Who is Satan? The name is a Hebrew word meaning adversary. He is also called the Devil, which means slanderer, and Lucifer, which means Morning Star.
1. Where does the Bible say Satan comes from? Why did he rebel?
He was an angel who rebelled against God (Rev. 12:3-4) Why? (see Isaiah 14:12-14). Satan continues to rebel against God partially by fostering the spirit of rebellion in all humankind in the hopes of “devouring” us. (1 Peter 5:8-9).
2.
How does he continue to rebel today?
3.
How can we practically prepare students for college where Satan has had the most success in peeling people away from the faith?
He has been especially successful in peeling off college age kids raised in Christian homes. Some estimate that as many as 75% of all college age Christians leave the church. They then seek arguments to justify their actions such as embracing the theory of evolution. Dr. Tim Keel argues one of the reasons Christian kids rebel is that a rebellious existence looks better to them than the Christian life. This means we need to better prepare them, challenge them and have more fun!
“Satan’s greatest success is in making people think they have plenty of time before they die to consider their eternal welfare.” –John Owen
