Students entering Year 11 in September this year will be the first year group to sit the revised exam syllabus, and in time all year groups will enter a new phase of maths learning as we develop our work in line with new government guidelines. We are all very much looking forward to a new year which will be challenging but satisfying providing that students and families continue to work closely with us and support our work with the

7 Mile Sponsored Walk A number of Year 11 students have expressed how much their perception of maths has changed since joining The Orchard Centre from mainstream schools and how much they have enjoyed learning maths with us.

Mrs Edwards initiated a weekly mathematics competition called ‘Maths Owl’ where a maths problem is set for students and staff to work out.

If correct, students can earn themselves 50 bonus points towards their reward trips and benefit from some interesting and fun maths activities to become engaged in.

Key stage 3 history students studied The Norman Invasion and looked at how the events of the battles were recorded in the Bayeux tapestry. In response pupils researched the history of The Orchard centre and designed a tapestry square. They then manufactured each panel and hand sewed the text and images to produce

The Orchard Centres own tapestry.

Many thanks to everyone who sent in Sainsbury vouchers as we were able to order 5 footballs of various sizes, tennis balls, volleyballs, rounders posts and baseball sets.

Religion As may be expected, we are coming to the end of a very busy term in the school year. Year 10 and 11 students have, in several instances, received results from the Functional Skills examinations that they have completed this academic year. Many have achieved at or above their target level and we would like to take this opportunity to congratulate them on that. On 11 May, Year 11 students worked in the English Department for the whole day to complete revision exercises that would support them in their examinations. In addition to this they had the opportunity to work with Dreadlock Alien, a former Birmingham Poet Laureate. Students took part in a series of activities that led to them writing their own poems using key words from across the

curriculum. Whilst students were able to learn about creative writing processes and be supported with their revision, the nature of the sessions made it a very lively and entertaining way of learning.

Key Stage 3 RE pupils have studied the module ‘Religion & Nature’. As part of the module they have designed Totem poles and have begun growing their sunflowers. Pupils will nurture their plants and see who has grown the tallest plant by the end of term. They will then take their plant home with them in July.

The year 11 s had a great night at Orchard Centre’s first Prom. Everyone had gone to a lot of effort and looked amazing. Mr Timmins was our resident DJ for the night and many staff attended to join in the celebrations and wish them well.

We would like to thank the staff at the 422 Club, Willenhall, for allowing us to use the room and providing us with a delicious buffet. Thanks also to all staff who helped with decorating the room and to Mrs Carter and Mrs Griffiths for providing the Candy Bar. The year 11’s have been a fantastic year and have supported each other and worked as a team .

We wish them all the best for a successful future.

This was followed by visiting the Great Hall. This recently featured a live ‘Question Time’ featuring the Prime Minister. Finally the day ended with a tour of the Barbers’ Institute exploring the fine collection of art dating back to the 16th century worth an estimated 30 million pound.

Science Outreach! Birmingham University Sunshine Lectures. The Orchard Centre was fortunate enough to be invited to the above lectures at the University. Both KS3 and some KS4 students thoroughly enjoyed themselves as we attended the Technology session of ‘How Sat Navs work?’ We were able to tour the Student Hub, which gave an insight into how many Clubs and Societies the University had encompassing the nationalities of the students that attend the University .

Attendance On The Up Our students really value their learning and make every effort to come to school even if they are feeling a bit under the weather. Attendance has been on target this term so far and it is hoped that it will increase even further for the rest of the year. Overall attendance for the year is likely to be around 79% which is about the same as last year, however we are looking for an increase and we need parents help with this. We have a few pupils who have outstanding attendance last term……. Headline news… Hussain Ali, Bony Chumber, Ben Cottam, Paige Fisher, Kaylam Hunt, Jasleen Sidhu, Joseph Thomas and Callum Wilson have achieved 100% attendance for the whole of last 1/2 term so far in centre. Aiden Lawrence, April Turner, Jessica Adams, Themis Bokini Sarah Cornforth, Tommy Egan, Robert Hall, Luna Joesbury Shanay Lewis, Sydney Osazuwa, Harnek Sidhu, Thomas Adams Rueban Spalding, are also top attenders having achieved above 95% attendance for this term.

For the first half of the Summer term the homework reward visit was to McDonalds

At the end of the Summer Term many other rewards are on offer.

Again, well done and keep working hard! Mr Timmins

Each term students who achieve above 95% attendance at school receive a reward, and the form with the best attendance each week also gets a certificate and the attendance trophy. There is a special award at the end of each term and all pupils above 95% attendance will go into a draw for a chance to win a larger prize. Last term a tablet was awarded to Luna Joesbury. At the end of this term there will be cinema tickets on offer for one student and 4 of their friends . There will also be an end of year prize draw where the prize will be an electric scooter, Bluetooth headphones and a fitness watch for the lucky winners. We really appreciate parents’ contributions, so if your child has a sniffle or headache, we are able to medicate them in school if necessary. If you are sure that your child is unfit to attend school, or you have a medical appointment to attend, you must contact the Attendance Officer and let her know. You can leave a message on the Attendance Hotline at any time. The telephone number is 01902 558859 to speak to the Attendance Officer directly. If you receive a text message about your child’s absence please reply to this as soon as possible in order to inform school of the reason for absence.
