Sharing the Gospel with Ashland and the World A couple of weeks ago, nine church members cut their afternoon rest time short and joined me for a prayer walk around Ashland just before the evening service. A stiff cold wind blew in as we gathered outside the front entrance to the sanctuary, but it didn’t stop us from praying with passion. We prayed that physical, emotional, and spiritual needs would be met in our community. We prayed for open doors and opportunities to share the good news about Jesus Christ. We prayed that God would use the sights, sounds, and even smells that we encountered on our walk to give us a greater heart for the neighborhoods nearest our church. Prayer walking is nothing new. Joshua and Caleb went on a prayer walk as they assessed the Promised Land with ten other spies. All twelve spies saw the same thing, but Joshua and Caleb saw things through the eyes of faith. They saw opportunities while others only saw obstacles (Numbers 13:1-33). Nehemiah took a midnight prayer walk around Jerusalem before revealing his plan to rebuild the city walls (Nehemiah 2:11-16). While I walked, I remembered our goal of reaching the unreached and unchurched wherever they live, work, or play. I visualized the Great Commission that starts in Ashland, and the surrounding areas, and extends to the ends of the earth. I thought about the fact that only 2 out of 10 residents in Boyd County attend church on any given Sunday. While I walked, 1 saw homes that had been taken care of and homes that had been condemned and I thought about the drug epidemic that is all around us. I saw homes with kid’s play toys and I saw homes with handicap ramps and I thought about the different kinds of needs that were on display. I saw businesses that contribute to the economy and wellbeing of our area and I thought about employees that give their time and energy to keep those businesses going. I saw faithful people pulling into the parking lots of the other churches on 29th Street as they gathered for their evening activities. I saw a community that is full of life – messy life – and I ached for those who are far from God. We can learn, love, and live out the gospel of Jesus Christ in our church and in our homes, but we must not be satisfied until we share the hope we have in the gospel with our community. I am thankful for the special events, the service projects, the gospel conversations, and the prayer that has happened under the banner of “Holding Out Hope” in 2017. I am grateful for the decisions to trust Christ, the baptisms, and the people who have joined Unity this year. But we cannot rest on our “evangelistic laurels” in 2018. We must prayerfully and passionately look for ways to hold out the hope of Jesus Christ in the year to come! Learning, Loving, Living AND Sharing, Pastor Jeremy
