County. It takes from two to three years to grow the oysters to an edible size. He stays active in the Washington, D.C. area AGR Alumni Chapter along with Iota brothers Bob Miller and Lee Van Wyken, and credits AGR with lifelong bonds and association with other brothers from other chapters throughout the country. Ernest A. Kooistra #703 of Sharon, Wis. passed away October 21, 2011. He attended UW-Madison where he earned a Bachelor of Science in Dairy Science. Ernie worked for Hawthorn Mellody Dairy of Whitewater and Dean Foods of Huntley, Ill. for over 30 years and enjoyed three years of retirement. Roberto Marcel #1411 lives in Ecuador managing his family dairy operation. After graduating from UW-Madison in 2003, he worked for a milk processing plant, Pasteurizadora Quito, giving technical support to the farmers who supplied the milk. After that he travelled to Argentina for 9 months doing a course on dairy cattle nutrition at the INTA Institute in Buenos Aires Province. Then returning to Ecuador, he worked as a tourist guide for a small English company doing packing trips on horseback into the mountains. He also operates a small endurance horse-training center where he trains horses to run long distance races - up to 100 miles in a day. This is a new discipline in Ecuador and he hopes to have some horses competing in international races in 2012. Recently he was in Chile at the Pan-American Endurance Championship to learn more about the sport. The U.S. team was there and did very well. Roberto was married a year ago so his life is very busy. He hopes to attend World Dairy Expo next year and will be in touch with his Iota brothers beforehand if he does. Roberto would enjoy hearing from his Iota Brothers. His address is: Roberto Marcel, Via Interoceanica Km. 10 1/2, Edificio Espacia, Of. 212, Cumbaya, Ecuador. His email is [email protected]. Todd Schaumberg #1423 and Keely (Katch) Schaumberg of Wrightstown, Wis. announced the birth of their new baby daughter, Isabella Marie on September 1, 2011. Tony Brey #1429 and Moriah (Morris) Brey announced the birth of their first son, Evan Anthony Brey on November 20, 2011. Evan has quite an AGR family tree as both his grandfathers Tom Morris and Bill Brey are (UW-River Falls) AGR alumni. Evan also has three uncles that are Iota AGRs - Jacob Brey, Mark Ulness, and Adam Morris (who ironically was Tony’s little brother at Iota Chapter). The family tree goes even farther with Moriah’s uncles George Morris and Glen Morris who were Iota AGRs as well; therefore being an AGR may be in Evan’s future. Patrick Kusilek #1466 and Amy Woods were married on August 19th in Coos Bay, Ore. Patrick is a herdsman at a 800-cow dairy and also working at the home farm in Baldwin, Wis. Amy is currently attending the University of Minnesota to become a dental hygienist. Ryan Adams #1476 and Ashley Wedige announced their engagement and their wedding in Delavan, Wis. on January 12, 2012. Ryan is in UW-Graduate School, studying physical therapy. Mason Amundson #1485 and Laura Rortvedt announced their engagement and their wedding in Plymouth, Wis. on November 3, Continued on page 3

Iota Corporation Board Plans for the Future

Iota AGRs at the Rose Bowl January 2, 2012

The Iota AGR Alumni Corporation needs to build capital reserves for our Iota Chapter House replacement items and future renovations in order to maintain a first class chapter house on the UW campus. During the recent December 2012 Corporation Board / Finance & Facility Committee meeting a financial plan was outlined and approved by the Corporation Board.

Several Iota alumni were able to make the trip out to Pasadena for another Badger bowl appearance. Even though Bucky was unable to come away with a victory, a great time was had by all in the California sunshine.

Corporation Board Financial Plan: 1. General Fund to receive and disperse funds for cash flow, basic maintenance items, regular repairs, painting, cleaning, etc. and will be included in the annual budget. Alumni Corporation Treasurer will manage this fund with periodic updates to the Corporation Board.

2. Replacement Fund will be used to replace all items

with a 1-10 year life span. The net effect is a need for nearly $27,400 per year to replace existing furniture and equipment with a 1-10 year life span. The Treasurer will transfer $500 per month from the General Fund into this fund. While not sufficient to reach the goal, it is a start. Any investment income earned by this fund shall accrue to this fund and be annually credited. The fund is accessible to the Alumni Corporation Treasurer as needed with Alumni Corporation President’s approval.

3. Capital Reserve Fund will establish long-term funds for use

in major building renovation and replacement of items with a 10-year or longer life. A renovation in 25-30 years at a 3% inflation rate will cost about $2.3 million. This plan will suggest a goal of about $600,000 to $700,000 in Capital Reserve Fund for house renovation purposes. These funds will be used with majority approval of the full Alumni Corporation Board of Directors. The Corporation Treasurer will transfer $1,500 per month from the General Fund to this fund. This fund will be invested with preservation of capital and moderate investment risk with the goal of generating returns equal to inflation plus 2% annually. Additional capital fund drives will be required for future chapter house renovations. - Bernie Staller, Finance & Facility Chairman Iota Corporation Board

Iota Alumni Give Generously in 2011-12

AGR Iota Holds 2012 Officer Transition Meeting

Thank You to the following alumni who have contributed to the Iota Educational Foundation since July 1 through January 15, 2012. These 95 brothers contributed an average donation of $315 and have already helped us to exceed last year’s TOTAL contributions and we still have five months to go. We hope all Iota brothers can make a contribution this year so that not only can we break a record for total dollars donated in a year, but perhaps set a new record for participation as well! Your gifts help us increase our scholarship funding, helped purchase a new computer, and assist in sending undergraduate members to leadership training, national convention, and support officer personality profile assessments. Iota chapter officer’s transition meeting was held on Saturday, January 21, 2012. The event was a great way to discuss visions on where the chapter needs improvement in addition to areas that Iota is excelling at, as compared to other fraternity chapters on UW-Madison’s campus and other AGR chapters around the country. The introduction of a points-based recognition and achievement program was created and will be presented to chapter brothers in the following weeks to be implemented this spring. Brother Bob Hagenow helped the newly elected officers to identify which personality profile each officer is and how to work together to bring success to the chapter this year. The conclusion of the event gave a clear vision to the following year: to make better men is to hold each other accountable; to challenge each brother to hold themselves to a higher standard than last year through encouragement, recognition when excelling and scholastic achievement. Brother Bill Hantke and wife Leslie hosted the meeting again this year. - Marcus Hasheider, VNR Alumni Relations

Iota Brother Brey to Study Abroad Spring 2012

The same way Brothers Adam George and Robert O’leary studied abroad during the 2010/2011 academic year, I have taken the jump across the pond for this spring semester. From January until May I am enrolled at Wageningen University and Research Center in The Netherlands. It is located in a town much smaller than Madison in the heart of southern Holland. Wageningen is a true Agricultural University, having a variety of Bachelor and Master Studies in the Life Sciences. I myself am enrolled in courses related to Animal Nutrition. Wageningen has a large study-association known as “De Veteelers” which is similar to the student organizations like Badger Dairy Club and Saddle & Sirloin at UW. They host a variety of activities including excursions to farms and even have a dairy judging team, so it’s safe to say I fit right in with those students. Also, in the Iota house over the past three years, we have had two exchange students from Wageningen live with us, Br. Andries Olie in the fall of 2009, and Brother Michiel Dekkers this past fall. We will be sure to do our best to have as many ‘brotherhood events’ as possible over the coming months, taking in as much of Europe and its night life as possible! - Jacob Brey #1524

Summer 2012 Internships Wanted Several Iota Chapter undergraduate members are looking for 2012 summer work internship that could provide them with some insight into future career opportunities. If you or your employer offers summer employment positions, we would appreciate you informing the chapter. Jared Wendt, Noble Ruler e-mail: [email protected] phone: 608-630-7236
