The Anchor Line Grace Episcopal Church, Panama City Beach, Florida

June, 2015

Dear parishioners and friends of Grace Church: We had a glorious celebration of the coming of the Holy Spirit at Pentecost on May 24th. At the 10:30 service that morning the various petitions of the intercessory Prayers of the People were read in different languages by individual parishioners, to symbolize the outpouring of the Spirit on the first Pentecost that enabled the disciples to be understood by the people from every nation who were present in Jerusalem that day. The languages used this year, in addition to English, were German, French, Spanish, Arabic, and Latin. Also that day, the liturgical use of incense was restored to Grace Church after an absence of more than a decade; and with no ill effects! Of course, I am grateful to the altar servers, the prayer readers, and our organist Liz and her choir, that through their careful preparation everything was carried out with the appropriate reverence and dignity. Dave and Sayre Steere and I attended the regional farewell for Bishop and Cathy Duncan which took place on Wednesday, May 27th at Holy Nativity in Panama City. It was a very nice function with a service (which I couldn’t attend) and a festive party on the church grounds afterward (which I did attend). I could not attend the service because of our own schedule here on Wednesday; I don’t like to change our usual schedule of services because there are often visitors to our beaches who want to be able to count on our services being offered when we say we’re going to do it. And on the same night of the goings-on in town, Wednesday, we welcomed the youth group from Saint Elisabeth’s Church in Memphis who were down here for a week-long visit to the beach. Fifteen young people accompanied by their youth director and three other adult chaperones. They came to the service on Wednesday, but since we had to clear-out and get going to Holy Nativity, the youth and their leaders went to have dinner at Schooner’s at the beach, and were seated at really good and large table secured for them by Jud Colley. They came back by arrangement on Thursday to help with our Supper at Grace and they were a big help and it was good for them. And afterward they joined the rest of the workers who customarily that night eat the scraps that fall from the master’s table for their own supper, but this was augmented by lots of fried chicken and sides from Popeye’s in town thanks to Carey Scott and a nice supply of some soft drinks and desserts provided by our John and Willie Ketter. The consecration of our Bishop-elect, Father Russell Kendrick, will take place at a Mass at 2 P.M. on Saturday, January 25th, at the Mobile Convention Center, followed

by a reception at our Christ Church Cathedral nearby. There will be other associated festivities and events that weekend for all, with blocks of hotel rooms in downtown Mobile set apart at special rates for those who would like to stay over. If you are interested in attending this important event in the life of our diocese please speak to me or Dawn: we have all the information here at the Parish Office. And since it is June: remember that when you go on vacation, God does not take a vacation from you. Be sure to worship God every Sunday in his Church—mindful that our God never asks us to do what is really impossible. Since just about all of us have Internet access nowadays, and almost all of our churches have their service times and locations available online, finding an Episcopal Church wherever you might be on a Sunday should not be a problem. If you have time, stay for refreshments following the service. As I like to say, visitors who have made the effort to be there are especially a shot in the arm for the faithful members of our smaller churches. And if you have a few minutes, there is always somebody who can give you a little tour and tell you a little history about the place. For that matter, let me know where you are headed, and I might have a colleague in the area for you to greet for me, or there might be a church of historical or architectural significance for you to see. And remember to bring home the church’s bulletins or newsletters for me: it’s not that I ask for this to check-up on you, but I like to read them and sometimes I can find something that worked for them that might work for us! And while we’re on the subject, last fall when I was up visiting friends at Lake Martin, my host asked: “The Sunday collection is pretty much just symbolic nowadays, right?” At first I misunderstood, and so I asked him to clarify. What he meant was that nowadays I probably found that most people sent their contributions in the mail, or gave online. And have you noticed that you now have the opportunity to give online when you visit our Grace Church website? We did not have that option back then, but I could reply that I was aware of some of our people sending their offerings in the mail. But I have been curious about the proportion, and so I inquired about it at our vestry meeting the other night. It seems like about 85% or our giving does come in through the offering plate on Sunday mornings. And so what I’ve said before is really true: “The treasurer can have a cooler summer if we pay our pledges before going on vacation!”

Sincerely,

Join us for our MidMid-Week service on Wednesdays beginning at 5:45 pm with the Holy Communion followed by a potpot-luck supper. supper. Please bring a dish to share, and your beverage beverage of choice.

They worshiped with us at the midweek service on Wednesday and they returned on Thursday to help with our Supper at Grace Ministry. Afterward they stayed and had supper with us. Our parishioners Carey Scott provided Popeye's fried chicken and sides to help feed them; John and Willie Ketter and Jan Hill kindly made some desserts and provided soft drinks for the group.
