The Power of the Silence E x tra c ts fro m M r. F illm o re’s S u n d a y m orning ta lk in U n ity A u d ito rium , F ebruary 19, 1911. “ Be still, and know th a t I am G od.” “W h en tro u b le is brew ing, keep s till.” “W h en sla n d er is g ettin g off his legs, keep s till.” “ W hen your feelings are h u rt, keep still u n til you recover from your excitem ent. T h in g s look poised and steady thro u g h an u n ag itated eye.” “ W hen about to explode w ith righteous in d ig n atio n , w ait q uietly until you can sp eak calm ly, then m aybe you w ill not need to speak a t a ll.” Silence is th e m ost m assive th in g con ceivable. Its stre n g th is g ran d e u r, pow er, m astery . “ W hen thou p ra y e st, en ter into th jr closet, and w hen thou h ast shut th y door, p ra y to th y F a th e r w hich is in se c re t; and th y F a th e r w hich seetli in secret shall re w ard th ee o p en ly .” A g re a t m any religionists are satisfied w ith th e outer form of p ra y e r. T hey know n o th in g of th a t in n e r closet w hich Je su s com m anded us to en ter, th e re fo re th e ir p ra y e rs a re to an e x tern al G od, and n ot to th e “ F a th e r who h ea reth in se cret.” P ra y e r , to be answ ered, m ust be in accord w ith ce rtain definite law s of m ind. good. T o p ra y a rig h t we m ust know th a t th e re is one g re a t U n iv ersal M ind filled w ith sp iritu a l ideas w hich we m ay lay hold of th ro u g h th e in n e r faculties of the m ind, called S p irit. D o not be deceived by th e th ought th a t ideas a re in tan g ib le. Id eas a re th e real of every th in g . T h e y a re alive, and th eir v ita l force an d en erg y m ake the w orld go round. Id ea s a re b ro u g h t into expres sion th ro u g h th o u g h t, an d th e more o rd erly th e th o u g h t th e m ore p e rfe c t th e expres sion. I t is possible to g et back into the silen t realm , w here all ideas are in o rd er; and to know how to do th is is the secret of sp iritu a l pow er. M en ru sh to ex ter n ality an d lose center. T h e ir thoughtsubstance becomes th rea d b are, and, like th e p ro d ig al, th e y live on husks. T h ey know no th in g o f th e g re a t realm of sp ir itual ideas w ith in them . Je su s pointed tlie w ay to it w hen he said , “E n te r into th y closet an d p ra y to th y F a th e r.” In this sp iritu a l realm new thoughts come. T h e D iv in e M ind is new every moment, an d men can renew th e ir lives by entering into th e “ secret p la c e ” in silent commun ion. T o e n te r th e silence is p ra y e r. T he closet is your in n e r consciousness. T he doors w hich open to the ou ter w orld m ust be closed w hen y o u en ter th e soul center. T hese doors are th e five senses, w hich con nect you w ith th e w orld of effects. W hen you w ish to en ter th e realm of Cause the first step is to close th e th o u g h t to the outer and cen ter y o u rse lf w ithin.
