WICKLIFFE- Several families came out to Family Fun Archaeology Day at Wickliffe Mounds State Historic Site this past Saturday as part of “National Get Outdoors Day”. They spent the day learning about Native American life via hands-on activities and playing games. Visitors were able to try their hand at using an Atlatl, which is tool used to increase the distance one can throw a spear. Chris Hildebrand gave demonstrations on how

the Indians would have used the tool long ago. Boy scout Tahm Thawainin with troop 3 out of Murray also assisted with Atlatl instruction. In addition to using an Atlatl, visitors were able to test their blowgun shooting abilities as Lauren Wells instructed them on the best way to aim and shoot at a rabbit or squirrel. Ballard County residents Savannah Pigg, Ethan Pigg, and Chrissy Jones were among those testing their blowgun skills.

Children and parents alike were able to sit in the shade and learn how to make pottery at the guidance of volunteer Fain Russell. Lee Jackson aka “Flint Knapper” demonstrated “flint knapping”, which is the making of flaked or chipped stone tools. This technology was used to make spears, dart points, and arrowheads. Wickliffe considers Fire Department move to old school by Kelly Paul Editor, Advance Yeoman

WICKLIFFE-After discussing the appointment of Terry Hatton as new City Fire Chief, commissioners consider options pertaining to moving the fire department to a new location. During the recent meeting of the Wickliffe City Council, Mayor Lynn Hopkins announced Terry Hatton has been appointed the new Wickliffe Fire Chief. The mayor then expressed his interest in moving the Fire Department to the old school building, which consists of 25,000 square feet. The Fire Department would occupy the Cafeteria section of the building. Once the fire department is moved to the school, the current fire department building can be dedicated to the Ambulance and the rescue boat, although the mayor said he still wasn’t sure whether the rescue boat would stay at the current fire station or be lodged down by the Economy Boat Store. Part of the issue is that both Economy Boat Store and James Marine Inc., have in their plans the need for a rescue situation as a water agency. Mayor Hopkins also said he was going to designate someone on the Wickliffe Fire Department to EMS so as to have that individual able to work with the emergency boat and be able to hook up a truck to the boat in Wickliffe. The city warehouse will also be located at the school, which will include 10,000 square feet. City Superintendent Guy Johnson’s operations will be at the school site. Everything that is located at the current warehouse will be moved to the central location at the school. Zito Media would also be relocated there. The empty warehouse could then be leased; Economy Boat Store has expressed an interest in it. In relation to this, the council discussed its property lease with Economy Boat that is effective until

2020 because another entity expressed an interest in the metal building as well as the rest of the property. “We all want a reasonable and fair lease,” said Hopkins. He also said, “We don’t want to forget they are providing jobs in Wickliffe.” Mayor Hopkins is also considering using the library at he old school as a community room. In addition to this, he would like to see a soccer field or t-ball field at the old school. “If we can do some of that for the community, and then make some money and help us get out of that metal warehouse—that’s a positive thing,” said Hopkins. The Sheriff’s department included discussion about the city’s contract with the Sheriff’s department. Mayor Hopkins expressed concern over what the city was receiving for the amount they paid. “We never knew exactly what we’re getting for this,” said Hopkins. As per Sheriff Todd Cooper, the amount per month has been reduced from $2,300 to $1,800. “If there was a price break, and If we’re getting our money’s worth, I’m not opposed to that,” said Hopkins. The council unanimously approved the contract. In addition to discussing the total thefts, burglaries, and traffic

citations, Sheriff Cooper suggested the city adopt a Golf Cart ordinance to allow golf carts to be driven on city streets. Discussion was also made regarding the new stop signs. “I think putting stop signs up will be a part of life in Wickliffe,” said Hopkins. Mark Davis with the Purchase Area Development District (PADD) gave a brief update regarding the need for the Kentucky Transportation Department approval before the committee, made up of current council members, can meet with Civil Design Group regarding the Fort Jefferson Project. In other city business, Maintenance Supervisor Guy Johnson discussed need for Lagoon improvements. He also said some sewer lines were in bad shape. Councilwoman Cathy Hurt discussed Main Street. Grant money is available to acquire sixteen lights to be leased per month. The council approved spending the $345 a month provided they are allowed to use the grant money. In other business required council approval, the lease for the warehouse used by New Page has been extended until 2015. The City has agreed a lot with the Michael Laster, the owner of Indian Hills. The city has also agreed to accept the deed for a lot owned by Paul
