February 2014 Carolyn Beranek, Senior Warden David Adams, Junior Warden

P. O. Box 334, Laurinburg, NC – (910) 276-1757 – [email protected] Words from the Senior Warden We received our year-end financial statement from our treasurer at our last Vestry meeting and our income exceeded our expenses. Careful conservation of our resources by Vickie Stribling, our Secretary, David Adams, our Junior Warden, Deb Bridges, our organist and the Vestry have paid off. But we don’t want to rest on our finances. We will be shifting some of the funds to go into the Diocesan money market funds (which have a very good rate of return) and looking into CD’s to maximize the interest rates. We intend to continue our setting aside of some funds so we can grow our “Priest” fund. If you remember, the Vestry has set a long term goal of having $127,000.00 set aside in order to search for our own part time priest. The reason that figure is so high is that the Diocese wants to be sure that a parish can pay for a priest for at least a couple of years after they move into a parish. It would be bad practice to move a priest into a parish and then not have enough funds to pay for them to remain there for a couple of years. We fully expect a “priest of our own” to grow the church. But in the meantime, with the help of our parish, we are actively pursuing our goal. Committed church members, putting their money where their hearts are, will achieve our goal. Thank you for listening to your heart. Please continue to pray for St. David’s, for its members and for its leaders. Pray also for clarity of vision and strength in mission. Carolyn Beranek Senior Warden

if it was the smell of the leeks, or the fierceness of the Welsh that turned the tide and gave the victory to the band from Wales. So we applaud their loyalty and convictions to protect their homeland and churches, and remember them with some ”leeky” casseroles, soups, and entrees. Feel free to dress appropriately too!

Church Community Services This agency helps distribute food to the needy, clothing and furniture to the burned- out, and payment for utilities and medicine for those on limited budgets at the end of a long month. Many churches in Laurinburg contribute to keep the office open. There is a governing board, which invites all member churches to send a representative to act as a liaison between the agency and the supporting church. Weston Cook has been a member for many years, and has rotated off the board. We are now looking for another parishioner to attend the monthly board meetings and bring us word of the services and needs of the community. Is that person you? Please contact Weston Cook with any questions and/or to offer your name as our representative.

Patronal Feast Day We seldom get to celebrate our patron saint, St. David, because too often his day arrives in Lent. But 2014 is different, His day arrives before Lent and we can pull out the stops. We will be singing some Welsh tunes (in English), singing our St. David’s song, and eating festive foods (with and without leeks in them). St. David of Wales was the one who assembled an army against the English in Wales and drove them out because the Welsh could tell between friend and foe. The method they used to discriminate between friend and foe was that St. David’s army had leeks in their helmets. Who knows

Doni Holloway selected as a Disney Dreamer! In the latter part of 2013, I applied and wrote an essay to compete for the coveted opportunity to attend the 2014 Disney Dreamers Academy hosted in partnership by Disney, Steve Harvey, and ESSENCE Magazine. The results are in! I received confirmation that I was SELECTED to attend the 2014 Disney Dreamers Academy as one of the top 100 “dreamers” from over 10,000 applications nationwide! As a Disney Dreamer, I’ll travel on an all-expensepaid trip to Walt Disney World to attend Disney’s seventh annual flagship Dreamers Academy in March for a week filled with networking, mentoring, immersive career development, exploration of Disney theme parks, empowerment, and stellar one-on-one inspiration with Steve Harvey and dozens of other media figures, journalists, actors/actresses, CEOs, and executives. I am so exhilarated for the opportunity to meet and learn from many of my role models. I'm also excited to meet other like-minded young Dreamers from across the country. The ultimate objective of the program is to provide selected outstanding youth the tools to “achieve our greatest dreams.” Being informed that I was selected feels surreal. I’m incredibly humbled to accept my spot in the 2014 class. . Realizing the magnitude of this honor and the fact that I was invited to be one of the top ONE HUNDRED teens selected from over ten thousand applications nationwide reinforces my belief that with tremendous hard work and faith, ANYTHING is possible. Thanks to my St. David's family for all of your continued support and encouragement. Doni Holloway

Lunatic Society Meeting The Lunatic Society Meeting will be held on February 22. The theme for the evening is “Crazy Customs.” We have another collective poem started with the line, "I was seduced by the Cape Cod grey..." Please email your poem additions to [email protected]. Look forward to an evening full of poetry, art, and laughter! The meeting starts with a potluck so bring a dish to share. Bonnie Glenn

Episcopal Church Trivia Pancakes are associated with Shrove Tuesday since they are a way to clean the pantry of rich foods such as milk, sugar, and eggs before the fasting of Lent begins. Shrove Tuesday is also called “Pancake Day” in Australia, Canada, New Zealand, and the United Kingdom.
