THE COACH AT SC

ATHLETICS AT SC We believe the principles and lessons learned in the classroom, church and home can be put into practice through athletics. A microcosm of society, athletics allow the student to develop and use his or her God given abilities. Because the arena of competition is usually surrounded with pressure the athlete is tested and true character revealed. Consequently, the opportunity for growth readily presents itself through athletic competition.

Because of our commitment to excellence coaches become one of the most significant components of any successful athletic program. Coaches have the responsibility to model proper attitudes, behaviors and desires while under pressure themselves. They are teachers and participants at the same time. One of the coach’s most pivotal roles is to work with the athlete whose character, revealed under pressure, needs to improve and get better. Coaches must be thoroughly knowledgeable in their sport, capable of detailed preparation, able to motivate athletes, able to make adjustments during competition, and can actively give meaning to each situation a team or individual may face.

THE ATHLETE AT SC Athletes at SCS should be diligent in preparation, relentless in effort, disciplined in nature, respectful in actions, self controlled in words, humble in spirit, and aggressive in the pursuit of excellence without regard to score, opponent, time, referee, etc. As athletes display these characteristics, good things usually happen; teams are successful, players are motivated, fans are supportive and enthusiastic, parents are proud, prospective athletes want to participate and the athlete becomes an effective role model to younger students.

“A chord of three strands is not easily broken” Ecclesiastes 4: 12

“It’s about the journey– mine and yours– and the lives we touch, the legacy we can leave, and the world we can change for the better.” Tony Dungee

OUR COMMITMENT TO EXCELLENCE

COMPETITIVE TO REACH OUR GOD GIVEN POTENTIAL

When we do things with precision, beauty and grandeur we make an invisible God visible showing His precision, beauty and grandeur. With that we want to be more than excellent on the field of competition but excellent in all things, including excellent in service and grace. Our philosophy can best be summed up by the phrase "doing our best as we strive to be the best”. We believe as Christians we are commanded by Scripture always to do our best. As believers we are not to waste the talent God has given us by giving anything less than total commitment through participation and maximum effort. We also believe we should strive to be the best at what we do. Being the best at anything, whether it is a National Merit Scholar or a state champion in any sport is a worthy and admirable goal of any Christian. Being the best may not always be the result of our athletic program, however doing our best must be!

Winning is a measure of success but it is not the only measure of success nor is it the most . We want to be competitive, to strive to be the best we can be to reach our maximum God given abilities. Success should never be measured by what you are but what you are Inspired to be. A person may appear successful when compared to others but a true evaluation of our success must be measured by our potential. Most in this country are not even trying. They find it easier to accept the hardships of failure than to make the sacrifices that lead to success. We want our teams to be competitive to put our children under pressure in order to challenge them to meet their true potential, to reveal character and create the potential for mental, physical and spiritual growth.

IT’S NOT ABOUT ME….. SERVICE TO OTHERS We are completely convinced that the only thing that truly lasts in this lifetime is what you do for others out of a pure heart and love for Jesus Christ. Athletics presents this value better than most for high school students. Because a high school students’ participation in athletics often allows us to teach the values of team, school, church, community and being part of something bigger than yourself, athletics should be viewed as a crucible for developing Christian character. When our athletes show the love of Christ to their teammates, classmates, and even opponents they draw others to the love of Christ. Athletics at SCS is designed to help students foster a pattern of how to approach difficult tasks, major challenges, and intense pressure while maintaining the fundamental Christian value that the entire process is “not about me” but about glorifying God and representing Christ to a lost world.
