 25, for a Congregational Meeting. Why are we making the decision so soon? We understand that this is a short time-frame for making this decision. This opportunity was made available to us in late February, but we could not present it to our congregation until now. At the time of the offer from the District, the Lead Team prayed and then agreed to put our building project with Klarvatten on hold until our congregation could decide on this new opportunity. We have not cancelled the Klarvatten build, and will not make that final determination without our congregation’s decision. However, in respect of the owner of Klarvatten, we need to decide sooner rather than later. We didn’t want to wait until after Easter to make this decision because people’s weekend calendars would begin to change with the warmer weather. Plus, we didn’t feel that Easter would be a good Sunday to have a congregational meeting.

How did the property become available? The previous church that occupied the building, Beverly Alliance Church, has experienced decline over the years. This past year the aging membership came to terms with the reality that they were continuing to diminish and that the keeping building was no longer financially sustainable. The membership has been dissolved and the building turned over to the Western Canadian District of the C&MA.

Why have we waited until now to present this to our congregation? In order to honour the previous congregation, and because of due process required from our District, we could not present this to Crosspoint until the Beverly membership voted to dissolve on March 18, 2018. We want to honour the people and the process.

We’re pretty certain you have lots of questions. Here are our best answers to date. What will happen to the previous congregation? The previous congregation will be welcomed, with arms open wide, to become part of Crosspoint. We will continue to honour the legacy of Beverly Alliance Church and will work at helping those who are interested in joining us, at getting connected into community. Each of us will have a part to play in this! This is not a merger of two congregations. The church property and assets will be given to Crosspoint and the previous church will no longer exist as a corporate entity. Crosspoint will continue to press forward into the future and keep its mission, vision, values, ministries, and unique style – but in a new location. We believe that, by God’s grace, Crosspoint will continue to fulfill the hopes and aspirations of the original founders of Beverly.

How will this affect our mission in NE Edmonton? Our mission in NE Edmonton was never localized in a specific neighbourhood. This was nearly impossible to do because we did not own property and therefore did not have a specific geographic footprint.

Most of our ministries were regionalized. Kids Kapers campers come from various neighbourhoods throughout NE Edmonton, as do the students in our youth ministry. Moving into this location will simply expand our region of impact. It will also give us some specific local neighbourhoods to love and serve. Our immediate goal will be to move into the building, and set up a strong base of operations. From there, we will look beyond into the neighbourhoods to see what good we can do.

What will happen with Klarvatten and its owner? If our congregation decides to move to the 50th Street location, we will cancel our building project with the builder and will pay them for services rendered. We have not signed a lease agreement with the owner yet, but we believe that it is important that we provide him with some remuneration for holding the space for us. We have been in correspondence with the owner and his gracious response was, “whatever is God’s will for our building and where the church will be, his will be done.”

What about the other congregations that meet in the building? These congregations (with the exception of one) are sister congregations in our own denomination. We will lease the building to each of them for a monthly fee. We may also partner with them on some projects and events. We look forward to praying with them and learning from them.

What about our other lease agreements? Our lease with NGLSRC is negotiated monthly. Our lease on the Ministry Centre is also flexible. There is a high likelihood that it will be sold within the next two months.

Will this change Crosspoint? Inevitably, we will seek to change and improve how we make disciples and reach the lost. Since the day we planted Crosspoint, we declared that we would only have a building if it made sense of the mission, but that we would never want the building to become the mission. By God’s grace, this will be our posture with this property. The building is not the mission. Making disciples is the mission. Reaching the lost is the mission. Bringing glory to Christ is the mission. The building is only a tool to help accomplish God’s mission. For the first year that we are in the building, you will probably hear about some opportunities to do help fix up the building. These will be necessary to get the building ready to be used for kingdom work. But don’t let these announcements lead you to believe that we’ve drifted from the mission. Our hearts are fixed on God’s mission.

What about our partnership with Teen Time Camp? Teen Time will be coming with us and we will be setting aside some space for them.

What about those who pledged toward the Klarvatten build? We will contact each household personally, and ask if they will consider transferring their pledge to this new project. We believe this is a better investment. On the one hand, Crosspoint will be the owners of this property, rather than renters. On the other hand, this facility will better equip us to accomplish Christ’s mission when compared to the Klarvatten option.

When can we visit the building? If our congregation decides in favour of the 50th Street property, we hope to do some prayer tours in April. If you sign up to help us move, clean, or renovate, you’ll get a real first-hand experience of the place sooner than that!

When we will move? We are planning to move in stages, throughout April, once we complete some renovations.

We hope to host our first Sunday gathering in the new space on May 6th.

Throughout the Klarvatten project campaign, we had prayed, “Jesus, we are open to whatever you have for us.” We believe that God, who is able to do increasingly, immeasurably, more than we could ever ask or imagine, has called us to something that surpasses our bite-sized dreams.

When we step out in faith, mustard seeds move mountains. Join with us at the Congregational Meeting on March 25. We will make this decision together, in community. In the meantime, pray, give thanks, and ask questions!
