Part 2: Discussion Guide “The Impossible” Big Idea Today’s “At the Movies” selection is the movie “The Impossible!” This movie is based on a true story about a husband and wife, Henry and Maria, and their three sons, Lucas, Thomas, and Simon. What should have been a dream vacation in a tropical resort in Thailand turned into an utter nightmare when the world’s most deadly natural disaster in recorded history struck. At some point in life we are all going to be struck by an unexpected storm. It hopefully won’t be an actual tsunami but it could be the loss of a job, an unexpected death of a loved one, a rebellious child, a health issue, a struggling relationship, or any other number of challenging and painful events. The truth is storms are inevitable. In fact, you’re either entering a storm, engaging a storm, or emerging from a storm. The question of the day is – what do you do? Where do you turn? Do you focus on yourself and forget about the needs of other people? Or do you find your purpose, grab for God and fight through the storm to reach others in their storm? One of the most important spiritual truths we will ever learn is that God wants to be our source in hard times and use us to help others when they are going through difficult, impossible times. “I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.” John 16:33 (NIV)

Discussion Questions  

Today you’re either entering a storm, engaging a storm, or emerging from a storm. The question of the day is – what is your response? What kind of storm are you in today? While you are in your storm, it becomes easy to become ‘self-focused” – but God wants us to continue to reach others who are in difficult times. Luke 15 is known as the “lost chapter” – read this chapter and write down some names of people who are lost in your life. Then take time this week to befriend them and invite them to church this next week. What makes is difficult for you to reach the lost around you?

Prayer Focus Lord, help us to be the light of the world to those who are hurting – especially in this season – with people going through so much. Give us boldness and compassion, and help us to point them to Jesus, the light of the world. Strengthen us in the midst of the storms and give us the power of the Holy Spirit to overcome. Thank you Lord for your grace in our hard times!

Next Steps Every day pray for the lost in your life and ask God to help you endure the storms that we encounter in life: John 16:33
