THE BEACH SCENE W/AGAN AND NATE We aren’t locals but we did catch a few local joints while we were down in jax beach in late February. Our hotel is within walking distance to the main bars at the beach (Freebird Live, Ocean Club, etc…) This will be your guide to the clubs we noticed and some restaurants that seemed pretty legit.(Ladies, you can click on the “What Women Want” Icon to find a guide catered just for you—well we tried to cater it to you) So sit back listen to some Pandora and enjoy your planning for The Crescent 2010. CAUTION: We only advise people who are 21 yrs and older to look at the Drink Specials and drink in moderation. You are a representative of Delta Tau Delta fraternity and Georgia Southern University… $‐Cover charge guarantee Phillys Finest:
The Good: This place is straight from Pennsylvania and that can be good and bad if you know what we mean (Lucci need we say more…) this place does have ten 50 inch plasma’s. Seriously, if you want to get a taste of a good Philly cheese steak then hit this place up. Cheesesteaks and Hoagies are under $8. The coolest place about this restaurant is their ice bar… they literally have an ice rail going all the way across the bar so that your alcoholic beverage is always cold. They do have daily drink specials but we don’t know what they are… The Bad: This place is die‐hard Philly; they have all the Pro teams from Philly on so it could be hard to be at this place when the sun goes down. Also this bar is very small, so this is not the place for a big group to hang out at.
Sneakers: The Good: This is the perfect place for the sports fan; it has 6 big screen screens and 5 plasma’s. This bar and grille also has an arcade for the people that are still a kid at heart. There happy hour is not the typical Statesboro one… on Saturday’s it is from 12am til close. Also, their food is not priced bad at all, you can get a burger or sandwich for around $10 The Bad: This place is a mix between a bar and family environment so if you want to get the full bar effect then I would suggest go somewhere else on Beach Blvd. The Drink Specials (For those 21 yrs old and up): All Day Everyday… $2 Miller Lite 10 oz draft ‐ $5 Miller Lite 48 oz Pitcher ‐ $10 Bucker of 5 Budweiser, bud light, or bud select Ocean Club: $
The Good: Just look at the drink special on Friday and that really should tell you… This place is Rudy’s mixed with a little of Retrievers; it has a lot of dancing with a DJ in one room but also has bands playing in their room called the “Liquor Store.” The atmosphere is 21 years and older because those are the only ones who are let in, except for Thursday nights. This place is definitely good for a group of people because of the atmosphere and the square footage of the club. Ocean club is opened all weekend until 2 am, its opens at 4pm on Fridays and 7pm on Saturdays.
The Bad: Well this club like so many bars are for 21 and up unless you come down here on Thursday night which is college night where they let 18 yrs olds and up in (But our academics chair strongly advises us not to if you have Friday classes). Also, this place really doesn’t have a dress code so there is no telling what types of social groups come here. Drink Specials: Fridays: All you can drink $5 for Ladies and $10 for Guys (this only includes well cocktails and domestic beer drafts) Saturdays: $12 Premium Cocktail Pitchers, $3 Smirnoff flavors, and $2 Miller Lite Drafts Free Bird Café: $ http://www.freebirdlive.com/ Good: People 21 years and UNDER can get in BUT you have to be 21 yrs and older to go UPSTAIRS and on the BALCONY…This place does have a great venue for Live music and the upper balcony is inside overlooking the stage… it also has a outside balcony for those who like that Statesboro bar feel. Bad: This place can get crowded in a hurry, especially when there is live music since this 2 story venue has a maximum capacity of 700 people. Also, ladies you cannot bring purses inside and everyone is subject to a security pat down. Expensive cover on Saturday for this bar… Keller Williams is performing and it cost $20 to get in. Judge for yourself to see if he is worth that type of money (He is a one man band which seems cool) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PAI3QgssxKA) Drink Special: They did not say what the specials were at this place. European Street Café:
The Good: This place reminds us both of Europe when we studied abroad in the summer of 2008. This place has an awesome happy hour and a selection of wines, 20 draft beers and over 150+ bottled beers. The café is for the person who enjoys tasting different beers and wines. Also, you can purchase any beer and wine that they serve from the European Street Café store inside. They have a selection of over 100
sandwiches. The staff is also very helpful and knowledgeable about the beers and wines they serve and can match a great alcoholic beverage with your preferences. The Bad: The only problem with this place may be the distance. People who want to go will have to drive about 5 minutes to get there. Also, the price per beer may be too high for some people ($3.75). Remember this place is for people that can drink in moderation and not get smashed. Drink Specials: Every day from 2‐7 pm is 2 for 1 Happy Hour on All Draft Beers, $1 off each wine glass and $2 off each wine bottle. On SATURDAYS the same Happy Hour stated above is from 10AM til 7pm and everyday you can purchase 2 wines bottles for $11.95 Ragtime Tavern:
The Good: Ragtime Tavern was voted one of “The Top 200” restaurants in Florida by Florida Trend Magazine. This place has great seafood and is a local micro‐brewery that currently has 5 brewed beers. This is a great place to eat for lunch or dinner. On some nights it has live music in the “Tap Room.” The Bad: This place is a longer drive than European Street Café. It will take you around 10 minutes to get to this restaurant, which is located in Town Center. Drink Specials: They have a happy hour but do not post the specials for it. Landshark Café:
The Good: This place is a great place for anyone to get a cheap lunch. Once you get your food, it’s really good (Especially if you like seafood). The bar has a stage in the front, a full service bar on the far right side and plasmas all around the venue. We really don’t know what type of nightlife this bar has but from our judgment, it’s a very local bar.
The Bad: When we went, this café only had one chef so it took about an hour for us to get our food. That was the only bad part about their service (They did take 20% off our ticket). Also, it’s a 5 minute drive. Drink Specials: This place does have drink specials all day everyday but it changes weekly. This is just a portion of what the local beach scene has to offer. Obviously we did not have time to research and experience every place we just mentioned so please experience some of these places and make your own judgments. ‐
