Division I Graduation Rate Continues Upward Trend Division I student-athletes continue to perform well in the classroom, and more of them are graduating from college, according to the latest NCAA Graduation Success Rate (GSR) report. From 1995-2000, the GSR increased in many sports, including men’s basketball, football and baseball, and women’s basketball, softball and volleyball. In men’s basketball, the GSR jumped nearly 8 percent. NCAA President Myles Brand saw the report as great news, adding that the increased GSR’s have led to 850 more student-athletes from the entering class of 200 earning their degrees than did the 1995 cohort. Brand attributed some of the success to the NCAA academic-reform movement, which began is 2003 with increased initial eligibility and progress-toward-degree standards. “So in many ways,” Brand said, “these numbers give us a good base, but even so, we’ve seen in this period some effect of our academic reform, and it has been positive.” The NCAA developed the Graduation Success Rate (GSR) three years ago to more accurately assess the long-term student-athlete academic success. The GSR differs from the federally mandated graduation-rate methodology in that it counts transfers into and out of an institution. Data shows that the GSR includes 36 percent more student-athletes that the federal graduation rate. The NCAA continues to provide the federal rate, though, since there is no comparable rate to the GSR for the general student body. The latest GSR figures show that 77 percent of student-athletes who began college from 1997-2000 graduated within six years. That four-class average is unchanged from last year’s data and up from 76 percent two years ago. A closer look at the GSR data shows that the GSR rose from 67.6 percent for male student-athletes who began college in 1995 to 71.5 percent for those who started their studies in 2000. The GSR for women rose from 84.9 percent to 87.3 percent from 1995 to 2000. Brand, who last year said he wanted Division I to achieve an 80 percent GSR in the future, remains confident that the mark is attainable. “It is reachable, especially when considering how our academic reforms will affect future cohorts,” Brand said. “Our Academic Progress Rate (APR) has caused institutions to redouble their efforts to ensure that student-athletes succeed in the classroom and ultimately earn their college degree.”

“ALWAYS ASK FIRST”
Scouting of Opponents In sports other than Basketball, Football, and Women’s Volleyball it is permissible for a coach to scout future opponents at any time. However, UAB may not pay or reimburse a coach for expenses incurred while scouting. Coaches who receive expenses from UAB to recruit a prospect or in conjunction with team travel may not scout a future opponent. It is permissible, however, for a coach to receive expenses from UAB to attend a regular season or postseason tournament in which UAB’s team is a participant. Under such circumstances, the coach may scout future tournament opponents also participating in the same tournament at the same site.

Rules Reminder!! NCAA INTERPRETATIONUNLIMITED TELEPHONE CALLS DURING PORTION OF WEEK In general, coaches may contact a senior prospect via telephone once per week (with the exception of Men’s Basketball who may call a senior prospect twice per week). During those times in which a coach may make unlimited calls to a prospect (i.e., official visit exception, NLI signing date exception, off-campus contact exception), it is permissible for a coach to make an additional telephone call to the prospect during the remaining portion of that week (Sunday through Saturday). Official Interp. 3/3/94
A signed National Letter of Intent (NLI) binds a prospective studentathlete to UAB, not the coach or team.
Hot Topic-Personal Webpage's (e.g., MySpace and Facebook) Over the last few years, there has been an increase in the popularity of personal websites such as MySpace.com and Facebook.com. The question then arises if it is permissible for members of a coaching staff or athletic department staff member to have a MySpace or Facebook page or any personal website for that matter.
It is permissible for a coach or staff member to have an account, but there are certain guidelines that must be followed. There CANNOT be any pictures/comments from prospective student-athletes that appear on a personal web page. Conference USA has strongly recommended that coaches do not allow prospective or current student-athletes to become
