Jackson Kaguri (Center) with two 2013 graduates.
Dear Nyaka family, It’s yet another year and you did it again! Thank you for your unwavering support. Together we are closer than ever to ending poverty for 43,000 children and 7,005 grandmothers in Southwest Uganda. That’s right, In 2013 you have changed the lives of 43,000 children and 7,005 grandmothers! Your children walk to school every day. Some children walk up to 9 miles! They do it every day because they are full of hope. You have shown them that they are valuable. You have fed them, given them medicine when they are sick, clothed them in new school uniforms, and put their first pair of shoes on their feet. Because of you, their world is full of new possibilities and wonder. You saw the potential in your Nyaka grandmothers. You know they are smart, capable, and ready to be leaders. They have banded together in 91 Granny Groups to learn from each other's wisdom, give and receive encouragement, and support each other as they work to bring their families out of poverty. Without your support, none of this would have been possible. You have put the tools to succeed in their hands. You have fed the hungry, sheltered the homeless, shown compassion to the lonely, and inspired hope for the desperate. You are my hero and You are their hero! 2014 will be even more exciting for your grandmothers and children. Your pioneer students will be entering their last year of high school and preparing to attend university in 2015. Construction on your Nyaka Secondary and Vocational School (classrooms and one residence hall) will be completed and students will be welcomed to attend in 2015! You have given your Nyaka grandmothers and students so much to be grateful for. Thank you for being a member of the Nyaka family. The Best is Yet to Come!

Grandmother Project Highlight Furida’s Story Furida's life has been deeply impacted by the HIV/AIDS epidemic. She watched helplessly, as the disease took 13 of her 15 children from her. While they were struggling with their illnesses, Furida did what any mother would do. She cared for her sick children. She spent nearly all of her money paying for their treatments. Furida had owned a successful produce business but she could no longer afford to keep it going. Without help, Furida would have been penniless and unemployed. Furida was able to get a micro-finance loan from her Granny Group to save her business. Over the past seven years, she has been the recipient of several loans, which have made her business healthy again.

Because of you, Furida is self-sufficient. She does everything she can to give back to her community. Furida's business did so well, she had enough money to buy land to build her own home. She is raising 3 children whose parents have passed away because of HIV/AIDS. She is able to pay for their education and care for them as she would her own children. Although Furida will always feel the pain of losing her children, she is finding healing through the love she shares with her adopted family.
You changed the lives of 7,005 grandmothers and their 43,000 grandchildren through your support!
You educated 612 children in primary and secondary school , which included providing school uniforms and shoes, 2 hot meals per day, school supplies, textbooks, and access to computers! You graduated 78 students in December. This included 33 primary 7 students from Nyaka Primary School, 27 Primary Seven students from Kutamba Primary School, and 18 Senior Four students. 86% of your Primary 7 students passed their PLE exams with a B or higher. You treated 3,734 of your students, grandmothers, and community members through the Mummy Drayton Clinic and Kutamba Primary School. Your Kutamba Blue Lupin Community Library was completed in June and had 1,935 visits! You distributed 3,847 farming hoes to your grandmothers that will help them fight famine and increase on their household incomes. Your grandmothers received 257 solar lights for use at home. You gave 1,278 of your grandmothers life saving mosquito nets. You distributed 46,820,000UGX ($20,357 USD) to 52 granny groups to be used for micro-finance loans. You built 37 homes (includes a house, kitchen and latrine), 6 houses, 20 kitchens, and 10 pit latrines. You began construction on the Nyaka Secondary and Vocational School that will be open to students for the beginning of the school year in February of 2015!
Student Highlight Rosette’s Story Rosette is in Senior 3 at Iganga Secondary School. After she lost her parents to HIV/AIDS, Rosette’s life could have been like many girls in Uganda. She would not have had the opportunity to go to school. She would probably have been married too young and started having children before she was ready. Because of you, Rosette is in school and studying hard so one day she can be an engineer. She is working hard to show her community and herself that girls are capable, smart, and ready to be leaders in Uganda. Because of you and sponsorship from Oysters and Pearls, Rosette had an opportunity to attend Robotics and Electronics Camp in Gulu where she learned about engineering and got to build her own robot! You have opened doors for Rosette and other girls like her through your support. Rosette (right) at robotics camp
Your generous support this year has ensured that The Nyaka AIDS Orphans Project has continued to grow and change more lives! In 2013, you supported 7,005 grandmothers and 43,000 HIV/AIDS orphans through your donations! You are empowering your grandmothers and students to make positive changes in their community. Thank you!
