The Gloucestershire Schools’ Christmas Science Lecture

The REAL Science of the Circus

Nano Invasion!

with James Soper

with Jamie Gallagher

Circus performers always make it look so easy, but have you ever thought about the science behind the tricks?

All around us, a hidden world is taking over - a strange alien world where nothing is as it seems: the nanoworld. Jamie will be your guide as we shrink down and get hands-on with the tiny tech that is changing our phones, food, sport and health. Get interactive as we uncover a place where robots build themselves, metal becomes transparent, and pencils become stronger than steel.

Through a thrilling combination of top quality circus skill and science expertise, this show brings the physics curriculum to life in a way that is guaranteed to enthral and inspire. Spectacular juggling and balancing tricks (with plenty of audience participation) show how forces work and combine when real circus performers show off their skills. James Soper is a teacher, an ex-professional circus performer and a Guinness World Recordholding juggler. He has performed across the world and has written, produced and performed on the live shows for BBC One’s Bang Goes The Theory.

Jamie Gallagher is an award-winning science communicator. He has featured on TV and radio, and travels around the world sharing his passion for science. Jamie is one of the Science Council’s 100 leading practising scientists in the UK, one of the Royal Society of Chemistry’s 175 Faces of Chemistry, winner of the International 3 Minute Thesis competition, and a previous FameLab finalist.
