EMIRATES WOMAN introduces the new dubai workout: ladies, it’s time to hit the shops… Written by Jennifer Mason Illustrations Sara ?Japanwalla GettinG started any fitness fanatic will tell you that starting a new exercise regime can be tough, especially if you’re going it alone. studies have proved that you’re much more likely to stick to a workout plan if you can burn calories by doing something you love, so what better place for a dedicated fashionista to test that theory than in dubai’s two largest malls? introducing: the EW mall workout. all you need is a pair of comfortable shoes, deep pockets and a serious need to shop. the new CraZe walking and hiking are overtaking pilates and yoga as the new celebrity workouts of choice. stars like amanda seyfried, anne hathaway and josh duhamel are often spotted getting to grips with la’s rugged terrain in the quest for a leaner, stronger figure. one of the lesser-known benefits of walking rather than running is the amount of fat your body burns off. when you stick to lower-intensity cardio, your body runs off excess fat stores rather than carbohydrates. of course, walking burns fewer calories than running, so this does mean you need to do it for twice as long. spend more time at the mall? don’t mind if we do…

why the mall? in recent years, mall walking has become a popular activity with mall managements, as well as with the people taking part. most walking clubs visit the mall outside shopping hours, so you get to enjoy the deserted corridors, and the stores get the chance to tempt you into returning. air-conditioned malls are a great place to enjoy cardio at cooler temperatures – plus, you’ve saved all that extra money on a gym membership. now, what to spend it on…? the EW workout we’ve plotted routes in the dubai mall and mall of the emirates to help you make the most of your time. we recommend doubling up these routes on another floor of the mall for a serious workout (and to make sure you didn’t miss any important retail opportunities).

If you’d rather get your power walk in a group, every Sunday morning at 7.30am The Dubai Mall holds its weekly mall walk, where you can join other early risers for an energetic trip to the shops. Register at Fitness First Al Manzil Club or at any of the information kiosks at the mall.

Go Down Escalator

If you walk rather than glide down, you’ll burn an extra 3cal every time. Walk up the escalators and you’ll double that.

Walking at 4kph, the route alone would take you 27minutes to walk, burning around 97cal.
