NANJING, Aug 28 The men’s 10m platform diving finals were the fourth and last individual diving event at the Nanjing 2014 Youth Olympic Games. China monopolized the diving events winning all four gold medals and overshadowing the other countries with a significant points gap. WU Shengping (CHN), 18yearold sensation in diving, has won the gold medal in the women’s 10m platform and women’s 3m springboard, coming up on top in the finals and each of the preliminaries. YANG Hao (CHN), 16, has also won the gold medal in both the men’s 3m springboard and the men’s 10m platform events. Athletes and coaches of other teams iare convinced their toughest competitor is China, as both WU and YANG have shown by winning with a huge margin of points.

Their dives are always good; in practice and in competition,” Philippe GAGNE (CAN) said. He won the bronze medal in the men’s 3m springboard, trailing by a point’s difference of 47.05 from YANG. Speaking about the men’s 10m platform finals, XU Jie (CHN), coach of the Singaporean team, said, “China is the strongest contender for gold. Their training hours are a lot longer than other countries. Then they start diving very early. Our athletes have school; they have classes, tuitions, school trips where they have to go. In China, diving for the athlete is the first priority. In Singapore, it’s maybe the second or third.” China inducts children at a very young age and trains, tests and observes them in state run sports institutions spread across the country. The children that show potential are focused upon and brought to the Youth Olympic and Olympic level. “I started to dive when I was six years old. My coach selected me from school,” YANG said. “From when they are five they just dive, all day, all time, all life; Monday to Monday. They have school but it’s different. They live together in a training center. They live there, they train there, they eat there, and they sleep there. After four years they go off because there are many Chinese. They have 2000 divers and one of them is the best. In Brazil we have 30 divers,” 18yearold Ingrid DE OLIVEIRA (BRA) said. She finished in fifth position in the women’s 10m platform and eight in the women’s 3m springboard events. The Chinese domination of diving in Olympics has been established since the Seoul Olympic Games, in 1988. It has now become evident at the Youth Olympic Games level too. Different countries are inviting Chinese coaches to train their athletes. Some even send their diving delegations to the training schools in China. IOC Young Reporter Pallavi PRASAD, India
